Thu Mar 22 201813:59What will Mariners be? Much depends on pitching staff
SEATTLE (AP) — Robinson Cano has spent enough time now to understand the angst surrounding the Seattle Mariners. The Mariners have the longest playoff drought in the four major sports, meaning there is an urgency to finally end the skid. They also appear to be an average ballclub at a time when the American League is filled with mostly superpowers and rebuilders. It's an odd spot for a club with talent but scant optimism that this is the year the playoff drought ends."We've been close a couple of times. ... That's life, that's part of the game. But I know we have a bunch of great guys here, guys who know how to play this game," Cano said. The Mariners enter the 2018 season with an offense that could score a lot of runs and a pitching staff that could give up just as many. Cano and Nelson Cruz are the anchors of a batting order that with the additions of Dee Gordon and Ryon Healy could be potent enough to keep Seattle in a lot of games. But there's mostly skepticism about the pitching staff.James... [More]

Wed Mar 7 201801:51Wheel see: Diamondbacks set to bring back bullpen buggy
The bullpen cart is back in the big leagues.Nearly a quarter-century since relievers stopped catching rides to the mound, the Arizona Diamondbacks said Tuesday they will use a buggy — topped by the requisite oversized team cap — to transport pitchers from both bullpens at Chase Field."I don't know how it will be getting driven in, but I think it's a cool idea and we'll have some fun with it," Diamondbacks closer candidate Archie Bradley said. With Major League Baseball looking for ways to speed up things, it's hard to tell whether this will save any time. But it's certain to be a hit with fans, especially the kids the game is trying to attract."I love it. I love it. I love," Cleveland manager Terry Francona said. "It brings a little personality. We're probably the only sport that can do something like that."The last known time a team in the majors used a motorized vehicle — some clubs had actual cars — to relay relievers was 1995, when the Milwaukee Brewers shuttled them in a motorcycle... Thu Mar 1 201819:18Around the bags: At 44, Colon throwing strikes for Rangers
Bartolo Colon could always throw strikes. Two months shy of turning 45, he still can.Colon filled up the strike zone Thursday in his spring training debut for Texas, a two-inning start against San Diego. The portly right-hander gave up two hits, including a home run by Wil Myers, struck out Chase Headley looking and walked none. He threw 23 of 32 pitches for strikes, and his fastball was mostly in the mid-80s mph range.Colon signed a minor league contract with Texas after going a combined 7-14 with a 6.48 ERA in 28 starts last season with Atlanta and Minnesota."I feel well and I'm throwing strikes," he said. "I'm happy with the way I feel. All I need to do is keep working hard and then it's up to them."Texas added Colon to see if he had anything left."He's got deception, a great feel for a pitch and commanding the fastball and puts it where he wants to," Rangers manager Jeff Banister said. "Day one, he walks out here for live BP and young, fresh hitters walk away scratching their heads.... [More]
