A look at what's happening around the majors Tuesday:MISTER 3,000CC Sabathia (1-0, 2.40 ERA) needs three strikeouts for 3,000 when the New York Yankees visit Arizona. The 38-year-old veteran, who plans to retire after this season, is trying to join Randy Johnson and Steve Carlton as the only left-handers to reach the milestone. Sabathia would become the 17th member of the club and first to enter since John Smoltz in 2008. With 13 players on the injured list, the depleted Yankees (17-11) have still managed to win three straight and 11 of 13. But in Arizona, they will be facing a team that currently has a winning record for only the second series this season. New York was swept by Houston in three games from April 8-10.INJURY WATCHSome of the game's top stars have hobbled into the work week. NL MVP Christian Yelich sat out Monday, a day after the Brewers right fielder left a game with lower back soreness. Mon Apr 29 201922:56Twins 3B Miguel Sano to start minor league rehab Tuesday
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) β€” Minnesota Twins third baseman Miguel Sano will begin an injury rehab assignment with Class A Fort Myers on Tuesday after recovering from a right heel laceration.Sano missed all of spring training and the start of the season. He cut his right foot falling down metal steps celebrating a winter league championship in the Dominican Republic.Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said Sano will start with partial games at Fort Myers and built himself up. Sano is expected to make stops in Double-A and Triple-A during a lengthy assignment."He has to get to a number of at-bats, which I'm not ready to kind of pout that number out there, but he has to get a sufficient number of at-bats where we feel confident that we're not putting him at a disservice to himself or us to just bring him back here," Baldelli said.Sano hit .199 with 13 homers in 71 games with Minnesota last season. The 25-year-old set out to improve his conditioning in the offseason after injuries hampered his production."That's been a big part of us not wanting to rush him," Baldelli said. "He worked really hard this offseason. Let's just say what it is. He made this a priority. His body and his career went ahead of literally everything else going on. He did a great job. That's why him dealing with what he dealt with was so difficult."___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

Wed Mar 27 201919:30Twins set opening day roster with 5-man bench
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) β€” The Minnesota Twins have placed three relievers on the 10-day injured list: right-handers Matt Magill (shoulder) and Addison Reed (thumb) and left-hander Gabriel Moya (shoulder). The moves Wednesday meant 30-year-old right-hander Ryne Harper was on the opening day roster. Harper, who was in camp as a non-roster invitee, has yet to pitch in the majors after nine seasons in the minors. With so many off days at the beginning of the schedule, the Twins will only need four starting pitchers so lefty Martin Perez will start in the bullpen. That allowed rookie manager Rocco Baldelli to begin with a five-man bench: catchers Willians Astudillo and Mitch Garver, infielders Ehire Adrianza and Tyler Austin and outfielder Jake Cave. Third baseman Miguel Sano (heel) is also on the injured list.___More AP baseball coverage: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Wed Mar 6 201903:05Royals' Perez out for season, Yanks' Severino to miss opener
Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez is headed for Tommy John surgery and out for the season. New York Yankees ace Luis Severino is shut down, too β€” at least through opening day.Hours after Severino stopped warming up in the bullpen because of an inflamed right shoulder, the Royals announced more damaging news Tuesday: Perez will have surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right elbow, keeping the six-time All-Star off the field for the entire year.Perez hurt the elbow during a workout last week and said over the weekend that he was harboring a slim hope he might be able to play through it. Instead, he is expected to undergo surgery Wednesday."There was nothing that can prepare us for this. There was no information we had that led us this direction," Royals general manager Dayton Moore said. "Salvy was having no issues. He's asymptomatic. He has wear and tear, just like any 28-year-old catcher who's been squatting and catching since he was 12 years old. There was no warning sign... [More]

Tue Mar 5 201920:15Yanks ace Severino out on opening day with inflamed shoulder
New York Yankees ace Luis Severino will miss opening day because of an inflamed right shoulder that acted up while he was getting loose for his first spring training start.Severino felt something wrong when he threw his first slider in the bullpen and was immediately scratched. He won't throw for two weeks, manager Aaron Boone said after a 5-1 win over Atlanta."Obviously, anytime a starting pitcher and a guy like Sevie walks off while he's warming up to start a game, you always get worried and concerned about that," Boone said. "But it sounds like the shoulder is pretty clean, it's just the inflammation issue. So if that's the case, then hopefully two weeks is something that will do the trick, then he can start ramping back up with his throwing program, but we'll re-evaluate it also at the same time."Masahiro Tanaka, James Paxton, CC Sabathia and J.A. Happ are also projected to be in the Yankees' rotation. Luis Cessa, Jonathan Loaisiga and Domingo German are possible short-term replacements... [More]

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) β€” Minnesota Twins third baseman Miguel Sano will likely miss the first month of the regular season, following another procedure to repair a severe cut above the heel on his right foot.Sano was sent to a plastic surgeon at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, where he underwent an operation called a debridement that removes damaged tissue or foreign objects from a wound, Twins chief baseball officer Derek Falvey said Tuesday. The gash Sano suffered Jan. 26 in his native Dominican Republic when he slipped on some metal stairs on a stage during his team's winter league championship celebration was not healing as expected, so the Twins sought a more aggressive treatment for their 25-year-old slugger whose major league career has been marked more by nagging injuries than home runs.Falvey said Sano could resume baseball activity in about three weeks, with the goal of starting a minor league rehabilitation assignment in mid-April and joining the Twins in May.Fortunately for the Twins,... Sun Feb 17 201914:02'The new Miguel Sano' trimmed down as Twins camp opens
FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) β€” Miguel Sano walked into the Minnesota Twins' clubhouse just before 8 a.m., looking trimmed down in rainbow sneakers and a black sweat suit."You look good," said catcher Jason Castro, a sentiment echoed by teammates between hugs and handshakes with the 25-year-old slugger.A slimmer Sano is a promising sign for Minnesota. He struggled with his weight last season following offseason surgery on his left shin and was demoted to Class A Fort Myers in mid-June after hitting .203 over 37 games. He finished the year at .199 with 13 homers in 71 games."I worked really hard and I've been doing a lot of yoga and a lot of agility stuff and a lot of lifting, so I feel a lot different from last year," Sano said. "I feel like this year can be a lot different for everybody."One of Sano's first stops Sunday was expected to be the trainer's room. He arrived to camp with a cut on his lower right leg that he suffered near the end of the Dominican winter ball season."Otherwise, besides... [More]

Sat Jan 26 201918:19Twins' Buxton turns frustration into motivation and muscle
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) β€” Byron Buxton hasn't forgotten his extended, unexpected stay in the minor leagues last summer. The inconsistent Twins center fielder is eager to show the experience made him stronger. After an offseason in the weight room, one look is about all it takes."People tell you to take that frustration as fuel," Buxton said. "And that's something I did, as well, to help me do what I want to do."Buxton returned to Minnesota for TwinsFest this weekend with 21 pounds of muscle packed onto his lean, athletic frame. He credits that to a perceived slight from the organization, which held him in the minor leagues last season and declined to recall him when rosters expanded in September β€” a move that will allow Minnesota to delay Buxton's free agency for a year.Buxton admitted during a Twin Cities hospital visit in December that the September snub had gotten to him. He's put the frustration to good use β€” the discontentment served as his offseason motivation."I had a great workout partner... [More]
Fri Jan 25 201917:38Building Twins relationships has been Baldelli's big task
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) β€” While his bosses with the Minnesota Twins have been constructing the roster, new manager Rocco Baldelli has been busy building relationships with the players now under his supervision. His ability and desire to do that was one of the biggest reasons why he got the job, after all."People get a feel for other people over time, and you just try to be yourself and you end up proving yourself every day," Baldelli said. "That's how we're going to build what we're going to build here."Though Baldelli committed much of the last three months to those getting-to-know-you talks with players, coaches and other Twins staff he'll be working closely with, this week has provided his first significant opportunity to conducting these conversations in person with the first pitchers and catchers workout of spring training fast approaching on Feb. 14.After spending four days with starting pitcher Jose Berrios and left fielder Eddie Rosario for meet-and-greets with fans on one leg of the team's... Wed Jan 2 201917:36Twins sign Cruz for DH power, clubhouse leadership
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) β€” With an opening for a designated hitter and a need for more power in the lineup, the Minnesota Twins found quite a fit on the free agent market with a six-time All-Star in Nelson Cruz. They'll be counting on his impact beyond the middle of the batting order. There's a clubhouse filled with still-developing players who could use his wisdom, too.The Twins signed Cruz to a one-year, $14.3 million contract that comes with a $12 million club option for 2020, formalizing Wednesday their addition of a player whose 203 home runs over the previous five seasons are the most in the major leagues during that span."I don't think we view Nelson just as a DH," Twins general manager Thad Levine said. "He's clearly going to be occupying that spot in the lineup, but as we've intimated, and you've got to hear in his voice, what he brings to the table is so much more than that. So we did prioritize this type of offensive production. We did try to prioritize this type of quality of character... [More]

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) β€” Second baseman Jonathan Schoop and the Twins agreed to a $7.5 million, one-year contract on Thursday, another step in an offseason remake of Minnesota's infield.Schoop's deal would allow him to earn a $100,000 performance bonus for reaching 600 plate appearances, plus additional award bonuses.
