Wed Jun 23 202103:59LEADING OFF: Ohtani back on mound, Franco's smashing start
A look at what's happening around the majors today: WHO NEEDS A DH? Two-way star Shohei Ohtani is back on the mound, taking on Kevin Gausman and the Giants at Angel Stadium. Because the game is being played in an American League park, it has the potential to be the first where an NL team uses a designated hitter and the AL team does not. Ohtani has hit for himself in seven of his starts this season and went into Tuesday tied for the major league lead with 23 home runs. Ohtani (3-1, 2.70 ERA) will make his 11th start, his most in any season since 2016, when he started 20 times in Japan. Gausman (8-1) is tied for fourth in the majors in wins and is second with a 1.51 ERA. “Looking at Ohtani in person and how physical and athletic he is, and then seeing it, you know, play out in the numbers, it’s no easy task to get that dude out,” Giants manager Gabe Kapler said. “So we’ll have to be creative and figure out a way.” FAST STARTS Wander Franco homered and doubled in his major league debut for... Tue Jun 22 202121:59Springer finally healthy and joins Blue Jays' potent lineup
MIAMI (AP) — Outfielder George Springer was in the Toronto Blue Jays' lineup Tuesday night for only his fifth game this year, and this time he hopes to stay a while. The three-time All-Star began the season on the injured list because of a strained right quadriceps muscle. He played in four games after he returned in late April before going back on the IL. “Last time I felt good. This time I feel great,” he said after completing a rehab assignment and joining the Blue Jays for the start of their two-game series in Miami. “I'm excited to be in the position I'm in now. I feel like myself." Springer went 0 for 4, but the Blue Jays won 2-1. Manager Charlie Montoyo put Springer fifth in the batting order and called him “one of the best players in baseball.” He joins a team that was tied for the MLB lead in homers and ranked second in slugging and OPS through Monday. “That’s a good problem to have — to hit George fifth because the first four guys are doing so good,” Montoyo said. The 2017 World... [More]

Tue Jun 15 202104:27LEADING OFF: 3 aces ailing, D'backs and O's lost on road
A look at what's happening around the majors today: AILING ACES Three of baseball's best pitchers are hurting. Reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Shane Bieber won’t throw for at least two weeks because of a right shoulder strain, an injury that will further test Cleveland’s pitching depth. Washington right-hander Max Scherzer won't take his scheduled turn in the rotation Wednesday due to tightness in his groin. And starter Tyler Glasnow of the Tampa Bay Rays was expecting to get an MRI after leaving Monday’s game against the White Sox with right elbow inflammation. Bieber allowed a season-high 10 hits and threw 107 pitches over five innings Sunday in a loss to Seattle. The 26-year-old righty was put on the injured list for the first time in his career. “We’re still obviously reaching out for more information and sending the images to different doctors and things like that, trying to get the best information we can,” Indians manager Terry Francona said. Bieber (7-4, 3.28 ERA) leads the majors... [More]

Thu Jun 10 202100:16Grichuk homers, Blue Jays beat sloppy White Sox 6-2
CHICAGO (AP) — Randal Grichuk hit a long home run and the Toronto Blue Jays took advantage of a season-high four errors by Chicago as well as a bases-loaded walk to beat the AL Central-leading White Sox 6-2 on Wednesday night. Grichuk hit a 451-foot drive leading off the second inning. Toronto rookie Alek Manoah threw five solid innings in his third major league start and the Blue Jays won despite another strong start by Chicago’s Lance Lynn. The White Sox were sailing along with a 2-1 lead after Lynn struck out nine over seven innings. But a shaky bullpen and poor defense spoiled things for Chicago. Toronto scored three runs in the eighth and tacked on two more in the ninth. Aaron Bummer (0-4) walked Vladimir Guerrero Jr. with the bases loaded in the eighth to force in the tying run. Two more scored when shortstop Tim Anderson overthrew first trying to complete a double play on Teoscar Hernández’s grounder against Codi Heuer, giving the Blue Jays a 4-2 lead. Toronto tacked on two more... [More]
Wed Jun 9 202101:05Blue Jays place catcher Jansen on IL with hamstring injury
CHICAGO (AP) — The Toronto Blue Jays placed Danny Jansen on the 10-day injured list Tuesday and recalled fellow catcher Riley Adams from Triple-A Buffalo. Jansen strained his right hamstring running the bases during Sunday's 6-3 loss to Houston. “I don't want to speculate, but for sure he wasn't going to be able to probably catch in the next few days,” manager Charlie Montoyo said. “So of course we don't want to go with one catcher, so that's one of the reasons for the move.” Adams made his major league debut in Tuesday night's 6-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox, going 1 for 3 with a fifth-inning double that went off the wall in center. He also made a couple nice defensive plays. The 24-year-old Adams, a third-round pick in the 2017 amateur draft, hit .250 with six homers in 19 games this year at Buffalo. “Riley Adams did an outstanding job behind the plate,” Montoyo said. “And you saw it in the seventh inning when we were in trouble, he was blocking balls and stuff. It's not that easy for... [More]
