Browns WR Greg Little has dropped 30 percent of his catchable targets.

Little has six drops despite being targeted just 31 total times. It's a staggering percentage, and one that will have his role continuing to decline if he can't replace his oven mitts with hands in the very near future. It's doubtful Little comes into any fantasy value this season.

Even with fellow wideouts Mohamed Massaquoi, Jordan Norwood and Travis Benjamin sidelined by injury, Little saw just five targets. In six games this year, he's averaging just 2.3 catches for 28.1 yards and has one touchdown. Little just isn't good enough in real life or fantasy.

Browns coach Pat Shurmur indicated Monday that Greg Little may be benched for dropping the football.

"When he goes out in the game, got to catch ball," Shurmur said. "Can't play a guy that's going to drop footballs." Little finished second in the NFL in drops in 2011 and has two more through three games on 16 targets. It's time to consider dropping Little in fantasy leagues. He has 74 yards on the season.

If this was a major issue, Little would have been limited or held out altogether. He should be fine for Sunday's contest against the Bills.

In the second preseason game, Little dropped an easy pass over the middle but also showed Boldinian run-after-catch skills on a 24-yard gain, with two defenders draped all over him. Little is the heavy favorite to lead Cleveland in 2012 receiving. With improved quarterback play, Little should flirt with consistent WR3 value in 2012, especially in PPR formats.

Greg Little is getting some work in the slot early in Browns training camp.

Little was often in the slot in three-wide sets last year, so he does have experience. Vic Carucci of the Browns official website attributes the emphasis this year on an attempt to put Little and rookie Josh Gordon on the field "as much as possible." Gordon has shown smooth routes, good hands and an ability to separate from defenders thus far.

It's clear they're confident in Little's ability to lead the unit, but he'll need to improve on his 54-percent catch rate after finishing third among wide receivers in drops a season ago. Little attributed the healthy weight loss to "working out and good nutrition." The Cleveland Plain Dealer has repeatedly called Little a Pro Bowl candidate. While we're not ready to go that far, he's certainly an inviting fantasy football target as the No. 1 receiver in an offense that should make strides in 2012.

The body makeover may not cure Little's dropsies, but it could very well help him find the run-after-catch explosion that was missing as a rookie.

Little can be safely penciled in as the Browns' No. 1 wideout, but Massaquoi will have to fight off challenges from fourth-round pick Travis Benjamin and Jordan Norwood. It's certainly an advantage for Massaquoi to begin the offseason program atop the depth chart, but he'll be far from guaranteed of starting in Week 1. He hasn't been the same player since his October 2010 concussion, and turned in a thoroughly unimpressive 2011.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer's Mary Kay Cabot believes WR Greg Little is capable of "maybe even a Pro Bowl-type of year" if Brandon Weeden wins the starting quarterback job.

Cabot points out that Little tallied a respectable 61 receptions and 709 yards as a rookie despite missing the 2010 season as well as last year's offseason program. On the flip side, Little also led the NFL in drop percentage, had no signature play all season, and was just middle-of-the-road in yards after catch per reception.

Browns GM Tom Heckert acknowledged Thursday that Greg Little "had way too many drops" during his rookie season.

"The verdict is still out on him," added Heckert. Pro Football Focus charged Little with 14 drops, tied for second in the league despite seeing only the 17th-most targets. Little may warrant benefit of the doubt after not playing football in 2010 due to an NCAA suspension, but long term he doesn't project as a No. 1 receiver. While president Mike Holmgren called Little "a guy to build around," the Browns will likely pursue a true field stretcher this offseason.
