Fri Oct 23 201522:42NBA notebook: Cavaliers F Thompson inks $82 million deal
Tristan Thompson and the Cleveland Cavaliers ended an impasse with a signed five-year contract on Thursday. The deal is worth $82 million and is fully guaranteed. No player or team options are included in the contract, which appears to be a massive victory for Thompson.Thompson and the Cavaliers had not been able to end a standoff that started on the first day of free agency in July when it was reported that the sides were close to an agreement. The 24-year-old sought a max contract of five years at $94 million or three years at $53 million, but the Cavs previously would not offer more than $80 million.Cavs superstar LeBron James urged the team to re-sign Thompson throughout the summer and into the preseason, saying the situation was a distraction to the team. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers are proceeding cautiously with James after he received an anti-inflammatory injection in his back last week. The 30-year-old James has not participated in a full practice since the shot on Oct. 13 and Cleveland... [More]

Evans was held out of Monday's preseason game against the Bulls due to back spasms, John Reid of the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
The Pelicans described Gordon's absence as precautionary, so it's possible that the eight-year veteran could return to the court for the team's next exhibition contest Saturday in Lexington, Ky. against the Kings. Gordon, who is line to start at shooting guard this season, is averaging nine points on 29.4 percent shooting from the field over his two preseason appearances.

Evans nearly posted a double-double Friday, collecting 17 points (8-15 FG, 1-3 3Pt), two assists, and nine rebounds in 24 minutes of a 103-93 loss to the Hawks.
Evans has apparently been slotted primarily as a point guard in 2015-16 as per head coach Alvin Gentry, and certainly outshined presumed starter Jrue Holiday in his first action of the preseason. The 26-year-old shot extremely well and was also highly productive on the defensive glass, with eight of his nine boards coming on that end of the floor. The Pelicans starting point guard situation appears to be shaping up as one to monitor over the balance of the preseason, particularly if Evans continues to post quality outings similar to Friday's contest. Evans is expected to receive healthy minutes and round out the stat sheet on the majority of nights regardless of his regular-season role, making him a worthwhile mid-round selection in drafts.
