Sat Apr 11 201513:12Seth Smith: (Groin) Back In The Lineup
Smith (groin) is back in the lineup Saturday against the A's.
Groin tightness cost Smith a start against a right-hander earlier in the week, but he will DH and bat second Saturday against right-hander Sonny Gray. The fact that he's not back in right field would seem to suggest he may not be completely over the issue, but it does not appear he's in danger of missing additional time as a result of the injury.

Manager Lloyd McClendon indicated Friday that Smith (groin) is feeling better and could be in the lineup Saturday against the Athletics, Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News-Tribune reports.
Smith suffered the groin issue during Monday's regular season opener, but appears to be nearing a return. While it sounds as though Saturday is the target date at this point, an update should be provided at some point prior to the game.
Fri Apr 10 201518:11Smith (groin) remains out of lineup Friday against A's
Smith (groin) remains out of the lineup Friday against the A's.
Smith has been nursing some groin tightness this week, but he would have sat Friday anyway with a left-hander (Drew Pomeranz) due up for Oakland. If Smith isn't back in there Saturday to take on right-hander Sonny Gray, it will be cause for concern.
Wed Apr 8 201518:32Seth Smith: Out With Groin Tightness
Smith is out of the lineup Wednesday due to groin tightness, MLB.com's Greg Johns reports.
There was a mild riot on Twitter when it was announced that Smith was out of the lineup with a righty on the mound, and now we know why. Apparently Smith wasn't available Tuesday night either, but since a lefty was pitching nothing was made of it. He should be considered day-to-day, and his next chance to get in the lineup against a righty would be Saturday in Oakland against Sonny Gray. Rickie Weeks got the start in his place Wednesday.

Smith is out of the lineup Wednesday despite a right-handed pitcher being on the mound for the Angels, the Seattle Times' Ryan Divish reports.
Rickie Weeks remains in the lineup at DH despite Matt Shoemaker, a righty, being on the round. The Mariners beat writers were unable to guess as to why Smith was not in the lineup, as the assumption was that he would sit against lefites and play against righties, so check back later on Wednesday for a reason. For now, make sure he's not in your daily lineups.
Tue Apr 7 201518:37Smith out of lineup Tuesday
Smith is out of the lineup Tuesday.
With a lefty on the mound, Smith and Dustin Ackley head to the bench while Rickie Weeks and Justin Ruggiano join the fray. This should be the expected strict platoon going forward, which will limit Smith's value, especially in weekly leagues.

Smith doubled twice and tripled with two RBI in his Mariners debut Monday in a season-opening win against the Angels.
As expected, Smith saw plenty to hit batting second in front of Robinson Cano. Smith needs to play a big part if the Mariners are to contend this year. So far, so good. He likely will sit Tuesday in favor of Justin Ruggiano as the Mariners face a lefty.
Wed Apr 1 201512:58Smith (ankle) will return to lineup for Wednesday's spring train...
Smith (ankle) will return to the lineup for Wednesday's spring training game, Bob Dutton of The Tacoma News Tribune reports.
Smith rolled his ankle prior to Sunday's contest, causing him to be scratched and to sit a few days. The injury wasn't considered serious, and his presence in the lineup should alleviate any worries on that front.

Mariners manager Lloyd McLendon said the team is not worried about Smith's ankle injury, Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune reports.
Smith didn't play in games Monday or Tuesday, but it sounds as if he'll return by the end of the week. He still figures to open the season as Seattle's regular right fielder against right-handed pitching, with Justin Ruggiano likely to get most of the at-bats against southpaws.
Sun Mar 29 201514:32Smith scratched from Sunday's lineup because of rolled ankle
Smith was scratched from Sunday's lineup because of a rolled ankle, but it's not considered serious, Shannon Drayer of ESPN Radio 710 AM reports.
Smith's injury shouldn't hold him out for an extended period of time, but he could sit for a day or two to ensure it doesn't carry over into the regular season.

Smith and platoon mate Justin Ruggiano are tentatively penciled in as the Mariners' No. 2 hitters this season, the Tacoma News Tribune reports.
Last season, Smith carried a .367 OBP for the Padres over 136 games, and the platoon could prove to be a very effective duo for the Mariners. On the larger side of the split, Smith could see a steady number of runs scored if manager Lloyd McClendon follows through on his plans to hit Smith and Ruggiano ahead of Robinson Cano, Nelson Cruz, and Kyle Seager.

Smith was traded to the Mariners in exchange for Brandon Maurer on Tuesday, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN reports.
Smith became expendable this offseason after a string of trades brought Matt Kemp, Justin Upton and Wil Myers to San Diego. After losing Melky Cabrera to the White Sox, Seattle is in need of another outfielder, and Smith figures to compete for time in right field along with Justin Ruggiano. The 32-year-old Smith hit .266/.367/.440 last season to go with 48 RBI, 12 home runs and 87 strikeouts in 443 at-bats.
Sat Sep 27 201403:56Smith 2-4 with run scored and one RBI against Giants on Friday
Smith went 2-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI against the Giants on Friday.
It was a tale of two halves for Smith, where he hit well before the All-Star break with a .283 AVG, 10 HR, 37 R, and 27 RBI, while really struggling after the break only hitting two homers to go along with a .236 average. Plus, Smith didn't get the everyday at-bats he did earlier in the year.
Wed Sep 24 201417:33Smith out of Padres' lineup again Wednesday
Smith is out of the Padres' lineup again Wednesday.
The Rockies are trotting out yet another left-hander in Yohan Flande, so Smith will sit for a third straight day. Fortunately for Smith, the Giants have three straight right-handers lined up to start the final series of the season, so he should be plenty active this weekend.
Tue Sep 23 201419:01Smith out of lineup Tuesday
Smith is out of the lineup Tuesday.
The Padres will let Tommy Medica and Rymer Liriano patrol the outfield corners for the second day in a row, and it seems Smith could be a part-time player over the season's final days.
Mon Sep 22 201418:18Smith out of lineup Monday against Rockies
Smith is out of the lineup Monday against the Rockies.
With the Rockies bringing lefty Tyler Matzek to the mound Monday, Smith will give way to Tommy Medica in left field. Thanks to manager Bud Black's favorable usage of him, Smith has managed to maintain a useful .266/.370/.444 line over his 428 at-bats this season.
Thu Sep 18 201417:30Smith (hamstring) in lineup Thursday against Phillies
Smith (hamstring) is in the lineup Thursday against the Phillies, MLB.com reports.
Smith was held out of the lineup the last two days due to a hamstring tweak, but he still managed to make pinch-hitting appearances in each of the two games. He's now been deemed fit to return to duties in left field.
Tue Sep 16 201419:30Seth Smith: To Miss Two Days After Tweaking Hamstring
Smith is a late scratch from Tuesday's lineup, and will also miss Wednesday's game after tweaking his hamstring, the Union-Tribune's Jeff Sanders reports.
While he could be available to pinch hit, the Padres are going to keep him out of the lineup for a couple days just to play it safe. It is not known who will replace him in right field, but Smith could be able to return to the lineup Thursday.
Fri Sep 12 201419:00Smith out of lineup Friday against Diamondbacks
Smith is out of the lineup Friday against the Diamondbacks, Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Smith has been receiving a day off after every two starts recently, and will do so again Friday. He has been on a rough stretch at the plate over the past four games as well, collecting just one hit in his last 17 at-bats. Cory Spangenberg gets the start in left field Friday and will bat second for the Padres.
Fri Sep 5 201417:16Smith out of lineup Friday
Smith is out of the lineup Friday, Nick Groke of the Denver Post reports.
Nobody, not even Smith, is truly getting everyday at-bats at this point in the season for the Padres. This is his third day off over the last six games despite being the team's best offensive player this season. Abraham Almonte will start in left field Friday.
