"We're trying to be smart with him," added McCarthy, "but Jermichael is champing at the bit to get out there." The bottom line is that Finley continues to be unproductive. Through six games, he's averaging just 4.0 catches for 35.0 yards and has scored one touchdown.

Although Finley deserves some slack for playing hurt this evening, it's clear he's nowhere near over the dropping issues that marred his 2011. He's becoming a shakier TE1 by the week, but with six teams on bye in Week 7, he'll remain a must start.

It's still a risky spot for owners as Finley has struggled with drops and inconsistency all year while failing to top 60 yards in a single game. He also has no touchdowns. Finley's backup, D.J. Finley has been a drop-prone headcase again this season, recently complaining about his "chemistry" with Aaron Rodgers for the second straight year, only a few weeks after his agent publicly questioned Rodgers' leadership skills. This will likely be Finley's last season in Green Bay. He's due a $3.5 million roster bonus next March.

Even if the missed practice is just a precaution, Finley's week is not off to a good start. We ultimately expect Finley to take the field, but it's a situation to monitor closely the next two days. It's possible Finley will end up a dreaded game-time decision for Sunday Night Football.

The Packers want to see Finley start producing at the Jimmy Graham and Rob Gronkowski level before they shell out big money. Finley just signed a two-year, $14 million contract in February, but with a $4.45 million roster bonus due on the 15th day of the 2013 league year, the Packers could choose to cut ties early. Finley has all of the ability in the world, but he hasn't done it on a consistent basis. Green Bay has talented back-ups in Andrew Quarless and D.J. Williams. Finley has 15 catches for 133 yards and a touchdown through the season's first three weeks.

Finley was targeted six times on the night and put up his highest yardage mark of the young season. He drew a phantom pass interference call against Kam Chancellor to keep the team's lone touchdown drive alive in the fourth quarter. We're still waiting for Finley to show his TE1 numbers, but don't get down on him just yet. He still has tremendous upside in a pass-heavy offense. Look for a good Week 4 from the Packers' attack against the Saints.

Finley has flashed his puzzling inconsistency already this season with two bad drops and a fumble. He's averaging just 6.6 yards per catch through two games. "He's a talented guy, and we're confident in him," Clements said. Finley still oozes upside as a vertical pass-catcher in one of the league's best passing offenses.
