Tue Mar 10 202019:11Kopech hits triple digits in return to mound for White Sox
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Michael Kopech didn't have any trouble getting back up to speed after 18 months away from the mound."Yeah, I might have been a little geeked," the Chicago White Sox right-hander said Tuesday.Kopech threw 11 pitches against the Texas Rangers in Cactus League play — six of them reached 100 mph.It was the 23-year-old's first game action since undergoing Tommy John surgery in September 2018. "The first two pitches, I felt out of control," Kopech said. “By the third pitch, I took a breath and settled back in. But I still had quite a bit of adrenaline going.”“I felt really good, I was able to command my fastball after those first two and aside from that, just go out there and get an inning under my belt,” he said.Kopech, who made four starts in 2018 before being sidelined, was a key part of the five-player deal that sent pitcher Chris Sale to Boston after the 2016 season. Third baseman Yoan Moncada has already made his presence felt, and Kopech was also expected to be a... [More]
Sat Jan 25 202019:07Fortified White Sox say they're ready to contend again
CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago White Sox and their long-frustrated fans say they're primed and pumped for the team to contend in 2020.The White Sox haven’t made the playoffs since 2008 and have endured seven straight losing seasons, but there was an optimistic buzz at the team's sold-out fan convention Saturday after a splashy offseason.“It hard not to be excited and feel that energy they’re giving us,” fourth-year manager Rick Renteria told the crowd. “Obviously, it’s our job to put it from paper to the field and accomplish those things you want us to accomplish.”The AL Central title — and more — may be within reach as the White Sox emerge from a rebuild and an offseason filled with free agent signings.“Our guys are telling our young players, 'Hey it’s time to go,’” Renteria said. “We don’t have time to mess around. We have a window of opportunity. Let’s take it. That’s where we’re at.”Renteria has been cautious with his words and patient with young players the past three seasons. Chicago... [More]
Thu Jan 2 202019:59White Sox, Robert agree to $50 million, 6-year contract
CHICAGO (AP) — Luis Robert is locked in with the Chicago White Sox — for the next six years at least, and possibly for the opening day lineup, too.The White Sox and their prized young outfielder agreed Thursday to a $50 million, six-year contract, clearing the way for Robert start the season in the majors. The deal, which includes club options for 2026 and 2027, removes the incentive for the White Sox to keep the 22-year-old Cuban off their opening day roster to limit his service time and delay his eventual free agency.“People are understandably focused on what, potentially, this means for our opening day roster,” Hahn said. “I understand the focus on the 2020 season. But it’s really just much more about the long term and having Luis Robert patrolling center field for hopefully at least the next eight years in a White Sox uniform.”Robert said through an interpreter he is “100% convinced” he will start the season in the majors and is relieved he won’t have to worry about beginning the year...
