Henderson Alvarez tossed seven scoreless innings as the Marlins won Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader with the Mets by a score of 3-0.
Alvarez cruised through the easy afternoon outing, allowing only four hits and fanning five batters without issuing a walk. The 23-year-old righty's ERA is back under 4.00 and there's reason to think he can finish the season strong. He gets the Nationals on the road next.

Henderson Alvarez was lifted after giving up five runs in four innings Monday against the Braves.

Thu Aug 29 201300:28Alvarez exits after 1 2/3 innings due to rain
Henderson Alvarez lasted just 1 2/3 innings, allowing one run before rain ended his night on Wednesday.
The rain may have saved Alvarez' owners from a worse line, as he'd already allowed three hits and a run before the rain came. He didn't factor in the decision, so Alvarez remains 2-3 and owns a 3.90 ERA for the year. He'll take on the Cubs in Chicago on Monday.

Alvarez looked completely overmatched against the hottest team in baseball, yielding seven hits and two walks over his five frames. He got off to a hot start upon first joining the Fish but has struggled now in three straight games. The right-hander is not a good fantasy option next week in the nation's capital.

Henderson Alvarez hurled seven shutout innings in a no-decision against the Brewers on Sunday.
He struck out one, walked one and scattered five hits. Unfortunately, Alvarez's best start of the season was largely forgotten by the time both teams walked off the field in Milwaukee's 1-0, 13-inning triumph. Alvarez has posted an impressive 3.28 ERA and 1.38 WHIP through four starts. He's an asset in NL-only leagues and should be on mixed leaguer's radars, as well.

Alvarez got off to a very rough start, giving up hits to four of the first five batters he faced, and he was down 3-0 before he even had two outs in the game. From that point on, he allowed just two more hits, walked none and struck out two. He should have some value in NL-only leagues going forward.

Henderson Alvarez's (shoulder) next start will come with the Marlins.
Alvarez tossed 7 2/3 scoreless innings for Double-A Jacksonville on Friday and finishes his rehab schedule with a 1.11 ERA over four outings. "He's going to be on his way," manager Mike Redmond said. "He'll throw a bullpen here [Sunday], and we'll figure out what we're going to do as far as where we're going to fit him in." Alvarez is on the same schedule as Ricky Nolasco, so he could take his spot in the rotation on Wednesday if Nolasco is traded before then. If Nolasco is still around, Tom Koehler would figure to get the boot.
