Tue Apr 29 201423:59Seth Smith (groin) could return Wednesday
Seth Smith (groin) could return to the Padres' lineup Wednesday.
Smith hasn't played since exiting last Thursday's game with a right groin strain, but he took batting practice again on Tuesday and was available off the bench. "That's not out of the question," manager Bud Black said of Smith returning Wednesday. "All that depends on how he does today in the pregame when he ramps up the intensity of his running out here. I'll have a better idea once this game unfolds, how he feels."

Thu Apr 24 201423:10Seth Smith exits with right groin strain
Seth Smith left Thursday's game versus the Nationals with a right groin strain.
Smith looked a little gimpy while running out a groundout in the 11th inning. The injury forced the Padres to briefly use Andrew Cashner in left field. Smith will likely be re-evaluated on Friday before the Padres determine how much time he might miss.

Tue Apr 1 201422:26Smith homers for second straight game Tuesday
Seth Smith hit his second home run in as many games during Tuesday's loss to the Dodgers.
Smith did his damage in a pinch-hit appearance on Sunday, and Tuesday he took Zack Greinke deep while starting in left field. He also singled in the game. It's not likely that Smith will hit 162 home runs this year, but he's always had power. It's a crowded outfield in San Diego when healthy, but Smith should continue to get playing time while the team fares without Carlos Quentin and Cameron Maybin.

Sun Mar 30 201423:06Seth Smith homers in victory over Dodgers
Seth Smith blasted a game-tying, pinch-hit home run in the eighth inning on Sunday, propelling the Padres to a 3-1 victory over the Dodgers in the season opener.
Smith came on to lead off the eighth inning, and launched the third pitch he saw from Brian Wilson over the boards to tie the game at 1-1. He's expected to see regular playing time in the Padres outfield against right-handed pitching this season, and could be worthy of mixed league consideration.

Seth Smith was scratched from Saturday's Cactus League contest due to illness.
Kyle Blanks will replace him in left field the Padres lineup. Smith should be fine to return to the lineup in the next day or two.

Sun Feb 16 201422:33Seth Smith could play regularly vs. rightys
Corey Brock of MLB.com believes that Seth Smith will see considerable playing time against right-handed pitching in 2014.
The Padres enter the spring with a highly crowded outfield situation, with Will Venable, Cameron Maybin, Carlos Quentin and Chris Denorifa also battling for playing time. Smith has proven to be successful in a platoon role before though, and is surely worthy of a gamble in the later rounds of NL-only leagues.

Tue Jan 14 201415:02Padres, Seth Smith avoid arb. with 1-yr deal
Padres and OF Seth Smith avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $4.5 million contract.
CBS Sports' Jon Heyman passed along the contract terms. Smith, who was arbitration-eligible for the final time this winter, earned $3,675,000 with the A's last season while batting .253/.329/.391 with eight home runs and 40 RBI in 117 games. Acquired in December for Luke Gregerson, the 31-year-old is slated to be a fourth outfielder for the Padres in 2014.

Tue Dec 3 201316:35Padres get Seth Smith from A's for Gregerson
Padres acquired OF Seth Smith from the Athletics for RHP Luke Gregerson.
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal was the first to report word of the swap. Smith, 31, batted .253/.329/.391 with eight home runs and 40 RBI in 117 games this past season for Oakland. He's the owner of a respectable .798 career OPS and should give San Diego some much-needed offense. Gregerson is a setup man with a 2.88 career ERA. He'll be pitching in front of new A's closer Jim Johnson in 2014.

Seth Smith is in the Athletics starting lineup for Game 2 of the ALDS on Saturday, hitting sixth and serving as the DH.
Aside from Smith replacing Daric Barton in the lineup, there are no other changes from Game 1 except in the batting order. A's skipper Bob Melvin will roll with Coco Crisp, Jed Lowrie, Josh Donaldson, Brandon Moss, Yoenis Cespedes, Smith, Josh Reddick, Stephen Vogt and Eric Sogard against Justin Verlander.

Sun Sep 29 201321:46Seth Smith has three hits as A's top Mariners
Seth Smith had a nice night at the dish in Sunday's 9-0 rout of the Mariners, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI.
Smith doubled home Chris Young as the A's broke through for four runs against starter Erasmo Ramirez in the second inning. He, like so many other players, has performed well in a platoon role with the A's this season, hitting .253/.329/.391 with eight homers and 40 RBI in 368 at-bats.

Sun Sep 8 201320:34Seth Smith's three-run bomb caps 7-run third
Seth Smith blasted a three-run homer, capping a seven-run uprising in the third inning on Sunday and powering the Athletics to a 7-2 victory over the Astros.
The towering drive to right came courtesy of Lucas Harrell, and was his only hit in two at-bats in the game. The 30-year-old outfielder is hitting .241/.317/.375 with eight homers and 37 RBI on the season, but should be limited to an AL-only play due to his sporadic playing time.

Fri Aug 23 201314:22Seth Smith back in lineup Friday
Seth Smith (eye) is back in the Athletics' lineup Friday.

Wed Aug 21 201314:17Seth Smith unavailable with astigmatism
Seth Smith hasn't been available the past two days because of an eye astigmatism.
Athletics manager Bob Melvin told Jane Lee of MLB.com that he's hopeful Smith will be able to return Friday, so it doesn't sound like a major concern. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Tue Jul 23 201300:42Seth Smith goes hitless
Seth Smith went 0-for-4 as Oakland's No. 9 hitter on Monday, leaving him 4-for-38 with no RBI this month.
By month, Smith has posted OPSss of .933, .709, .694 and now .260. He'll probably do a lot more sitting if the A's can get Yoenis Cespedes back healthy.

Thu Jun 13 201301:39Seth Smith reaches five times
Seth Smith reached base all five times he was up Wednesday, going 1-for-1 with four walks.
That's a fun line. Smith is the first player to go 1-for-1 with 4 BB since Adam Dunn did it on May 19, 2012. Matt Wieters, Matt Kemp and Jose Bautista all did it in 2011.

Tue May 21 201300:21Seth Smith homers, scores three times
Seth Smith went 2-for-4 with a homer, two walks and three runs scored versus the Rangers on Monday.
The A's are hoping Smith's slump is over. His OPS dropped from 1.072 on April 23 to .933 on April 30 to .755 on May 17, but he's now gone 4-for-8 in his last two games. Of course, it was in late April and early May that the A's really needed him. Now that Yoenis Cespedes, Coco Crisp and Chris Young are healthy again, Smith isn't so important to the attack anymore.

Wed May 8 201321:55Seth Smith picks up a pair of hits
Seth Smith went 2-for-5 with a run scored in Wednesday's loss to the Indians.
Smith singled and scored in the fourth and added another single in the eighth. He had a chance to come up with a big hit in the ninth but grounded out weakly to the pitcher with the bases loaded. Of course, the A's shouldn't have had to rely on Smith to extend the game. Adam Rosales hit a drive in the ninth inning that clearly hit the railing above the wall in left field, but the Angel Hernandez-led umpire crew failed to reverse their call of a double.

Sat May 4 201316:47Seth Smith has two hits in loss to Yankees
Seth Smith had a nice day at the plate in Saturday's loss to the Yankees, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
It was a nice bounceback effort from the veteran outfielder, who had been 0-for-10 with eight strikeouts over his previous two games. He's now hitting .295/.380/.474 with three homers and 17 RBI on the season. With Chris Young hitting the disabled list on Saturday, Smith should see increased playing time in the coming weeks and is worthy of an add as a fourth or fifth outfielder in mixed leagues.

Tue Apr 23 201322:20Smith drives in three as A's crush Red Sox
Seth Smith went 1-for-4 with a home run and three RBI as the A's beat the Red Sox on Tuesday.
Smith had just one of Oakland's 13 hits, but he made his one hit count. The A's have a wealth of outfielders, but Smith seems to have earned his place in the lineup even when Yoenis Cespedes returns. Smith is now hitting .377 with two home runs and 10 RBI this season.

Fri Apr 12 201301:17Smith has four-hit night in win over Angels
Seth Smith went 4-for-5 with an RBI double and a run scored in a win over the Angels on Thursday.
Smith actually had two doubles on the night. He's now hitting an even .500 (11-for-22) with one homer and six doubles on the year. It might be a challenge for him to get steady at-bats due to the presence of Chris Young, so he's more of an AL-only option.
