Thu Mar 12 201511:53Cassel expects to be fully ready when offseason practices begin
Cassel, who sustained fractured bones in his foot last season that required surgery and landed him on injured reserve after winning the starting quarterback job for the Vikings, expects to be fully ready when offseason practices begin, BuffaloBills.com reports. Said the veteran, "The foot feels great right now. Everything has been going well with all my rehab up to this point and it was a severe foot injury at that point. I'm at about 22 weeks removed from the injury so I feel great. I'm doing exercises. I've been dropping back and throwing and everything else, and running so I feel good to go."
The Bills seem prepared to give Cassel a fair shot at competing with EJ Manuel for the starting gig, something he wouldn't have gotten behind Teddy Bridgewater in Minnesota. For what it's worth, whoever wins the starting job will likely be leading a team that'll be leaning on a heavy run game and a strong defense to win.
Tue Mar 10 201519:27Cassel (foot) has passed physical with Bills
Cassel (foot) has passed his physical with Bills, which will make his trade trade from Vikings official, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.
Cassel is thus on track to compete with EJ Manuel for the Bills' starting QB gig, though given the team's recent trade for LeSean McCoy, look for a continued emphasis on the run in Buffalo in 2015.
Wed Mar 4 201512:35Matt Cassel: Shuffles Off To Buffalo
Cassel (foot) has been traded to the Bills from the Vikings. The teams have also exchanged undisclosed draft choices as part of the deal.
Well, if there's one team that's making headlines ahead of free agency it's the Bills, who made a big splash Tuesday with a trade for LeSean McCoy. The Bills lost out on Josh McCown, so apparently they'll go with Cassel (and maybe one other still undetermined guy) to create some competition with an unproven EJ Manuel in camp this season. Cassel, who missed most of last season with a broken foot after winning the starting job for the Vikings, heads to his fourth NFL team.

Cassel is likely to return next season to the Vikings even though he's due $4.75 million in the final season of his two-year contract and coming back from a season-ending broken foot, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
There was some thought that the Vikings may cut or trade Cassel with Teddy Bridgewater becoming the clear No. 1 QB. It looks like Cassel will return as Bridgewater's backup in 2015 even with a large contract for a backup.
Wed Sep 24 201410:14Cassel (foot) placed on injured reserve
Cassel (foot) has been placed on injured reserve, ESPN reports.
Cassel suffered several bone fractures in his foot during Sunday's game against the Saints and will now be out for the remainder of this season. As a result, rookie first-rounder Teddy Bridgewater will command the Vikings' offense for the foreseeable future.
Sun Sep 21 201416:20Matt Cassel: Fractured Foot
Coach Mike Zimmer indicated after Sunday's game against the Saints that Cassel has several fractured bones in his foot, NFL Network's Albert Breer reports.
While there is no timetable attached to Cassel's recovery just yet, he'll obviously miss a good chunk of time, which sets the stage for Teddy Bridgewater to assume the Vikings' QB duties in the coming weeks.
Sun Sep 21 201414:23Cassel (toe) ruled out for return Sunday against Saints
Cassel (toe) has been ruled out for a return Sunday against the Saints, Charles Robinson of the Yahoo! Sports reports.
The Vikings will cast their lot with Teddy Bridgewater for the remainder of the contest. There hasn't been any word yet regarding the severity of Cassel's injury, which likely won't be known until after Sunday's game or during the upcoming week of practices.
Sun Sep 21 201413:51Matt Cassel: Removed Sunday with Toe Injury
Cassel left Sunday's game against the Saints in the second quarter with a right toe injury and is questionable to return, NFL.com reports.
Cassel will be sent in for X-rays as the Vikings look to ascertain the severity of injury, along with whether he's capable of returning to action Sunday. In the meantime, rookie Teddy Bridgewater will step in at quarterback for his first taste of NFL action.

Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer said after Sunday's loss to the Patriots that Cassel will start next week's game against the Saints, The Boston Globe's Shalise Manza Young reports.
Following a strong Week 1 performance, Cassel completed 19-of-36 passes for 202 yards, with one touchdown and four interceptions. The Minnesota offense was a complete disaster after an excellent opening drive, but Cassel will start at least one more game. If he turns in another performance like Sunday's, the calls for Teddy Bridgewater will undoubtedly be loud.

Cassel completed 17-of-25 passes for 170 yards and two touchdowns Sunday against the Rams.
Cassel connected with seven different receivers, throwing his touchdowns to wide receiver Greg Jennings and tight end Kyle Rudolph. Despite the solid play, it was Cordarrelle Patterson who was the spark, finishing with three carries for 102 yards and a touchdown. With Patterson and running back Adrian Peterson the focal points of the offense, Cassel is mostly responsible for managing the game and as long as he doesn't make too many mistakes (because he will make some), it should be enough to hold off rookie Teddy Bridgewater.
Mon Aug 25 201415:49Matt Cassel: Named Starting QB
Coach Mike Zimmer confirmed Monday that Cassel will start Week 1 over rookie Teddy Bridgewater, ESPN.com reports.
Word leaked shortly after Zimmer informed the team Monday morning that Cassel would hold onto his starting job. Zimmer made it official shortly thereafter. "At this stage and where we're at right now, that's the best thing to do," Zimmer said.
Mon Aug 25 201410:20Cassel named Vikings' starting quarterback for Week 1
Cassel has been named the Vikings' starting quarterback for Week 1, NFL.com reports.
Cassel has transitioned well into new offensive coordinator Norv Turner's system during the preseason, averaging 9.4 yards per attempt while completing nearly 67 percent of his passes. The veteran was expected to edge out Teddy Bridgewater as the rookie first-rounder adjusts to running an NFL offense and coach Mike Zimmer confirmed Cassel's starting status to his team Monday. Cassel represents a very serviceable stand-in quarterback to bide time until Bridgewater is ready to become the starter. However, with Minnesota's opening three games against the Rams, Patriots, and Saints, Cassel could face a trial by fire versus three strong defenses.
Sat Aug 23 201423:22Matt Cassel: Gets All Of First-Team Work
Cassel completed 9-of-17 passes for 152 yards, with one touchdown and one interception in Saturday's preseason game against the Chiefs.
Cassel played deep into the third quarter, leaving Teddy Bridgewater to work with the second-string offense. The usage implies that Cassel is the favorite to start Week 1, but he was already thought to be ahead in the competition, and the Vikings haven't made anything official. Cassel's highlight in Saturday's game was a well-placed deep ball to Cordarrelle Patterson that went for a 53-yard touchdown. On the other hand, Cassel threw a bad pick, was sacked three times, and fumbled once. Bridgewater completed four-of-seven passes for 40 yards and two touchdowns, as two of his drives started inside the Chiefs' 10-yard line.

Cassel will start Minnesota's third preseason game on Saturday at Kansas City, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. However, head coach Mike Zimmer said Teddy Bridgewater may see time with the first-team offense during the game.
Zimmer said he's not ready yet to name a starting quarterback. Cassel has been impressive in two preseason games and appears to have a lead on the starting job, but Bridgewater improved in his second game and him getting time with the first-string offense may mean the competition remains open.

Cassel was 12-of-16 for 153 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's preseason win over Arizona. He started the game and played the full first half.
Cassel was impressive in his half of work as he led the Vikings to a touchdown and field-goal drive against the first- and second-team defense of Arizona. However, Teddy Bridgewater was also impressive by going 16-of-20 with two touchdowns and leading a late game-winning drive (albeit against a third-string defense). Cassel should remain ahead in the competition for the starting job after this game, but he likely hasn't sealed the deal given Bridgewater's outing.
Thu Aug 14 201414:40Cassel may play entire first half in Saturday's preseason game
Cassel may play the entire first half in Saturday's preseason game, ESPN reports.
It appears Cassel has widened his lead on the starting quarterback job the past week with Teddy Bridgewater having a mediocre performance in the first preseason game and having struggled at time in practice (five interceptions last two practices). Cassel's extended playing time may also be a sign his lead on the starting job is growing, but it's still early in the preseason and a poor or strong showing by either quarterback could quickly change the depth chart.

Cassel will start Minnesota's second preseason game against Arizona, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Cassel outperformed rookie Teddy Bridgewater in the first preseason game, but both may again get time with the first-team offense. Cassel played three series in the first game and could see more time in the second game. It's still early in the quarterback race, but Cassel is still in the lead to start Week 1 at this point.

Cassel outplayed Teddy Bridgewater in Friday's preseason opener against the Raiders, completing five-of-six passes for 62 yards while leading the Vikings to a touchdown on his only drive.
Cassel is believed to have the early leg up, and he took another step toward the starting job Friday night. Bridgewater took a pair of sacks -- one with a fumble -- and completed 6-of-13 passes for 49 yards. However, it's still too early to rule out the rookie, as the second and third preseason games are typically far more important than the first and fourth. What's more, practice performance will also play a role in the Vikings' final decision.
Wed Aug 6 201415:44Matt Cassel: Tops Vikings' Depth Chart
Cassel is listed as the top QB on the Vikings' unofficial depth chart in advance of Friday's preseason opener against the Raiders, 1500espn.com reports.
Though Cassel will start Friday's preseason opener, the report notes that rookie Teddy Bridgewater (listed as the team's No. 2 QB) will also see work with the Vikings' starters in the contest. Meanwhile, as expected, Christian Ponder is listed as the team's third-stringer.
Thu Jul 24 201413:45Cassel officially atop Vikings' depth chart
Speaking Thursday, Vikings coach Mike Zimmer confirmed Matt Cassel is the team's No. 1 quarterback heading into camp.
That's been the expectation all along. No. 32 pick Teddy Bridgewater should give Cassel a run for his money, but the Vikes appear content to go into Week 1 with the veteran under center. However, we fully expect Bridgewater to make starts this season, likely early.
