RHP Jose Berrios came within one hit of not completing the five innings necessary to qualify for a win Sunday. Berrios (13-8) retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced, gave up his first hit in the fourth but surrendered two in the fifth and was looking wobbly until he got 1B Efren Navarro to flyout deep to left to end the inning. "Jose was sharp early," manager Paul Molitor said. "He ran into trouble and gave up a couple kind of scratch runs there but we got 'em right back. He got down to his last guy before we were going to make a change and he got us off the field. And I thought that was enough for the day." Berrios ended allowing two runs on five hits with a pair of walks and six strikeouts.

RHP Jose Berrios struck out nine on Thursday night against the Chicago White Sox, but still couldn't do enough to find success away from home. Berrios, who surpassed the 100-strikeout mark for the season, dropped to 0-5 with a 7.24 ERA over his last seven road starts during which he has given up 22 runs over 27 1/3 innings. His loss to the White Sox marked the first time this season Berrios has lost to an American League Central Division opponent on a night when Twins manager Paul Molitor said Berrios was a "mixed bag" when it came to his ability to get hitters out. "He made pitches at time, but he gave up a lot of hits," Molitor said. "He did struggle with his command."

RHP Jose Berrios gave up five first-inning runs to Detroit on Saturday night but the Twins took him off the hook with five in the third and six more over the next three innings. 3B Nicholas Castellanos got a topped-grounder RBI single before C James McCann hit a grand slam in the first. "We couldn't come up with that ball cleanly on Castellanos' ball," manager Paul Molitor said. "But you hope to pick your guys up and keep it at one. McCann looked like he was hunting that first-pitch breaking ball. We had started off quite a few righties prior to him with a first-pitch breaking ball. I think he was looking for it. Left it in the middle of the plate. He didn't have too long a leash after that." Berrios lasted 3 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on six hits.

RHP Jose Berrios (10-5) allowed two homers and five runs in the first inning on Sunday against Texas. A 32-minute rain delay might have been just the answer to settle down the second-year starter. After three hits and a walk in the first, he surrendered just three hits the rest of the way and struck out six batters in the game. Adrian Beltre's first-inning homer was the first Berrios had given up in 24 2/3 innings.
