Hughes (10-8) allowed three runs on seven hits, while walking one and striking out five over six innings on Wednesday, but ended up taking the loss against the Royals.
The quality start was the first for Hughes in over three weeks, though he still ended up being stuck with his third straight loss. He was cruising through the first five innings, but was touched up for three RBI doubles in the sixth to account for all the runs the Royals would end up scoring. Hughes had a 3.09 ERA through his first 14 starts, but has since posted a 6.09 ERA over his last eight. He'll take on the light-hitting Padres next week in his next scheduled start.
Wed Jul 30 201417:20Phil Hughes: (Shin) Will Start Wednesday
Hughes (shin) has been confirmed as Wednesday's starter against the Royals, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Hughes was fortunate enough to escape with just a contusion after being drilled by a line drive in the fourth inning of his last start, and he will not end up missing a turn in the rotation. In his last seven starts, Hughes has gone 3-4 with a 6.31 ERA.

Phil Hughes (shin) will be fine for his next scheduled start.
Hughes exited Thursday's outing after being hit in the right shin by a comebacker, but he's feeling much better and will not miss his next turn. The right-hander has put up a 4.10 ERA but a terrific 113/12 K/BB ratio over 131 2/3 innings this season.

Thu Jul 24 201421:38Phil Hughes day-to-day with bruised shin
Phil Hughes is considered day-to-day after being diagnosed with a bruised right shin.
Hughes was injured when he took an Adam Dunn comebacker in the fourth inning of Thursday's outing versus the White Sox. It doesn't appear that X-rays will be required, so Hughes should have a good shot to make his next start. He struck out four while allowing two runs over three frames before exiting.

Thu Jul 24 201421:10Hughes exits after taking comebacker off leg
Phil Hughes left Thursday's start versus the White Sox after being hit in the right leg by a comebacker.
Adam Dunn's smash appeared to hit Hughes' shin, and he eventually limped off the field with the Twins' trainer. He'll likely go for an X-ray, at which point an update on his status will be available.

Sun Jul 13 201422:20Hughes allows five runs but earns win Sunday
Phil Hughes allowed 10 hits and five runs over five innings but took the win against the Rockies on Sunday.
Hughes was staked to a five-run lead, but he very nearly didn't hang on to get his 10th win. The right-hander did manage to strike out six while not walking a batter. It's a good end to a good first half for Hughes, who goes into the break with a 3.92 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 108/11 K/BB ratio over 121 2/3 innings. He seems to have turned a corner this year, and his good first half should carry over into the second.

Wed Jul 9 201400:50Hughes shuts out Mariners in 7+ IP, Ks 8
Phil Hughes struck out eight while tossing 7 1/3 shutout frames in Tuesday's 2-0 victory over the Mariners.
Hughes scattered eight hits and declined to issue a free pass in a return to his elite May form (3-0, 1.62 ERA). The veteran right-hander needed a positive outing after going 1-2 with an 8.05 ERA in his past three starts, a stretch that likely cost him a chance to pitch in his home ballpark in next week's All-Star Game. Having improved to 9-5 with a 3.70 ERA and 1.17 WHIP, Hughes travels to Colorado on Sunday to close out a first half renaissance.

Thu Jul 3 201422:59Hughes torched by his former team in 5th loss
Phil Hughes was rocked by his former team, allowing seven runs in 6 1/3 innings in Thursday's loss to the Yankees.
It's easily the worst start of the season for Hughes, who pitched well against the Yankees back on June 1. The right-hander surrendered two home runs, both in the fourth inning, to Carlos Beltran and Zelous Wheeler. Overall, he allowed eight hits, walked one, and struck out six. Hughes may be experiencing some regression, as he has struggled in four out of his last six starts. He now sports a 3.95 ERA, a 1.18 WHIP, and a 94/11 K/BB ratio, which he'll take into next week's start against the Mariners at Safeco Field.

Sat Jun 28 201418:46Hughes rocked for five runs on 11 hits by TEX
Phil Hughes was knocked around for five earned runs on 11 hits Saturday against the Rangers.
It's the second straight rough outing for Hughes, who is regressing quickly from his impressive start to the 2014 season. He struck out six Texas hitters on Saturday and issued only one walk, but the Rangers battered him for nine singles and two doubles. Hughes will try to get back on track next week against his former team, the Yankees.

Sun Jun 22 201419:21Hughes allows five runs in ugly win Sunday
Phil Hughes allowed five runs on eight hits in five innings but came away with the win against the White Sox on Sunday.
The White Sox did all of their damage in the third inning, when Hughes allowed six of his eight hits on the afternoon. Otherwise, it was largely a start like many of Hughes' in 2014 -- even after the unbecoming start, Hughes owns a 3.40 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 15 starts. He'll look for a similar result but a better showing Saturday at the Rangers.

Tue Jun 17 201422:11Hughes allows two runs in complete-game loss
Phil Hughes allowed two runs on eight hits in a complete-game loss to the Red Sox on Tuesday.
Hughes fanned six in the outing while not walking a batter. Even in the loss, the right-hander continues to pitch like one of the best pitchers in the American League -- outside of a start earlier this month against the Astros, Hughes has turned in a quality start in 10 of his last 11 starts. He owns a 3.09 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 78/8 K/BB ratio over 90 1/3 innings this season, and he'll take on the White Sox on Sunday.

Wed Jun 11 201416:29Phil Hughes whiffs nine over seven scoreless
Phil Hughes struck out nine while tossing seven shutout frames in Wednesday's 7-2 victory over the Blue Jays.
He allowed seven hits and didn't walk anyone. The nine punchouts were a season high for the right-hander. Hughes' best work probably came in the sixth inning, when he was able to strand runners at first and third with no one out with a Jose Bautista foulout and strikeouts over Edwin Encarnacion and Adam Lind. The righty now boasts a 3.17 ERA and 70/8 K/BB ratio over 82 1/3 innings this season. He'll try to keep it going next week in Boston.

Sat Jun 7 201401:12Hughes gives up five runs in loss to Astros
Phil Hughes was knocked around for a season-high five runs over six innings Friday in a loss to the Astros.
It was his first loss since April 15. Hughes fell victim to the home run ball on Friday, as he gave up three of them. He's a fly ball pitcher, so he still figures to have his bad days from time-to-time. Still, he struck out seven and walked none and still owns a fine 3.46 ERA through 12 starts this season. He'll look to bounce back next week when he faces a tough test against the Blue Jays in Toronto.

Sun Jun 1 201416:42Hughes goes eight strong, beat Yankees
Phil Hughes stymied his former team Sunday, holding the Yankees to two runs on just three hits and two walks over eight frames in a 7-2 victory.
Hughes whiffed six on the day and was in control much of the afternoon aside from the two-run fourth inning. It's a very encouraging start, as Hughes entered the outing with a career 4.82 ERA at Yankee Stadium. After a brilliant May that saw him post a 1.62 ERA without walking a batter, the righty has gotten off on the right foot in June. Hughes will try to keep it going next weekend against the Astros.

Phil Hughes turned in another quality start in a no-decision on Tuesday, allowing three runs over seven innings against the Rangers.
Hughes gave up eight hits and didn't walk a batter while striking out three. The outing marked the seventh straight quality start for Hughes, who owns a 3.23 ERA and 1.19 WHIP for the year. Unlike teammate Ricky Nolasco, Hughes has been well worth the money the Twins dished out for his services over the winter. He'll return to his former home Sunday when the Twins visit the Yankees.

Thu May 15 201417:01Phil Hughes strikes out eight Red Sox
Phil Hughes limited the Red Sox to one run in six innings and struck out eight on Thursday.
Hughes gave up a bunch of flyballs once again, but this time, they all stayed in the park. It's also helped his cause that he hasn't walked anyone in nearly a month; he's gone four straight starts without a base on balls. He'll give up more homers as times goes on, but he's on quite a roll right now.

He's been a tremendous addition to the Twins rotation thus far, posting a 4-1 record, 3.92 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 32/6 K/BB ratio through his first 41 1/3 innings. He'll look to keep it rolling when he takes on the Red Sox at home on Thursday.
