Derek Jeter (ankle) is not in the lineup for Wednesday's Grapefruit League game.

Tue Mar 19 201318:27Jeter (ankle) has only mild inflammation
Derek Jeter has been diagnosed with mild inflammation following an X-ray and MRI on his left ankle.
Jeter was scratched from Tuesday's lineup due to stiffness in his surgically-repaired left ankle, but it was deemed precautionary and the diagnosis confirms that's it shouldn't be a big deal. The veteran shortstop might spend extra time in the DH spot early on the season, but the ankle isn't a long-term concern at this point.

Yes, it's the same ankle Jeter had surgery on in October. The veteran shortstop took batting practice Tuesday, but had trouble loosening up. There's no reason to take any chances, so the Yankees are just playing things safe for now. Consider him day-to-day.

Tue Mar 19 201310:36Derek Jeter could DH on Opening Day
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Tuesday that Derek Jeter (ankle) could serve as the designated hitter on Opening Day.
Girardi hasn't ruled out the possibility that Jeter will start at shortstop, but it could depend on how his ankle feels. The decision could also be strategic, as the Yankees could use Jeter at DH and Eduardo Nunez at shortstop with Jon Lester expected to pitch for the Red Sox on Opening Day.

Sun Mar 10 201309:12Derek Jeter could play field soon
Derek Jeter will be in the designated hitter slot again Monday but could play shortstop in his next game appearance.
"If that's what he feels he's ready to do, then we'll do it," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "He has a 100-percent clearance from the doctor." Jeter wasn't able to run to first base at full speed during his Grapefruit League debut Saturday, but that should come soon. "Now it's normal spring training," he said. "I played a game. Sun Feb 17 201312:37Derek Jeter to be used more in DH spot
Yankees manager Joe Girardi plans to occasionally start Derek Jeter (ankle) in the designated hitter slot against left-handers this season.
It makes sense not only because it will allow Jeter some rest for his surgically-repaired ankle, but also because the team's primary DH, Travis Hafner, isn't nearly as good against lefties. Eduardo Nunez will play shortstop when Jeter is the DH.
