Sun Jul 25 201000:20Marlins recall Chris Volstad for Sunday start
Marlins recalled RHP Chris Volstad from Triple-A New Orleans.
Volstad will return to the Marlins' starting rotation on Sunday against the Braves. He's posted a 4.78 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP in 17 big league starts and probably shouldn't be trusted in most fantasy leagues.
Sat Jul 24 201016:28Chris Volstad to start for Braves on Sunday
Chris Volstad will be recalled to start against the Braves on Sunday.
Volstad will be limited to around five or six innings because he made a start at Triple-A on Wednesday. and isn't a great fantasy option anyway. He had a 4.78 ERA over his first 17 starts before getting demoted.

Fri Jul 23 201020:11Volstad likely to start Sunday
Marlins interim manager Edwin Rodriguez said there is a "75 percent" chance that Chris Volstad will be recalled from the minors to start against the Braves on Sunday.
The Marlins have a spot to fill in their rotation after Nate Robertson was designated for assignment earlier this week. He would only be expected to pitch five innings on Sunday, according to Rodriguez, because he threw 70 pitches on Wednesday night for Triple-A New Orleans. The 23-year-old right-hander was demoted earlier this month after posting a 4.78 ERA over his first 17 starts. He has a 3.18 ERA over three starts with the Zephyrs.

Wed Jul 7 201009:29Marlins send Chris Volstad to Triple-A
Marlins optioned RHP Chris Volstad to Triple-A New Orleans.
Volstad was given the boot after he dropped to 4-8 on the year by giving up five runs over three innings against the Dodgers on Tuesday night. The 23-year-old right-hander has a 4.78 ERA over 17 starts this season and has yet to match the promise he showed during the 2008 season. He'll continue to hone his craft in the minors.
Wed Jul 7 201001:31Volstad's road woes continue for Marlins
Chris Volstad fell to 4-8 after giving up five runs in three innings Tuesday against the Dodgers.
Matt Kemp and Casey Blake homered off Volstad, whose command was off tonight. He walked three and threw just 39 of his 70 pitches for strikes. As is typical, his poor outing came in a road start. He has a 6.38 ERA and a 23/23 K/BB ratio in 42 1/3 innings in away games this year. At home, he has a 3.56 ERA and a 44/14 K/BB ratio in 55 2/3 innings.
Sun Jun 13 201017:39Volstad earns fourth win with six one-run IP
Chris Volstad allowed just one run in six innings to beat the Rays today.
Volstad walked four and struck out just three, but he also gave up only four hits and recorded one double play. Volstad was 0-4 with two no-decisions in his last six outings, so those in NL-only leagues were looking for a reason to keep him around. He'll never be of much use in strikeout leagues, but Volstad is a solid spot-starter in 4x4 leagues. We wouldn't recommend using him when he has a rematch with the Rays next weekend.
Tue Jun 8 201022:25Volstad gets spanked by Phillies in loss
Chris Volstad allowed six runs -- five earned -- over four innings in a loss to the Phillies on Tuesday.
The Phillies offense was on and Volstad just wasn't up to the task, allowing eight hits, including two homers. He didn't help his own cause by walking three and striking out just two. Volstad does struggle with consistency, but has big upside. In other words, he's a matchup starter in mixed leagues. Against Tampa Bay this weekend, you're going to have to have a strong stomach to use him.
Fri May 28 201022:42Volstad takes sixth loss vs. Phils
Chris Volstad yielded three runs over 6 1/3 innings in a loss to the Phillies on Friday night.
Volstad gave up the go-ahead run on an RBI groundout by Chase Utley in the seventh. He struck out six and walked three in the loss. Interestingly, he has managed a "Quality Start" in four out of his last five outings, yet he has been handed four losses during that time. He brings a 4.31 ERA into a matchup against the Brewers next week.
Sat May 22 201016:54Volstad takes loss vs. White Sox
Chris Volstad allowed three runs over six innings in a loss to the White Sox on Saturday.
He scattered seven hits -- including a two-run home run to Alex Rios -- while walking three and striking out four. Volstad is winless in each of his last three starts, however he has allowed three earned runs or less in four out of his last five. He'll carry a 4.31 ERA and 1.26 WHIP into a start against the Phillies next week.
Fri May 7 201022:17Volstad picks up more momentum
Chris Volstad yielded just two earned runs over seven innings against the Nationals to pick up his third win of the season.
Volstad tossed a complete game four-hitter against the Nationals in his last start, so there's a good chance he simply has Washington's number right now. Still, the talented fireballer is still only 23 and has significant upside. He's on the radar in mixed leagues with the Cubs on deck.
Sat May 1 201021:50Volstad tosses nine frames of one-run ball
Chris Volstad rattled off nine innings of one-run ball against the Nationals on Saturday as the Marlins nabbed a 7-1 victory.
Finally showing his potential, Volstad fanned eight batters and allowed just one walk while leading the Fish back to .500. He allowed only four hits, improving his WHIP to 1.11 and his ERA to 4.45. The 23-year-old righty is 2-2 on the year and will take on the Nationals again next week.
Sun Apr 25 201020:13Marlins' Volstad hit hard by Rockies
Chris Volstad was roughed up for seven runs in just 4 1/3 innings against the Rockies on Sunday.
Volstad walked only two batters (one intentional) and gave up seven hits, but two of those hits were homers by Seth Smith. Volstad was much better in his first three outings of the season, but since his strikeout rate is still quite low a breakout doesn't seem like it's imminent. With the Nationals due up next those in NL-only leagues could take a chance on him only if desperate for innings.
Tue Apr 20 201022:57Volstad allows three, takes no-decision
Chris Volstad yielded three runs in six innings Tuesday in a no-decision loss to the Astros.
He was in line for the win, but Tim Wood blew his 4-3 lead in the eighth inning when he surrendered a two-run homer to pinch hitter Jason Michaels. Volstad stayed 1-1 while his ERA is now 3.79.
Wed Apr 14 201022:40Volstad solid enough to get win vs. Reds
Chris Volstad gave up five hits and three earned runs in 6 2/3 innings on Wednesday night, earning his first win of the season.
Volstad was on track for a spectacular line tonight, but he gave up a two-run jack to light-hitting Paul Janish in the seventh inning. Still, it's another encouraging start for the powerful Volstad. He's probably worth a flier in deeper mixed leagues with the Astros and Padres on tap.
Fri Apr 9 201022:39Volstad suffers loss in first outing of 2010
Chris Volstad yielded three runs -- two earned -- over 6 1/3 innings Friday in the Marlins' loss the Dodgers.
Volstad finished the spring on a strong note to earn a spot in the Marlins' season-opening rotation, but took a step back this evening. He recorded only two strikeouts and threw just 56 of his 88 pitches for strikes. The 23-year-old needs to be better next week against the Reds.
