Tue May 31 201100:04Volstad hit hard by Diamondbacks
Chris Volstad got rocked by the Diamondbacks on Monday, allowing five runs on eight hits and two homers in just 3 1/3 innings of a Marlins loss.
He allowed solo shots to both Gerardo Parra and Kelly Johnson in the third inning. The outing was Volstad's shortest of the season, while he has now allowed five runs in four of his 10 starts. The owner of a 5.91 ERA and 1.54 WHIP, he'll get the Brewers at home this weekend.

Mon May 2 201123:22Volstad lousy as usual, but Fish win
Chris Volstad had his usual middling outing on Monday evening against the Cardinals, allowing seven hits and five runs over five innings of work in Florida's 6-5 victory.
Volstad has now allowed four or more runs in four of his first five starts this season, and is the owner of a 6.00 ERA as a result. Since that's how he's pitched for the majority of his four-year career, it's far from guaranteed he'll hold onto his spot in the Marlins rotation through the end of the season.

Tue Apr 26 201122:39Volstad sterling in victory over Dodgers
Chris Volstad pitched seven innings of two-run ball and struck out five Tuesday against the Dodgers.
He walked only one, surrendering seven hits. He entered the game with a 6.60 ERA and 1.67 WHIP, so this outing was certainly positive. He improved to 2-1 with a 5.32 ERA. Volstad shouldn't be trusted outside of the deepest of NL-only leagues.

Thu Apr 21 201123:02Chris Volstad struggles but still wins
Chris Volstad picked up an ugly win Thursday, giving up five runs on four hits and three walks over 5 1/3 innings while punching out five in the 9-5 victory.
In Volstad's defense, it had been eight days since his last start, so it's not really a surprise that he was rusty. But, he hasn't been terribly successful in any of his three outings this season and now sports a 6.60 ERA and 1.67 WHIP on the year. The righty will go up against the Dodgers next.

Sat Apr 16 201114:30Chris Volstad pushed back to Thursday
Chris Volstad will have his next scheduled start pushed to Thursday as a result of Saturday's rainout.
Volstad was slated to get the ball Sunday, but Saturday's scheduled starter, Anibal Sanchez, was pushed back a day. The Marlins elected to keep Josh Johnson and Ricky Nolasco on regular rest and start them Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.

Tue Apr 12 201121:47Volstad shaky in Marlins' loss
Chris Volstad surrendered five runs on eight hits over 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the Braves Tuesday.
Another shaky outing for Volstad, who drops to 0-1 with a 5.59 ERA through two starts. He was hit hard throughout his short stay on the mound, allowing two homers and five extra-base hits total. With his aversion to strikeouts and the amount of base runners he allows, Volstad isn't a great fantasy play.

Fri Mar 11 201115:46Marlins' Volstad gives up six runs in loss
Chris Volstad surrendered six runs -- three earned -- and seven hits in three innings Friday in a loss to the Mets.
Volstad has struggled in two his three starts, leaving him with a 7.88 ERA this spring. No one is stepping up and challenging for his rotation spot just yet, but the Marlins would surely like to see him improve over the second half of the month.

Tue Mar 1 201116:16Marlins' Volstad gives up four runs in loss
Chris Volstad yielded four runs and six hits in two innings Tuesday in a loss to the Cardinals.
Matt Holliday and Allen Craig homered off him. Volstad is slated to serve as the Marlins' fifth starter, but it's possible that he could lose his spot with a poor spring. Since he went 8-1 with a 4.32 ERA after the All-Star break last season, he'd have to be really bad.
Wed Feb 16 201117:45Volstad underwent LASIK surgery this winter
Chris Volstad underwent LASIK eye surgery this offseason.
Volstad said Wednesday in Marlins camp that his vision is at 20/25 and improving. That should only help him on the mound this season. The right-hander turned in an 11-9 record, 4.58 ERA and 1.41 WHIP in 2010 and the Fish are expecting a big jump from him in 2011.

Thu Sep 30 201022:25Volstad finishes season strong, beats Pirates
Chris Volstad held the Pirates to two earned runs over six innings Thursday as the Marlins defeated the Pirates.
Volstad has finished the season strong and may have climbed into the fantasy conscience heading into 2011. The right-hander will wind up with a pedestrian 11-9 record, 4.58 ERA and 1.41 WHIP, but he's strung together three consecutive quality outings. Volstad has always had the talent.
Sat Sep 25 201021:54Volstad cruises as Marlins take down Brewers
Chris Volstad threw 6 2/3 shutout innings Saturday as the Marlins defeated the Brewers 4-0 in Milwaukee.
Volstad tossed his second career shutout last week against the Cardinals and absolutely dominated the Brew Crew on Saturday night. He scattered six hits, allowed zero walks and struck out two. With momentum on his side and a matchup against the Pirates next week, he is close to a must-start.
Mon Sep 20 201018:36Marlins' Volstad notches 2nd career shutout
Chris Volstad pitched his second career shutout Monday versus the Cardinals.
Volstad outdueled Chris Carpenter in the 4-0 game. Through 28 starts this season, he's 10-9 with a 4.82 ERA and a 98/59 K/BB ratio in 162 1/3 innings. Last year, he was 9-13 with a 5.21 ERA and a 107/59 K/BB ratio in 159 innings. The big difference is that his homers allowed have gone from 29 to 17. Still, the drop in ERA isn't all that significant. It'd help if he could cut back on the walks some.
Wed Sep 8 201017:06Volstad to begin serving 6-gm. suspension Mon
Chris Volstad will begin serving his six-game suspension Monday.
Volstad will start Sunday against the Nationals and then not again for another week. He was handed the suspension for hitting and then throwing behind Nyjer Morgan last week. It should barely throw him off.

Tue Sep 7 201023:18Volstad struggles in loss
Chris Volstad gave up five runs in five innings in a loss to the Phillies on Tuesday night.
Volstad gave up three home runs and fewer groundballs than flbyalls - both bad news items for the pitcher who has relied on worm burners when he's done well. This year, his groundball and strikeout rates are both down, and Volstad has been grasping at straws. He's hard to start in leagues of any depth at this point.
Fri Sep 3 201013:20MLB suspends Volstad six games
MLB suspended RHP Chris Volstad six games for his actions in Wednesday's game against the Nationals.
Volstad gets six games for throwing behind Nyjer Morgan. If he appeals, he can just serve the penalty around an off day later this month.
Wed Sep 1 201021:35Volstad ejected for throwing behind Morgan
Chris Volstad was ejected from Wednesday's game for throwing behind Nationals outfielder Nyjer Morgan in the sixth inning.
The attempt to hit Morgan -- for a second time in the night -- incited a benches-clearing brawl that resulted in a wild pile-up next to the mound. Punches were thrown, both by Volstad and Morgan, and the two will almost certainly face punishment from Major League Baseball. Volstad wound up allowing a total of six earned runs over five innings.
Fri Aug 27 201023:11Volstad tosses a gem vs. Braves
Chris Volstad shut down the Braves to the tune of one earned run over eight innings to earn his eighth win Friday night.
It's the best start of Volstad's season. He struck out only three but walked none and scattered six hits. The 6'8" 23-year-old has real upside down the stretch, but expect inconsistency as he perfects his sinkerball. With the Nationals on deck, Volstad is a gamble as a spot-start.
Mon Aug 16 201021:54Volstad knocked around in Monday loss
Chris Volstad lasted only five inning Monday, allowing five runs in a loss to the Pirates.
The right-hander gave up five hits, walked two and hit a batter while notching two strikeouts. Volstad hadn't lost a game since July 6 before Monday, but he really hadn't been pitching well. He now sports a 4.91 ERA and 1.46 WHIP on the season. He'll face the Astros over the weekend.
Wed Aug 11 201023:04Volstad pitches poorly but wins
Chris Volstad didn't pitch well Wednesday, giving up four runs over five innings, but he was able to hang on for the win in the Marlins' 9-5 victory.
The right-hander gave up nine hits (including a pair of home runs) and one walk while striking out two. Even in recent outings when he's been able to limit the damage as far as runs go, Volstad has allowed a lot of baserunners, so he's not on top of his game right now. He has an ugly 4.74 ERA and 1.46 WHIP on the season. The Pirates will be his next opponent.
Thu Aug 5 201023:34Volstad labors through 5 2/3 Thursday
Chris Volstad labored through 5 2/3 innings Thursday, allowing two runs in the loss to the Phillies.
Volstad was pitching from the stretch all night, as he gave up eight hits, walked three and also threw in a balk for good measure. To his credit (luck) he was able to limit the damage for the most part, though, and he ended up with a no-decision. Volstad holds a 4.63 ERA and 1.44 WHIP on the year. He will face the Nationals the next time out.
