"He's feeling better," manager Bruce Bochy said of Stratton, who landed on the DL with a right calf strain. Stratton (0-2, 7.71 ERA) could spend the rest of the season in the rotation, the manager said. "He's a four-pitch guy. He's got some (velocity), low 90s. And, when his command is sharp, he works up and down pretty well. He's got a good slider and changeup. He's got the equipment to be a 4 or 5 starter."

Stratton's second pitch of the top of the 10th was belted for a home run by Dodgers 1B Adrian Gonzalez. But the Giants bailed out the rookie with a two-run rally in the bottom of the 10th. The appearance was just Stratton's third of the season.

Stratton, who last started Sunday, will work out of the bullpen initially, since long reliever Albert Suarez is unavailable after throwing 65 pitches in five innings Friday in relief of Cain. Manager Bruce Bochy said Suarez is a candidate to start Wednesday at Atlanta in place of Cain, although Bochy said he would use Suarez before then if needed to help win a game. Bochy said Stratton and others will also be considered for that assignment against the Braves.
