"He's played outfield before, and I thought he handled every ball pretty well," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "In (2014) we had him out there quite a bit. It was more in right, but it kind of gave me an option."

DH Stephen Vogt had something of a drop-the-mike moment in his final game of 2016. Vogt's first at-bat, against Seattle ace Felix Hernandez, resulted in a solo home run to left field. Vogt didn't play again, as he was replaced by pinch-hitter Chad Pinder in what was supposed to be his next at-bat two innings later. Manager Bob Melvin said he wanted to get Vogt out of the game right away to send him out on a good note.

Vogt lined a 92 mph fastball from RHP Deolis Guerra down the right-field line for a solo drive in the Athletics' 2-1 loss to the Los Angeles Angels. Vogt, who finished 1-for-4 with one strikeout, also extended his hitting streak to five games. Vogt has hit 12 of his 13 homers against right-handed pitchers, with 11 being solo efforts.

He did have a double in the fifth inning Sunday against the Cleveland Indians. It was his 21st double of the season, tying him with Buster Posey for the second most in the majors by a catcher.
