Miami Marlins starting pitcher Henderson Alvarez was diagnosed with a tear in his right shoulder Tuesday, and he will undergo season-ending arthroscopic surgery, according to MLB.com. Alvarez suffered a setback as he was rehabbing from a previous injury and a new evaluation revealed the tear. Alvarez won 12 games and posted a 2.65 ERA last season en route to an All-Star selection, but he has been limited to just four starts this season because of shoulder problems. "I think he's a definite out-for-the-season candidate now," manager Dan Jennings said. "To be determined. I think depending upon the actual severity of the tear and just the timetable, we'll know more after the procedure's complete. Up until game time we've had our last three All-Stars (Alvarez, Giancarlo Stanton and Dee Gordon) (need) to be shut down. It's a little frustrating when you've got quality, you don't want to see anyone injured, but certainly you don't want to see your guys get shut down for an extended period of time."

Alvarez (shoulder) will be evaluated by Dr. James Andrews this week, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
Alvarez had started a rehab assignment in earnest at High-A Jupiter, logging three starts before suffering a recent setback in his right shoulder. The upcoming visit with the famed doctor could derail what has been a disastrous season marred by ineffectiveness and injury. In eight starts prior to landing on the DL on May 22, he posted a 0-4 record, 6.45 ERA, 1.567 WHIP, and 9:7 K:BB in 33.1 innings.

Alvarez (shoulder) has suffered a setback and will be evaluated to see whether or not he needs surgery, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
It remains to be seen how severe Alvarez's setback was, but this is obviously another discouraging development in a disappointing and injury plagued season for the right-hander. He has already pitched multiple seasons with a partially torn UCL and his recent bout of shoulder inflammation could push his potential expected return well into August.
Thu Jul 16 201517:29Henderson Alvarez: (Shoulder) Allows Two Earned Runs in Rehab Start
Alvarez (shoulder) allowed two earned runs over 2.1 innings of work during his first rehab outing with High-A Jupiter.
Alvarez struck out three without walking a batter as he got in his first game action since beginning his second stint on the disabled list this season. The Marlins right-hander has been limited to just four starts of the first half of the season, posting and 0-4 record, 6.54 ERA and 1.57 WHIP. He'll take a few more turns in the minors to rebuild his stamina before returning to the Marlins rotation.

Alvarez (shoulder) departed on a rehab assignment with High-A Jupiter on Wednesday, Joe Capozzi of The Palm Beach Post reports.
Alvarez will head out on a rehab assignment a bit ahead of the expected schedule. The long rehab process from a partially-torn UCL is finally in the late stages, but he'll likely require a fair number of rehab assignments to rebuild his arm strength and stamina before finally rejoining the rotation.
Wed Jul 15 201515:11Henderson Alvarez: (Shoulder) Begins Rehab Assignment
Miami Marlins pitcher Henderson Alvarez will begin a rehab assignment this week for a shoulder injury that has kept him out most of the season, according to the Palm Beach Post.
Miami Marlins pitcher Henderson Alvarez will begin a rehab assignment this week for a shoulder injury that has kept him out most of the season, according to the Palm Beach Post. Alvarez has made only four starts, his last coming May 22, with two stints on the disabled list. Alvarez was placed on the disabled list April 13 with shoulder inflammation, but his return lasted only two starts as he gave up six runs in both outings and was sent back to the disabled list. Alvarez also has a partially torn UCL in his elbow that he has apparently pitched with for the last few seasons. "We start getting our pieces back and we pitch the way we're pitching, then we've got a chance to play the best baseball we've played all year," interim manager Dan Jennings said. "We haven't been able to do that to this point."

Alvarez (shoulder) threw a successful 30-pitch bullpen session Tuesday and could begin a rehab assignment shortly after the All-Star break, the Miami Herald reports.
Alvarez has been limited to just four starts on the season after breaking out with a 2.65 ERA and 1.24 WHIP over 187 innings pitched in 2014. He's currently working his way back from a second stint on the disabled list due to the shoulder injury, so the team will continue to take things slowly as he rebuilds arm strength. If he is indeed able to head out for a rehab assignment right after the break, Alvarez would have a chance to rejoin the Marlins rotation by the end of July.
Thu Jun 25 201513:00Alvarez (shoulder) expected to throw bullpen session Saturday
Alvarez (shoulder) is expected to throw a bullpen session Saturday, the Miami Herald reports.
The right-hander is working his way back from a second stint on the DL this season due to his balky throwing shoulder and finally appears to be making some progress. He's currently throwing on flat ground at a distance of 120 feet and will get back onto a mound this weekend. The Marlins have had a number of injured starters get back to the field recently and can afford to take things slowly with Alvarez given their new-found rotation depth.

Alvarez (shoulder) is no longer suffering from inflammation in his right shoulder has begun throwing on flat ground, the Miami Herald reports.
While this is certainly an improvement from the "no-throw" status that Alvarez had been under, the right-hander remains without a clear timetable to return. He is currently throwing from a distance of 60-feet, but it will be difficult to project a return date until he begins throwing off of a mound. Alvarez has made just four starts this season, holding a 6.45 ERA and 1.57 WHIP over 22.1 innings pitched.
Sun May 31 201515:43Alvarez (shoulder) remains on no-throw schedule
Alvarez (shoulder) remains on a no-throw schedule, MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports.
Alvarez, who was placed on the DL on May 22, has been shut down for the Marlins for the time being in an effort to help the inflammation in his shoulder calm down. Once the Marlins feel he's built up enough strength in the shoulder, Alvarez will gradually start throwing again. The Marlins haven't provided an estimated return date for the right-hander.
Fri May 22 201523:58Henderson Alvarez: (Shoulder Inflammation) To DL
Alvarez was placed on the 15-day DL Friday with right shoulder inflammation, MLB.com's Clark Spencer reports.
He gave up six runs (four earned) on six hits and four walks with two strikeouts over five innings Friday and apparently reaggravated the shoulder issue that had him on the DL just days prior to Friday's start. We should know more about the severity of the injury in the coming days. Justin Nicolino would seem to be an obvious candidate to be called up from Triple-A to take his rotation spot.
Fri May 22 201514:42Alvarez pitching several seasons with partial UCL tear
Alvarez has been pitching several seasons with a partial UCL tear, MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports.
The severity of the tear is unclear but it's not severe enough to stop him from pitching. Miami was apparently aware of the UCL tear when they traded for him. Considering he has been pitching through the injury for a significant period of time he should not be downgraded significantly because of this news.

Alvarez struggled in his return from the disabled list Sunday, allowing six earned runs on nine hits and two walks over 5.2 innings pitched during a loss to the Braves.
It didn't really matter how Alvarez pitched as Shelby Miller dominated the Marlins' bats on the other side. On the positive side, right-hander was able to overcome a five-run second inning and pitch into the sixth while throwing 85 pitches. Alvarez has had a bumpy start to the season and now owns a 6.23 ERA and 1.44 WHIP over 17.1 innings pitched around his DL stint. He'll look to get back on track Friday against the Orioles.

Alvarez (shoulder) has been activated from the 15-day DL and will start Sunday's game against the Braves, MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports.
Alvarez had already been announced as Sunday's starter, and is set to square off against Shelby Miller and the Braves. After tossing six scoreless innings in a rehab start Tuesday, the 25-year-old right hander is finally set to see another Major League start after spending just over a month on the shelf. Alvarez will look to put a rocky start (six earned runs in 12 innings) behind him, and return to his 2014 form where he posted a career-best 2.65 ERA and pitched three shutouts.

Alvarez will return to the Marlins and start Sunday's game against the Braves, MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports.
Alvarez is fortunate enough to make his return against the weak-hitting Atlanta lineup, so he could be a decent value in daily leagues. Two starts in 2015 isn't enough to say whether Alvarez will be in his All-Star 2014 form, but he should at least be seen as a league-average starter going forward.
Wed May 13 201512:27Henderson Alvarez: Effective In Rehab Outing
Alvarez (shoulder) tossed six scoreless innings Tuesday during a rehab appearance at High-A Jupiter.
The right-hander allowed four hits with five strikeouts and no walks, while inducing eight ground-ball outs in the effort. Though the team has yet to officially announce his next move, Alvarez could be back in the big leagues as early as Sunday.
Fri May 8 201518:41Henderson Alvarez: (Shoulder) Set For Rehab Assignment
Alvarez (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with High-A Jupiter on Tuesday, MLB.com reports.
Upon completion of a 50-pitch extended spring training outing Thursday, Alvarez was given the green light to pitch in a minor league game. Marlins manager Mike Redmond said Alvarez, who has been on the DL with shoulder inflammation since Apr. 13, sat around 91-92 mph with his fastball in the extended spring start. The team will re-evaluate Alvarez after Tuesday's game.

Alvarez (shoulder/elbow) is expected to play catch at some point this week, MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reported Monday.
The team is reportedly optimistic about the injury at this point as an MRI revealed only inflammation. It's possible that Alvarez could return in about three weeks and get back into the rotation by mid-May if all goes well as he ramps up physical activity. The Marlins will rely on David Phelps in the meantime to hold down Alvarez' spot in the rotation.
