RHP Trevor Rosenthal became the fifth reliever in club history to notch 100 career saves with a dominant ninth inning Wednesday, striking out the side on 12 pitches. Chicago hitters flailed to no avail against his fastball and changeup as Rosenthal fanned the side in a save for the seventh time in his career.
Thu Apr 21 201600:33Cardinals closer Rosenthal reaches milestone
ST. LOUIS -- It doesn't seem like closer Trevor Rosenthal has been around long enough to start reaching milestones.Yet there he was, earning his 100th career save Wednesday by striking out the side in the ninth inning to wrap up a 5-3 win over the Chicago Cubs. That makes him the fifth pitcher in franchise history to reach that milestone, joining the likes of Jason Isringhausen, Lee Smith, Todd Worrell and Bruce Sutter."I didn't know that anybody had any idea of it," Rosenthal said when asked about reaching 100. "It makes it a little extra special for me, and I appreciate everyone coming together and celebrating it."Rosenthal didn't become a closer until the final week of the 2013 season when it was obvious that Edward Mujica had run out of gas. Rosenthal fought control trouble in 2014, blew away hitters last year for a club-record 48 saves and looks ready to notch another 40 or more saves this season. At one time, there was talk that Rosenthal wanted to try his hand as a starter, as he did for 48 of his 66 minor-league games. But that seems to have quieted down in the same way that he puts opponents to sleep in the ninth inning.

RHP Trevor Rosenthal rarely gives up homers, but he coughed one up in the ninth to Domingo Santana that cost the Cardinals the game on Wednesday. It was only the 12th long ball he has permitting in three-plus seasons as a big leaguer, evidence of how hard he is to time up. Rosenthal's command betrayed him in this one, as he went to full counts on the first three men and walked Kirk Nieuwenhuis before Santana's blast.

RHP Trevor Rosenthal refined his control and became a lockdown closer last year, setting a team record with 48 saves in 51 chances. By going to the stretch position at all times, Rosenthal reduced the moving parts in his delivery and became a reliable strike-thrower, getting ahead with fastballs and then putting them away with a slider or changeup.

RHP Trevor Rosenthal avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $5.6 million contact on Friday. Rosenthal set a franchise-record with 48 saves last season while earning $535,000.

Rosenthal secured his 48th save in Monday's 3-0 victory over the Pirates, giving up one hit while walking and striking out a batter apiece in a scoreless inning.
Rosenthal's save wasn't without its share of tension, as the closer began the frame by walking Andrew McCutchen and giving up a single to Starling Marte. The 25-year-old would settle down, however, retiring each of the next three batters to end the game. Rosenthal appears to be back on track following a disastrous four-run outing against the Brewers this past weekend.

Rosenthal (2-4) took his second loss of the series Sunday against Milwaukee after blowing the save in the top of the ninth, allowing four runs on a walk and two hits without recording an out.
Rosenthal loaded the bases immediately after entering in the top of the ninth before Jason Rogers delivered a pinch-hit grand slam to chase Rosenthal from the game. It was a rough weekend for Rosenthal as he saw his ERA rise from 1.49 to 2.13 on the season.

Rosenthal (2-3) took the loss Friday in a bullpen game, allowing one run on three hits across one innings in a 4-3 loss to the Brewers.
Rosenthal came on in a tied game in the ninth and allowed three of his first four batters to single on him and than got a double-play to limit the jam. His 1.60 ERA seemed impossible to sustain, considering his xFIP is at 3.03. In any case, he is still one of the best closers in the league, saving 47-of-49 save opportunities this season.

Rosenthal recorded his 47th save of the season by pitching a scoreless ninth, striking out one and allowing two singles.
Rosenthal is now tied for the Cardinals' all-time single-season record in saves. He'll have 12 more games to find another and move the top spot alone, he's a good bet to crack 50 saves in just his second full season as the Cardinals' closer.

Rosenthal picked up his 44th save of the season Tuesday in the win over Milwaukee, allowing a hit and striking out a pair.
Rosenthal now has 44 saves on the season, the fifth highest total in Cardinals' history, needing four more over the final few weeks to grab the top spot. His secondary numbers (252 ERA+) all support that his 2015 season has likely been the best of any closer in Cardinals' history. Rosenthal is just 25 years old.

Rosenthal struck out one batter in a perfect ninth inning en route to his 43rd save in a 4-3 win over the Cubs on Wednesday.
The amazing season continues for Rosenthal as he is now tied for the league lead in saves with division rival Mark Melancon. With the high potency of saves and the elite peripherals, Rosenthal has put himself in elite status as arguably the most valuable closer in fantasy. He now has a 1.59 ERA and 73 strikeouts in 62.1 innings pitched this season. Rosenthal does have a 1.20 WHIP and his 3.28 xFIP would indicate some regression coming, but we're so deep into the season that he may just chalk this one up to some good fortune.

Rosenthal has been reinstated from the paternity list.
Rosenthal converted his 40th save of the season last Wednesday before going on paternity leave, and will now look to continue his dominance after a short break. The Cardinals optioned Sam Tuivailala to Triple-A Memphis in a corresponding move that opened up a 25-man roster spot.

Rosenthal earned his 40th save of the year in a 3-1 win against the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.
He struck out Paul Goldschmidt and David Peralta to begin the inning, but then walked Aaron Hill on four straight pitches to bring the tying run to the plate. The two out walk didn't harm Rosenthal, however, as he induced a line drive out from Jake Lamb to secure the victory for the Cardinals. With the save on Wednesday the 25-year-old is tied with Mark Melancon for the major league lead in saves once more and is clearly one of the best closers in the game.
Wed Aug 26 201522:36Trevor Rosenthal: (Paternity) Will Miss Weekend Series
Rosenthal will miss the Cardinals' three-game weekend series in San Francisco and instead return to St. Louis to witness the birth of his second daughter, MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch reports.
The Cardinals will likely place Rosenthal on the paternity list on Friday to open up a roster spot for another reliever during the weekend. Lefty Kevin Siegrist and righty Seth Maness, who have both already recorded five and three saves respectively this season, are the top choices to replace Rosenthal should a save chance arise.

Rosenthal escaped with his 39th save of the season Monday against Arizona, allowing a run on two hits while recording the final three outs.
It was the first run Rosenthal has allowed in the month of August so there's no need for concern. The righty sports a sparkling 1.57 ERA on the season and has easily been one of the best closers in baseball.
