A look at what's happening around the majors on Sunday: ___ AILING ASTROS Houston second baseman José Altuve says he’s tested positive for COVID-19 but hasn’t felt badly and hopes to return to the lineup soon. The 2017 AL MVP was among five Astros who were placed on the COVID-19 list on April 14. The four other players were back on the active roster within a few days. It’s unclear how much time Altuve will need before playin again. He said he received the first dose of one of the two-dose COVID-19 vaccines before testing positive, and that he has no idea how he contracted the virus. Altuve is hitting .318 with one homer, three doubles and five RBIs in 11 games. Hours after Altuve spoke, Houston starter Jake Odorizzi was forced to leave after throwing only five pitches against the Angels because of tightness in his right forearm. Fri Apr 23 202121:10Rookie Zach McKinstry goes on Dodgers' growing injured list
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed promising rookie Zach McKinstry on the 10-day injured list with a strained right oblique muscle. The major league-leading Dodgers made the move Friday, adding a fifth player to their IL. Los Angeles recalled outfielder DJ Peters from its alternate training site to make his major league debut. McKinstry is batting .296 with three homers and 14 RBIs in 17 games while playing second base, third base, right field and left field for the Dodgers. The former 33rd-round draft pick made the opening day roster for the first time in his career as a utilityman in the role previously filled by the departed Enrique Hernandez, but McKinstry quickly played his way into starts at three positions. McKinstry joins star outfielder Cody Bellinger, second baseman Gavin Lux and pitchers Tony Gonsolin and Joe Kelly on Los Angeles' IL. The Dodgers also were without outfielder Chris Taylor, who has lower back stiffness, for the second straight game Friday night against the San Diego Padres. Peters was a fourth-round pick in the 2016 draft. The native of nearby Glendora, California, had 23 homers and 81 RBIs in 2019 between Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Fri Apr 23 202115:50Column: Dodgers have chance for baseball greatness
It’s always mesmerizing to watch greatness in real time. A young Mike Tyson. An ageless Tom Brady. The Boston Celtics of the 1960s. The New York Yankees of, well, several different eras. Which brings us to the 2021 Los Angeles Dodgers. This group could become the most exceptional team in baseball history. The defining answer is still six months way, of course. You can’t claim the ultimate title without a championship attached to your resume. But, with the baseball season less than a month old, all signs point to the Dodgers making a serious run at being included in a very elite club. Maybe even the lead member. Their starting pitching is off the charts. Their lineup is stacked from top to bottom. Their player development is the best in the game. And, for good measure, they’re sitting on an apparently limitless pile of money to plug any leaks that may arise during the course of the 162-game grind. “We have a chance to do something really special,” manager Dave Roberts said just before the... Thu Apr 22 202118:30Dodgers' Cody Bellinger still healing hairline leg fracture
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers slugger Cody Bellinger is still uncertain when he will return from a hairline fracture in his left leg. Bellinger said Thursday that he feels “great,:" but the 2019 NL MVP must wait to return to the defending World Series champions' lineup. “I can’t really do much until the bone heals, which depends on each person,” Bellinger said. “But once that bone heals up, what I’ve been told is you’re ready to go from there.” Bellinger was injured April 5 when Athletics reliever Reymin Guduan inadvertently spiked him at first base in Oakland. The injury was listed as a left calf injury, but the main problem is a hairline fracture in his fibula. The Dodgers' medical team initially saw only bruising and swelling in Bellinger's calf, but the fracture was found by a CT scan after he reported pain in his leg. Bellinger is hitting in the batting cage and playing catch, but running is still not perfectly comfortable. He planned to take batting practice on the field... [More]
Fri Apr 16 202121:38Dodgers star Bellinger has hairline fracture in left leg
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers center fielder Cody Bellinger has a hairline fracture in his left fibula, manager Dave Roberts said Friday before the defending World Series champions opened a highly anticipated three-game series against the Padres. Roberts said Bellinger had a scan Thursday that showed the hairline fracture. The manager said there is no timetable for his return. “At least we know what Cody’s dealing with,” Roberts said. “Certain players heal differently, so I just don’t know where Cody is going to be at. ... I can say comfortably that it’s not a day-to-day thing, so we can kind of just put it on the back burner and let Cody do his rehab and join us hopefully soon.” Bellinger, the 2019 NL MVP, was injured on April 5 when he was cleated by Athletics pitcher Reymin Guduan on a close play at first base. He was placed on the 10-day injured list the next day and was eligible to be activated on Friday. Roberts said Bellinger is still taking swings and was going through a workout in Los Angeles earlier Friday. The Dodgers swept the Padres in the NL Division Series in October, ending San Diego’s first postseason run in 14 seasons. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Justin Turner homered in the sixth inning, and the Los Angeles Dodgers celebrated their World Series ring ceremony day with a 1-0 victory over the Washington Nationals on Friday. Walker Buehler (1-0) pitched six strong innings as the Dodgers won a tidy pitchers’ duel in their home opener without injured star outfielders Mookie Betts and Cody Bellinger. Joe Ross threw five scoreless innings for the Nationals, who lost their third straight after starting the season late and short-handed due to coronavirus cases and quarantines. Former Los Angeles reliever Luis Avilán (0-1) got the loss. The Dodgers received their World Series championship rings in a pregame event in front of the fans who weren’t allowed inside Dodger Stadium in 2020 while their franchise won its seventh title. Clayton Kershaw, Betts and their teammates were cheered by a pandemic-limited sellout crowd of 15,036 while they got their jewelry at Chavez Ravine. Fri Apr 9 202116:54Dodgers put Cody Bellinger on injured list with calf problem
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed former NL MVP Cody Bellinger on the injured list with a bruised left calf. The World Series champions made the move Friday before Bellinger and his teammates received their championship rings ahead of the Dodgers' home opener against Washington. Bellinger was accidentally spiked by Athletics reliever Reymin Guduan on Monday while beating out an infield single in the ninth inning of the Dodgers' 10-3 win in Oakland. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said they had not seen “significant” improvement in Bellinger's leg since the injury, but the outfielder was already jogging and moving. He missed the final two games of Los Angeles' series in Oakland. “All the tests say it’ll be a short-term missing of time rather than a long-term, which is great news all around,” Roberts said. Bellinger batted .211 with two RBIs in the first four games of the season. He is eligible to return April 16 when the Dodgers open a series in San Diego. Mookie Betts also wasn't in the starting lineup for the Dodgers' home opener against Washington due to back stiffness, but Roberts thought the former AL MVP could be available to pinch-hit. Betts was scratched from Wednesday's game in Oakland. Versatile veteran Chris Taylor took Bellinger's typical starting spot in center field for the Dodgers' home opener. Zach McKinstry started for Betts in right field. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
