Tue Aug 23 201112:02Ryan (shoulder) out for first game Tuesday
Brendan Ryan was held out of the first half of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Indians.
Ryan played his first game since August 3 on Monday night, but finished 0-for-3 with two strikeouts. The Mariners clearly don't believe his left shoulder is healthy enough yet to resume everyday shortstop duties.

Mon Aug 22 201115:47Ryan (shoulder) back in M's lineup Monday
Brendan Ryan (shoulder) is back in the Mariners' starting lineup on Monday evening.
Ryan was activated from the disabled list Friday but sat out all weekend as a precautionary measure. He missed close to three weeks with a sprained AC joint in his shoulder.

Fri Aug 19 201123:26Brendan Ryan still dealing with shoulder
Brendan Ryan didn't play Friday in his first game back from the DL and is questionable for Saturday's game, according to manager Eric Wedge.
So why did the Mariners activate him? Ryan missed the minimum 15 days with a sprained AC joint, and Seattle apparently just had to have him back at less than 100 percent for their run at 70 wins.

Fri Aug 19 201115:47Mariners activate Brendan Ryan from DL
Mariners activated SS Brendan Ryan from the 15-day disabled list.
Ryan hasn't played since August 3 due to a sprained AC joint in his left shoulder. He returns to a .263/.322/.338 batting line to go along with two homers, 34 RBI and a .660 OPS over 406 plate appearances.

Mon Aug 8 201118:48M's place INF Ryan (shoulder) on DL
Mariners placed SS Brendan Ryan on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 4, with a sprained AC joint in his left shoulder.
As expected. Ryan suffered the injury in a collision with teammate Adam Kennedy last Wednesday and will likely need 10-14 days before he is ready for game action. Jack Wilson will likely see most of the playing time at shortstop during his absence.

Sun Jul 24 201117:07Brendan Ryan hits grand slam in loss
Brendan Ryan doubled and hit a grand slam in Seattle's 12-8 loss to the Red Sox on Sunday.
The big afternoon increased Ryan's OPS from .647 to .666. Obviously still awful, but the owner of a .264 average and 32 RBI through his first 322 at-bats, he's not a horrendous AL-only league option.

Tue Jul 19 201123:46Ryan goes 3-for-6 with a homer in loss
Brendan Ryan went 3-for-6 with a walk, a double, a home run and two runs scored in a 14-inning loss against the Blue Jays Tuesday.
It was his first multi-hit game and first double since July 7, his first RBI since July 8 and his first home run of the season. The slick-fielding shortstop is nobody's idea of an ideal No. 2 hitter despite his placement in Seattle's lineup. He's now hitting .254/.315/.321 on the season.

Wed Jul 6 201118:14Brendan Ryan goes hitless in loss
Brendan Ryan went 0-for-4 as the Mariners' No. 2 hitter in Wednesday's loss to the A's.
Ryan has essentially been impersonating Chone Figgins since replacing him in the two hole, as he's hit just .216 with four extra-base hits and 12 runs scored in 33 games. It'd seem to be time for the Mariners to try Dustin Ackley up there.

Mon May 30 201113:37Ryan moved to No. 2 spot in Mariners' lineup
Brendan Ryan is batting second in the Mariners' order Monday afternoon against the Orioles.
As it should be. Ryan is has posted a scorching-hot .371/.420/.468 slash line over 62 at-bats in the month of May with five extra-base hits and 10 RBI. Chone Figgins, sporting a .496 OPS on the year, has been bumped to the eighth spot in the Seattle lineup.

Fri May 27 201110:54Brendan Ryan piling up hits
Brendan Ryan has a six-game hitting streak and has tallied multiple hits in five of those contests.
The slick-fielding shortstop is finally contributing at the plate for the surging Mariners. His .260/.327/.328 batting line for the season is still quite modest, but it's tolerable for a guy that helps out so much with the glove.

Tue May 3 201110:55Brendan Ryan struggling at the plate
Brendan Ryan is batting just .184/.276/.224 across 90 plate appearances this season for Seattle.
Known primarily for his defense, Ryan has no home runs and only six RBI on the year. He should continue drawing starts at shortstop for the M's because of his impressive range, but the 29-year-old has zero fantasy value.

Sat Mar 26 201119:20Brendan Ryan's spring average drops to .188
Brendan Ryan went 0-for-5 in Saturday's 2-1 loss to the Brewers.
He's now hitting .188 in 48 spring at-bats. Ryan won the starting job at shortstop for the M's based on his stellar defense, but he didn't hit above .250 in any month last season, and that season-long slump at the dish has carried over into spring.

Tue Mar 22 201112:14Brendan Ryan named M's starting shortstop
The Mariners have selected Brendan Ryan as their starting shortstop.
Jack Wilson will move to second base to open the season. The two should make an excellent double-play combination and provide the M's pitching staff with great defense up the middle, but it's going to be another long year offensively for Seattle.

Mon Mar 7 201118:29Ryan's spring average drops to .143
Brendan Ryan's slow start continued on Monday, as the former Cardinal went 0-for-3 against the A's.
He's now hitting .143 through 14 at-bats. Ryan hit .252 after the All-Star break last season after hitting .194 before it, but the pitcher-friendly confines of Safeco Field should eliminate any chance he has of rebounding to something close to his 2009 average of .292.

Fri Feb 11 201115:42Cards soured on Ryan because of tardiness
Cardinals reliever Ryan Franklin revealed Friday that Brendan Ryan was repeatedly late to buses and practices last season with St. Louis.
Ryan was shipped off to the Mariners in mid-December for unproven right-hander Mikael Cleto. Rumors were flying at the time that the Cardinals' front office had soured on the shortstop, but no reason was ever given as to why that might have happened. Now we at least know part of it. Asked Friday morning on St. Louis radio whether the club will miss Ryan, Franklin replied, "Yeah, sure. Alright. I'll miss giving him a hard time." Franklin continued, "It's just the things he done. If you're tardy once, don't be tardy again."
