Tue Sep 2 201419:00Smith out of lineup Tuesday
Smith is out of the lineup Tuesday, the Union-Tribune's Jeff Sanders reports.
The Padres will mix things up in the outfield down the stretch, but Smith should still be in the lineup most days, as he's had the best season by a Padres outfielder by far, slashing .277/.382/.467. Abraham Almonte will start in left field Tuesday.
Sat Aug 23 201416:54Smith out of lineup Saturday against Diamondbacks
Smith is out of the lineup Saturday against the Diamondbacks.
Abraham Almonte will move over to left field with Smith sitting, as usual, against a lefty starter (Vidal Nuno). Smith is 11-for-39 (.282 average) against southpaws this season but is just a .208/.285/.320 career hitter against lefties.

Smith boasts a .326/.434/.535 line with one home run, one triple, four doubles, seven RBI, five runs, and an 8:6 BB:K in 43 at-bats in August.
Smith has only failed to tally a hit in two of 10 appearances, but the additional extra-base hits this month have boosted his post-All-Star break slash line to a robust .337/.417/.506. Because all of his nods come against right-handed starters, he remains a valuable piece to fantasy outfields. However, just 38 of his 341 at-bats in 2014 have occurred against southpaws, so expect him to yield left field to Tommy Medica in such a situation, if recent trends are any indication.
Wed Aug 13 201416:38Smith will be out of lineup Wednesday for second straight game
Smith will be out of the lineup Wednesday for the second straight game, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
The Rockies' lefty-heavy rotation will result in minimal usage for Smith during the series. Tommy Medica will man left field in his place.
Tue Aug 12 201418:16Smith out of Padres' lineup Tuesday against Rockies
Smith is out of the Padres' lineup Tuesday against the Rockies.
Manager Bud Black has been consistent in shielding Smith from lefties all season and that won't change anytime soon. Tommy Medica will start in left field Tuesday as Jedd Gyorko moves up to the No. 3 spot in the order against southpaw Yohan Flande.

Smith went 2-for-4 with a triple, a double, three RBI and two runs scored in Sunday's win over Pittsburgh.
One day after sitting out against left-hander Francisco Liriano, Smith was back in the third spot in the order and came up huge for the Padres. Smith is now slashing .291/.386/.508 this season.
Sat Aug 9 201415:54Smith out of lineup Saturday against Pirates
Smith is out of the lineup Saturday against the Pirates.
This is nothing out of the ordinary, as Smith typically sits against lefties and Francisco Liriano is on the hill for Pittsburgh. Yangervis Solarte will draw the start in left field, with Tommy Medica occupying the No. 3 spot in the order.
Fri Aug 1 201418:02Smith out of Padres' lineup Friday against Braves
Smith is out of the Padres' lineup Friday against the Braves.
Yangervis Solarte will make his first career start in left field, as Smith sits against lefty Mike Minor. Smith has posted strong numbers overall this season but has logged just 32 at-bats against southpaws this season, and his expose to them will likely remain limited.

Smith put up an RBI double and a run scored in four at-bats during Wednesday's bashing of the Cardinals.
Smith has been raking since the All-Star break, slashing .378/.425/.514 with one homer, five RBI, six runs and a 3:7 BB:K in 37 at-bats. However, even though Carlos Quentin (knee) resides on the DL and Cameron Maybin is serving a 25-game suspension, Smith hasn't garnered a start against a lefty during that stretch, which is equivalent to three absences in 12 contests. No matter, Smith is perhaps the steadiest bat in the Padres' lineup, ensuring his viability in a wide variety of formats.
Thu Jul 24 201423:51Smith adds three more hits in Padres rout
Seth Smith logged three hits in four trips to the plate in Thursday's routing of the Cubs.
Smith singled and scored in the first, doubled and was stranded in the third, then singled in a run in the sixth and later came around to score on another single. With the Padres up by a substantial amount in the seventh, journeyman Jeff Francoeur pinch-hit for Smith with lefty reliever James Russell on the hill. Smith continues to enjoy a breakout season, slashing .293/.390/.514 with 11 home runs and 31 RBI.

Sun Jul 20 201419:57Smith helps Pads walk off with infield single
Seth Smith helped the Padres walk off 2-1 winners over the Mets on Sunday, singling up the middle to pitcher Josh Edgin in the ninth inning.
Edgin stumbled coming off of the mound, which allowed Smith to reach safely with two outs as the winning run crossed the plate. It was one of Smith's three hits in five plate appearances on the afternoon. Smith's stats remain superb, as he has a .284/.384/.509 slash line with 11 home runs and 29 RBI.

Wed Jul 2 201414:07Padres ink Smith to two-year extension
Padres signed OF Seth Smith to a two-year, $13 million contract extension.
The deal also includes a club option for 2017. The Padres raised some eyebrows over the offseason when they traded Luke Gregerson for Smith, but the outfielder has been the team's best hitter with a .281/.384/.506 batting line and nine homers over 72 games. They'd probably be better of trading him than extending him, but at least the extension didn't cost them too much.

Wed Jul 2 201401:15Smith has three hits -- including HR -- in W
Seth Smith singled, doubled, homered, walked and scored three runs in the Padres' 8-2 blowout win over the Reds on Tuesday.
Josh Byrnes made some mistakes, but trading for Seth Smith was not one of them. Chopping wood amidst the driftwood that comprises San Diego's offense, Smith has hit .281/.384/.506 with nine homers. He'd have way more than 25 RBI if he didn't have to bat leadoff -- or, you know, play for the Padres.

Sat Jun 21 201401:37Seth Smith homers twice in Padres' win
Seth Smith homered twice, doubled and walked Friday in the Padres' 6-5 win over the Dodgers.
Smith didn't miss a third homer by much, settling instead for the double. In the ninth, he was on deck when Everth Cabrera delivered a game-winning sac fly off Kenley Jansen, concluding a three-run rally. Smith entered the night with a .188 average, no homers and one RBI in 48 at-bats this month. Still, he's been an excellent player this season, especially at home. He's hitting .354 with 11 doubles, four triples and five homers at Petco, compared to .198 with five doubles, no triples and two homers on the road.

Fri May 23 201401:16Smith stays on fire, clubs 6th homer of year
Seth Smith smacked his sixth home run and third in five games during Thursday's loss to the Cubs.
It's terrifying to think what San Diego's offense would be without Smith. He's hit safely in 14 of 18 May games and had a 1.372 OPS this month entering play on Thursday. Smith is second in the National League with a .338 average and second with a .615. The veteran has gotten a little lucky with success on balls put in play, but that doesn't mean he shouldn't be owned across formats right now.

Sun May 18 201420:07Smith remains hot, homers in loss to Rockies
Seth Smith went 1-for-3 with two walks and a solo home run in Sunday's loss to the Rockies.
Smith has been on fire this season. His first-inning home run off of Juan Nicasio is his fifth of the season and now gives him 17 RBI with a .333/.434/.608 slash line. Smith has hit safely in 12 of 15 May games. He appears on his way to a career year if he can keep it up.

Sun May 11 201400:37Seth Smith homers, triples, doubles in win
Seth Smith missed the cycle by a single and drove in four Saturday as the Padres topped the Marlins 9-3.
Smith also had a walk to go along with his homer, triple and double. He struggled for most of April after homering the first two days of the season, but he's gone 15-for-27 with 10 extra-base hits in his last seven games to take his OPS from .723 to .994. Whereas he seemed like a prime candidate to lose at-bats to Carlos Quentin, there's no longer much chance of that happening, even if it will leave the Padres with a pretty awful defensive outfield.

Sun May 4 201400:01Seth Smith goes 3-for-4 against Arizona
Seth Smith went 3-for-4 with two doubles versus the Diamondbacks on Saturday.
Smith was on pace to be the NL MVP two games into the season, but he hasn't homered in 23 games since and he hadn't had a hit of any kind since April 24 before the nice game tonight. He'll lose even more playing time following Carlos Quentin's return.

Thu May 1 201407:00Seth Smith goes 0-for-4 in return to action
Seth Smith (groin) went 0-for-4 in his return to the Padres' starting lineup on Wednesday.
It was Smith's first start in close to a week because of a mild groin strain. The 31-year-old is hitting .257/.361/.400 with two homers and seven RBI in 23 games.
