Thu Jul 16 201514:58Barea signed four-year
Barea signed a four-year, $16 million deal with the Mavericks two weeks after agreeing to a two-year, $5.6 million contract, the Dallas Morning News reports.
The Mavericks had money to burn after the Clippers' DeAndre Jordan spurned their max offer. He'll head into training camp competing with Devin Harris and Raymond Felton for backup point guard minutes, but given their lack of depth at shooting guard and Wesley Matthews' uncertainty, Barea could garner meaningful minutes at the start of the regular season.
Mon Jul 6 201517:06J.J. Barea: Returns To Dallas
Barea has agreed to a two-year deal with the Mavericks for $5.6 million, David Aldridge of NBA.com reports.
Barea heads back to Dallas where he made 77 appearances last season at 18 minutes per game. Given that the Mavericks are still trying to acquire Jeremy Lin, Barea will enter a point guard by committee situation with Devin Harris and Raymond Felton. Neither of the incumbent point guard options proved themselves more reliable than the other last season, and so there should be a battle during training camp to see who takes over the starting duties after the unceremonious departure of Rajon Rondo.
Mon May 4 201516:10Barea said he hopes to return to Mavericks next season
Barea said he hopes to return to the Mavericks next season, ESPN reports.
A free agent his offseason, Barea expressed his interest in returning to Dallas, where he's played six of his nine NBA seasons. The other three were spent in Minnesota, where Barea signed as a free agent after helping the Mavs to the 2011 title. He returned to Dallas this season on a veteran's minimum deal after being bought out by the Wolves. While Barea intimated that he may not be willing to accept another minimum contract, he also noted that he doesn't plan to demand a large deal. According to a source, Barea, 30, is expected to seek a two- or three-year deal that would pay him around $3 million annually. Even with Devin Harris and Raymond Felton ($3.95 million player option) under contract next season, the Mavs will likely attempt to re-sign Barea, who is one of the most dependable backup point guards in the league. His assist to turnover ratio in 2014-15 ranked third in the NBA behind only Chris Paul and Ty Lawson.

Barea, who recently took over as the starting point guard with Rajon Rondo out, was able to put up a solid performance Tuesday in spite of a cold shooting night. While it's unclear if Barea will remain in Dallas next season, he's shown that he can produce efficiently when given the minutes.

Barea had 13 points, six rebounds, and two assists in 34 minutes off the bench in Tuesday's Game 2 loss to Houston.
Barea was already in line for an increased role with Devin Harris (toe) sidelined, but Rajon Rondo's foul trouble and overall ineffectiveness allowed him to run the point for most of Tuesday's game. As long as Harris is out, Barea should still see a good amount of run, but it's unlikely that Rondo will get only 10 minutes of playing time in another playoff game.
