Fri Sep 17 201012:15Karstens (shoulder) long-tosses Thursday
Jeff Karstens (shoulder) long-tossed from a distance of 75 feet on Thursday and "felt great."
Karstens hasn't made an appearance this month due to a sore shoulder. There's still a chance he'll pitch again this season, but only as a reliever.

Sun Sep 5 201011:02Karstens scratched, could be shut down
Jeff Karstens has been scratched from Monday's scheduled start due to shoulder pain.
He could be shut down for the year, and given how late we are in the season, that's probably the wise move. Brian Burres will fill in for Karstens on Monday.

Fri Aug 27 201017:45Karstens (back) throws bullpen session
Jeff Karstens (back) threw a successful bullpen session Friday.
Karstens was scratched from his scheduled start on Wednesday due to back spasms. He is currently in line to start next Tuesday against the Tuesday, though he obviously doesn't come as a recommended fantasy option.

Sun Aug 15 201018:06Karstens knocked around in loss to 'Stros
Jeff Karstens permitted five runs over 5 2/3 innings in Sunday's loss to the Astros.
The right-hander struck out five and didn't walk anyone, but he was undone by a four-run sixth in which he gave up three hits and hit a batter. Two of the runs came home after Karstens exited. Karstens has actually pitched pretty well since joining the team's rotation, as he's allowed three runs or fewer in nine of 13 starts, but he somehow has only one win over that stretch. He'll face the Mets Friday.
Mon Jul 19 201022:49Karstens takes loss vs. Brewers
Jeff Karstens gave up three runs over six innings in a loss to the Brewers on Monday night.
Karstens retired the first 12 batters he faced, but served up a solo home run to Prince Fielder in the fourth and a go-ahead two-run shot to Rickie Weeks in the fifth. He has now given up an obscene 17 homers in 82 2/3 innings. On the bright side, he managed a season-high six strikeouts and no walks on Monday, a nice change of pace from his six free passes in his last start against the Brewers on July 10. All in all, it wasn't a bad start -- especially considering the rain delay -- but it's awful tough to recommend him as a fantasy option, even in the deepest of NL-only formats.
Sat Jul 10 201010:10Karstens has mishap in weight room
Jeff Karstens suffered a "significant" gash on his head as a result of a weightlifting accident on Thursday.
The incident, which Karstens described as "a little scary," will not prevent the right-hander from making his scheduled start Saturday against the Brewers. Karstens was knocked around in his last start but pitched pretty well in June.

Tue Jun 1 201021:44Karstens holds Cubs to 2 runs over 6 innings
Jeff Karstens held the Cubs to two runs over six innings but took a no-decision in Tuesday's 3-2 victory.
He surrendered three walks and struck out three while scattering six hits. He left with a 2-1 deficit, but Pittsburgh tacked on two runs against Ted Lilly in the eighth to take Karstens off the hook. Karstens isn't fantasy relevant at this time outside of deep NL-only leagues.
Sun May 9 201012:20Pirates move Karstens to bullpen
The Pirates are going to move Jeff Karstens to their bullpen, according to The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Dejan Kovacevic.
Brian Burres gets the start in his place on Friday in Chicago. Kovacevic indicated that Ross Ohlendorf's return and the off-day coming up both played into the decision, so perhaps this isn't a long-term move.

Sat May 8 201021:55Karstens gets first win with six strong
Jeff Karstens picked up his first win of the season Saturday with six shutout innings in a 2-0 victory over the Cardinals.
Karstens entered the game with an 0-1 record, 6.17 ERA and a 1.89 WHIP through two starts, and yet the National League Central division-leading Cardinals couldn't touch him. He racked up four strikeouts and allowed only three hits. Don't expect the same success next week against the Cubs.
Tue Apr 27 201009:09Pirates recall Jeff Karstens from AAA Indy
Pirates recalled RHP Jeff Karstens from Triple-A Indianapolis.
Karstens was 1-2 with a 7.31 ERA in five appearances for Indy before the call-up and shouldn't be expected to fare much better in the show. The 27-year-old could be in line for a start this week, but should be avoided in fantasy leagues. He had a 5.42 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in 39 appearances last year.
