The right-hander struck out five and didn't walk anyone, but he was undone by a four-run sixth in which he gave up three hits and hit a batter. Two of the runs came home after Karstens exited. Karstens has actually pitched pretty well since joining the team's rotation, as he's allowed three runs or fewer in nine of 13 starts, but he somehow has only one win over that stretch. Karstens retired the first 12 batters he faced, but served up a solo home run to Prince Fielder in the fourth and a go-ahead two-run shot to Rickie Weeks in the fifth. He has now given up an obscene 17 homers in 82 2/3 innings. On the bright side, he managed a season-high six strikeouts and no walks on Monday, a nice change of pace from his six free passes in his last start against the Brewers on July 10. All in all, it wasn't a bad start -- especially considering the rain delay -- but it's awful tough to recommend him as a fantasy option, even in the deepest of NL-only formats. | ||||||

Karstens entered the game with an 0-1 record, 6.17 ERA and a 1.89 WHIP through two starts, and yet the National League Central division-leading Cardinals couldn't touch him. He racked up four strikeouts and allowed only three hits. Don't expect the same success next week against the Cubs. | ||||||
