RHP Jose Fernandez will go for his ninth straight victory when he starts at Arizona on Saturday, a streak that would enable him to break a tie with LHP Chris Hammond for the franchise record for consecutive victories. Fernandez, 23, is 9-2 with a 2.29 ERA, and his numbers during his eight-game winning streak are even better -- a 1.38 ERA and 78 strikeouts. Only former Dbacks LHP Randy Johnson (1999, 2000) and Dodgers LHP Clayton Kershaw have better numbers during an eight-game winning streak. "I think we see a more under control guy that is using his whole mix," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "Not going out and throwing the ball through a wall every pitch."

RHP Jose Fernandez, who can become a free agent after the 2018 season, has repeatedly declined to discuss his future with the team. The subject came up again this week when Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg signed a seven-year, $175 million contract extension. Strasburg and Fernandez share an agent -- Scott Boras -- who usually has his players test free agency. But the Strasburg signing gives the Marlins some hope they can retain Fernandez long term.

RHP Jose Fernandez had two hits Saturday night, but it was a hit he allowed his opposite number that might have made the difference in Miami's 7-2 loss to the Giants. Fernandez intentionally walked Giants OF Gregor Blanco to load the bases with one out in the fourth inning of a 2-1 game, hoping to get RHP Jake Peavy to hit into an inning-ending double play. Instead, Peavy lashed a two-run single, propelling the Giants to the one-sided win. Fernandez's first start at AT&T Park was not a memorable one. He allowed four runs and seven hits in five innings.

RHP Jose Fernandez will be seeking his third consecutive impressive outing when he starts the middle game of a three-game series against the San Francisco Giants on Saturday night. The Marlins ace responded to a five-run performance in a loss to Detroit in his season debut with a pair of one-run efforts against the New York Mets and Washington Nationals, winning the latter to even his record at 1-1. If there's still room for improvement, it's in his walks allowed. Fernandez has walked seven in 11 innings in his last two games. He won his only career start (six innings, three runs) against the Giants.
