Sat Apr 7 201800:28Still going! Orioles-Yankees heads to 14th inning
NEW YORK (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees are heading to the 14th inning tied at 3.The first 13 innings Friday night took 4 hours, 53 minutes, and included some wild misadventures on the bases. Most of the field level sections at Yankee Stadium were still about half full after midnight, though the upper levels have mostly cleared out.Yankees star catcher Gary Sanchez left in the 14th with an apparent leg injury while behind the plate.New York nearly won it in the 11th. With Didi Gregorius at third, Orioles right-hander Mychal Givens threw a breaking pitch to the backstop, enticing Gregorius to break for home. Catcher Caleb Joseph chased after the wild pitch, fielded the ball on a big hop and flipped it to Givens. The pitcher slid across home plate as he took the feed to block Gregorius and apply the tag.A video review upheld the call — just one play after a Yankees video challenge overturned what was initially ruled an inning-ending double play hit by Ronald Torreyes. It was nearly another big moment in a big week for Gregorius. He had a tying solo homer in the eighth inning off Miguel Castro that made Friday's freaky extra innings possible.Yankees right fielder Aaron Judge robbed Joseph of a home run in the 13th.

The Baltimore Orioles figured Alex Cobb would be a fine fit.Cobb stayed in the division he knew best, finalizing a $57 million, four-year contract on Wednesday."They used the AL East and the success I've had in it to their advantage," the 30-year-old right-hander said. Tue Mar 20 201802:35Matchups get managed, even in meaningless spring games
SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) — Buck Showalter heard that Lance Lynn was pitching against the Orioles and knew he'd be changing his lineup. The Baltimore manager wasn't concerned about the result of last week's Grapefruit League game against Minnesota, played hours after Lynn officially joined the team. But Showalter figured the right-hander might start when the Twins travel to Camden Yards for a three-game season-opening series later this month. With that in mind, Showalter saw an opportunity.Even in spring training, when wins and losses are meaningless, managers are always hunting for significant matchups. That's especially true along the Florida Gulf Coast, where all five AL East rivals train within about three hours of each other.Picking and choosing spots for players has been key for Baltimore this spring because the Orioles play 14 of their first 17 regular season games against either division foes or the Twins, another regular spring opponent. When Minnesota signed Lynn to a free-agent deal... [More]

SARASOTA, Fla. The contract is for $3 million if he makes the Orioles and contains up to $2 million in incentives. The 31-year-old outfielder, who had a lingering hip injury last season, discussed some of the reasons for his departure."I started working out at 8 or 9 years old to play in the big leagues, and I just kind of hit a point to where I was like, 'man, I need to take a little break and enjoy some time with my family'" Rasmus said Thursday. "My 8-year-old girl was in school, just had a boy who was 10 weeks old, so being able to spend time with them and keeping my wife feeling good through her pregnancy was important to me."Rasmus has a .242 lifetime average in nine seasons with St. Louis, Toronto, Houston and Tampa Bay. Thu Feb 22 201811:29Orioles look for better pitching after last year's struggles
SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles are looking for stronger pitching this year after last season's rocky performance. The starters last season combined for an ERA of 5.70.Three starting pitchers from last year's staff are gone: right-handers Jeremy Hellickson and Ubaldo Jimenez and left-hander Wade Miley. Remaining are right-handers Dylan Bundy, Kevin Gausman and Chris Tillman, who re-signed with the team Wednesday.Joining Bundy, Gausman and Tillman in the rotation is another right-hander, Andrew Cashner, who signed Feb. 15. Who gets the fifth spot will be the most pressing question in spring training."We were looking for a couple of veteran starting pitchers, and with the signing of Andrew Cashner and Chris Tillman, there's a couple of proven starters in the American League," said Dan Duquette, the Orioles executive vice president of baseball operations. The Orioles would like a left-hander to join the group, but they missed out on several free agents who have signed in the days... Wed Feb 14 201816:49Baltimore Orioles have much uncertainty in pitching rotation
SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles began spring training on Wednesday with 35 pitchers and much uncertainty. Since last season ended, Baltimore shed four of its starters from the 2017 rotation: right-handers Jeremy Hellickson, Ubaldo Jimenez and Chris Tillman and left-hander Wade Miley.Who'll replace them and slot in behind right-handers Dylan Bundy and Kevin Gausman in 2018 is a mystery.Manager Buck Showalter said that eight pitchers could work in Grapefruit League games as starters. They include Bundy, Gausman, right-handers Miguel Castro, Hunter Harvey, Mike Wright and Gabriel Ynoa. Two Rule 5 draftees left-hander Nestor Cortes and right-hander Jose Mesa are also under consideration.Harvey, who was Baltimore's top draft pick in 2013, but had Tommy John surgery in 2016, won't start the season in the major leagues, though he could pitch for the Orioles later in the season.Castro was impressive in long relief last year and got a start on the next-to-last day of the 2017 season.Wright,... Fri Feb 9 201814:33For starters, Orioles seek to fortify rotation this spring
BALTIMORE (AP) — There might come a time in the next few weeks when the Baltimore Orioles finally add a proven veteran to their stunningly thin starting rotation."There are some pitchers available, and I'm confident we'll be able to sign some between now and when we open (the regular season)," executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette said recently.Until then, manager Buck Showalter can only hope to find some quality arms among a massive array of hurlers ready to show their stuff at spring training in Sarasota, Florida."We've got 35 pitchers coming to camp, more than any in the history of the Orioles," Showalter noted. "We're staying focused on the people who are here right now, trying to see if certain people can go to another level. We've got plenty of resources to do more than compete."That's the company line, although it's hard to perceive the Orioles as a contender in the AL East coming off a last-place finish and with a rotation that currently lists only Dylan Bundy... Sat Jan 27 201813:44Machado to move from 3B to SS for Orioles, Showalter says
BALTIMORE (AP) — Even if Manny Machado doesn't switch teams this season, he almost certainly will be changing his position in the infield.Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Saturday that Machado will move from third base to shortstop this spring, and shortstop Tim Beckham will be shifted to third. The shuffle will become permanent unless something goes wrong — or Machado gets traded to another club."There could be some adjustments if we don't like the feel of it, but that's where we're going to head into it," Showalter said at FanFest, an annual offseason event designed to promote interest in the club.Machado and second baseman Jonathan Schoop did not attend.Machado becomes a free agent after this year and is sure to demand a huge contract. The Orioles have entertained trade offers for the 25-year-old, who's been an All-Star in three of his six seasons with Baltimore.Dan Duquette, vice president of baseball operations for the Orioles, has to decide whether to deal Machado sometime...
