Phillies and RHP Kyle Kendrick avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $7.675 million contract.
It's significantly higher than the $6.6 million projection from MLBTradeRumors.com in what was Kendrick's final year of arbitration eligibility. The veteran right-hander posted a disappointing 4.70 ERA last season but held a 3.61 mark over the two previous seasons. He'll slide in behind Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels in the Phillies' rotation.

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro said Saturday that the Phillies will tender Kyle Kendrick a contract this winter.
Kendrick could make around $8 million in his final year of arbitration, but Amaro indicated that it was an easy decision. "I don't know why people are asking about that," the general manager said. "We will [bring him back]." Kendrick's 2013 season ended early due to a sore shoulder, but the Phils are confident that's it's of no concern. He posted a 4.70 ERA this season but put up a 3.61 mark across the previous two campaigns.

An MRI on Kendrick's right shoulder revealed only tendinitis, but it's not a given that he'll rejoin the rotation this season. "He was told to play catch and toss, so that's a good thing for him," Phillies interim manager Ryne Sandberg said. "[We'll] leave it at that for right now."

Kendrick was done in by Mets starter Jon Niese on a couple levels, as the opposing pitcher tossed a complete-game shutout while also knocking a three-run double for the majority of the damage done against Kendrick on the night. Kendrick gave up five hits and four walks, sustaining his third loss in his last four starts. He fell to 10-11 with a 4.40 ERA on the year. He'll try to get back on the right path Sunday at the Cubs.

Kendrick surrendered eight hits, walked one, hit a batter and didn't record a strikeout. The Giants didn't scorch the ball off the righty, as seven of their eight hits were singles, but Kendrick wasn't spotting hit pitches where he wanted. It's the fourth time in his last six outings that he's allowed at least four runs, pushing his ERA up to 4.29, the highest it's been since April 10. Kendrick gets the Cubs at home next week.

Kyle Kendrick was knocked around for six runs on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings on Friday, but thanks to an outpouring of offensive support, still managed to defeat the Mets.
Kendrick whiffed seven on the evening while walking one. After being staked to an early 11-0 lead, Kendrick appeared to put it on cruise control, but allowed the Mets to scratch out six runs in innings 4-through-6 to get back into the game. He'll go in search of his 10th victory when he takes on the Cardinals in Saint Louis on Thursday.
