Wed Oct 30 201916:48Suzuki back in Nats lineup for World Series Game 7 vs Astros
HOUSTON (AP) — Nationals catcher Kurt Suzuki is back in Washington's lineup for the deciding Game 7 of the World Series against the Houston Astros.Suzuki hadn't played the last three games while dealing with a hip flexor strain. The 36-year-old, who homered in Game 2, will be behind the plate to catch for Max Scherzer.Scherzer, the three-time Cy Young winner, was unable to make his start in Game 5 because of an irritated nerve near his neck. He is starting the finale after a cortisone shot.Washington's lineup was unchanged aside from Suzuki back in the lineup batting eighth, and center fielder Victor Robles dropping back to the No. 9 spot after catcher Yan Gomes hit in that spot in Game 6.Houston used a familiar lineup against the right-hander, led off by 2017 World Series MVP George Springer.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter
Thu Oct 24 201902:05Astros issue 1st intentional walk, Nats bust loose in Game 2
HOUSTON (AP) — At this rate, AJ Hinch might never issue another intentional walk the rest of his life.Hard to blame the Houston manager for his decision Wednesday night, and the mess that followed in Game 2 of the World Series. But it did seem as though the baseball gods were getting the last laugh.Because right after Hinch ordered an intentional pass for the first time all year — the Astros were the only major league team to go through an entire season without one since they've been tracked — things went awry against Washington."Ironically, I thought it was our best chance to limit their scoring," Hinch said, "and instead it poured gasoline on a fire that was already burning."As soon as clutch-hitting slugger Juan Soto shucked his bat and trotted to first without seeing a pitch from Ryan Pressly, loading the bases with two outs and Washington ahead by a run in the seventh inning, Houston kept flubbing.All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman couldn't corral a grounder, then threw away another.... Thu Oct 24 201901:45Astros' Verlander 1st pitcher to go 0-5 in World Series
HOUSTON (AP) — All of Justin Verlander's illustrious accomplishments mean little right now.Not those 225 wins, not the 3,006 regular season strikeouts, not the record 202 postseason Ks. Not the eight All-Star selections, not the 2011 Cy Young Award and Most Valuable Player prize.Verlander dropped to 0-5 in World Series games Wednesday night as the Washington Nationals routed the Houston Astros 12-3 for a 2-0 Series lead. That skid on baseball's biggest stage is dragging the right-hander's reputation down like ballast sinking a ship to the bottom of the sea.Never before has a pitcher lost his first five World Series decisions."We don't dwell on win-loss record anymore, right?" he said with a smile, a reference to modern analytics by one of the sport's most knowledgeable players. "I'd like to win a couple. Hopefully, I'll have another opportunity."He wound up flat on his back in the fourth inning, slipping on Ryan Zimmerman's grounder and firing the ball off his own left leg . Verlander could... [More]
Thu Oct 24 201901:35Ailing Suzuki delivers big swing as Nats near title
HOUSTON (AP) — Kurt Suzuki is beat up physically, with a sore back and other ailments after grinding behind the plate from spring training through late October. All of that would be worthwhile for the 36-year-old Washington Nationals catcher to finally get a World Series ring."I've waited 13 seasons for this, for this moment to be able to play in the World Series," Suzuki said. "I kind of joked around with a lot of guys in the training room the other day, 'Man, I've got energy now' ... It kind of pumps you up, especially waiting how long I did."Suzuki believes pitching and defense ultimately win championships, and he certainly has done his part in the squat. In Game 2, he added his first RBI this postseason, a tiebreaking solo homer off Houston Astros ace Justin Verlander to spark a bat-around seventh inning."I can't remember the last time I barreled a ball up like that," Suzuki said with a smile, his two young sons sitting in his lap. "Felt like months ago. Probably was months ago."The... [More]

Wed Oct 23 201901:30Max-imum effort: Scherzer, Nats wiggle to win Series opener
HOUSTON (AP) — He could have been Mad Max on a night his best was missing. Instead, he fenced and fought, shuffled and juggled. And so did the Washington Nationals bullpen. As the Houston Astros kept clawing within one big hit of a comeback, Scherzer and the Nationals just held on.Scherzer got through five innings of Max-imum effort for a 5-4 victory in Tuesday night's opener, becoming the first pitcher to win a World Series game for a Washington team since Earl Whitehill against the New York Giants in 1933.Unable to overwhelm, Scherzer threw a bit of the ol' razzle dazzle that included 112 pitches, nine full counts and six stranded runners."They grinded me apart. Pitch count was out of control, and that's a credit to what they were able to do and constantly put pressure on me," said Scherzer, who threw just 42 pitches out of his windup.
