Morneau collected career hit number 1,500 with a solo homerun in the Rockies 5-1 win over the Cubs on Friday afternoon.

He did not start the game with a southpaw on the mound for Chicago, but entered the game later in a double switch. He was hit in the neck earlier this week, but that does not appear to be a concern and he should be safe to play in fantasy lineups going forward.

With the two-hit performance, Morneau raised his season batting average to .319, keeping him narrowly ahead of the Pirates' Josh Harrison (.318) in the battle for the National League batting title. If Morneau is able to hold off Harrison, he'd become the second consecutive Colorado hitter to claim the title, after Michael Cuddyer achieved the feat in 2013.

The only real thing Morneau has to play for this season is a shot at the National League batting title (he's currently batting .315), but that's more than enough for a player to try to battle through pain in meaningless games. He'll probably get a few days off over the final two weeks, but fantasy owners should certainly hold onto him and make sure he's in lineups Monday.

With the Rockies well out of playoff contention, they will be extra cautious with the 33-year-old, but he is in the hunt for a National League batting title over the final weeks of the season.

With Michael Cuddyer (hamstring) returning from the disabled list Monday, the Rockies will ease him back into the fold at first base, where he won't be asked to track down fly balls as often as he would in the corner outfield. The day off shouldn't hurt Morneau too much, as the Rockies are set to face off against a left-hander anyway in the Mets' Jon Niese.
