Sun May 15 201619:03A's Valencia finds his power stroke
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Before Friday's game, Danny Valencia's season had been marked by injuries, like the hamstring problem that had kept him out since Monday, part of the reason he hadn't hit a home run all season.Three games later, Valencia has five home runs, including three Sunday, the biggest a two-run go-ahead blast with two outs in the ninth inning of a 7-6 win over the Tampa Rays that might jump-start Oakland as it returns home from a nine-game road trip."It's one of those days and experiences that I've never done before," Valencia said. "It felt great and felt great to be on the winning side of it."Valencia hit two home runs in Friday's win, the first set up by a Billy Burns at-bat in which he fouled off 11 pitches before getting Oakland's first hit of the game. On Sunday, it was Burns, down to his last strike, who got a two-out double to set up Valencia's home run. Valencia tied the club record with three home runs - it has happened 27 times in franchise history, and his five home runs tied the team record for most in a three- or four-game series. The only other A's player to hit five in a three-game series were Mark McGwire (three times) and Gus Zernial in 1951.Valencia has a 10-game hitting streak and is hitting .405 in that stretch. If he gets a hit in next game he'll match his career long of 11 games, set in 2011.
