Mon Jul 20 202000:32Pandemic MLB exhibition games have make-it-up-as-you-go feel
A seventh-inning stretch without fans at Yankee Stadium was far from the oddest happening on the second day of summer exhibitions in the majors. The first inning ended at Dodger Stadium without Los Angeles making a single out Sunday night, a game went to the 10th inning in Philadelphia even with the Orioles leading the Phillies 4-1, and the Yankees hit in the bottom of the ninth with a 6-0 lead over the Mets. It’s not quite baseball like you’re used to seeing. Then again, we'd never seen baseball amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The most peculiar situation occurred during the first exhibition between Arizona and the Dodgers, with the game having an intrasquad feel.Diamondbacks starter Taylor Widener got off to rough opening when he walked the first two batters and then gave up a single to Justin Turner that loaded the bases. Cody Bellinger followed with a grand slam to make it 4-0. Corey Seager then walked and was heading to first base when he learned the inning was over. Widener had thrown 25... [More]

Sun Mar 8 202015:00Yankees C Gary Sanchez says sore back improving
TAMPA, Fla (AP) — New York Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez said his sore back is improving, but he's still out of the lineup.Sanchez didn't take batting practice Saturday or Sunday. He isn't on the travel roster for Monday's road game against the Philadelphia Phillies in Clearwater."Take a couple days and see how it goes," Sanchez said through a translator. “Hopefully it progresses. As a baseball player you never want to be hurt, never want to have any kind of injury that holds you back. I just want to be healthy and try and do what I need to do to get back.”It is thought the soreness in the lower- and mid-back stems from Sanchez playing back-to-back games for the first time this year Thursday and Friday."I definitely feel better," Sanchez said. "Better than yesterday. It's feeling a little tight, a little uncomfortable. You don't want to rush it, especially spring training. You have time."Sanchez said he doesn't know if a new catching stance he is using this year had any impact regarding the back issue.__More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) — New York Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez was scratched from batting practice Saturday due to a sore back, though manager Aaron Boone said he doesn't think the problem is serious.Boone said he thought the soreness stemmed from Sanchez playing back-to-back games for the first time in spring training. Boone said he expected Sanchez would be shut down on Sunday, but didn't rule out a return to game action in a few days.“His back was a little sore this morning,” Boone said. “Nothing I’m too concerned about. I think that’s kind of normal wear and tear (after) first back-to-backs kind of thing. I don’t think it will be much of an issue."Sanchez joins a growing list of Yankees' regulars impacted by injuries. The team announced Friday that slugger Aaron Judge has a broken rib. It’s not clear whether he will need surgery, leaving doubt when he’ll be back in the lineup.Judge will rest two weeks while recovering from the stress fracture to his first right rib.
