Sun Mar 17 201318:16'Unclear' if Broncos/Dumervil want new deal
The Denver Post reports it's "unclear" if the Broncos and free agent DE Elvis Dumervil are interested in a new deal.
Beat writer Mike Klis believes the sides could reach a new accord by agreeing to a 4-5 year pact that sticks a good chunk of Dumervil's 2013 salary into a signing bonus. There are other veteran options on the market, but the Broncos can't afford to come away without one. They currently have a big hole at right end.

Sun Mar 17 201316:43Report: Steelers interested in Elvis Dumervil
The Baltimore Sun reports the Steelers are interested in free agent DE Elvis Dumervil.
Reporter Aaron Wilson considers the Steelers a team to "keep an eye on." Dumervil has now been connected to the Steelers and Ravens since Friday's contract fiasco, and expressed an interest in playing for the Dolphins. If the price is right, he'd restore the pass-rushing heat Pittsburgh lost when it cut James Harrison.

Sat Mar 16 201317:33Dumervil's agent waives 5-day waiting period
Free agent Elvis Dumervil's fired player rep, Marty Magid, has agreed to waive Dumervil's five-day waiting period to hire a new agent.
It's the least Magid could do after sabotaging his client's best interest. Dumervil is now eligible to hire another agent immediately, which in turn would allow Dumervil to sign with a team. The Ravens want to bring him in for a visit.

Sat Mar 16 201314:24Free agent Elvis Dumervil interested in Fins
Free agent DE Elvis Dumervil is interested in joining the Dolphins.
Dumervil is a Miami native, but the Dolphins haven't called his agent and may not be interested. Dumervil's rep says "multiple teams" have called regarding his client, but NFL Network's Michelle Beisner says Dumervil isn't drawing much buzz. The Broncos appear to be moving on from Dumervil for the moment to see what else is out there.

Sat Mar 16 201310:42DeMaurice Smith asks for Dumervil inquiry
DeMaurice Smith, executive director of the NFL Players Association, has asked for an inquiry into the contract snafu that led the Broncos to release DE Elvis Dumervil.
The Broncos released Dumervil on Friday because paperwork of his revised contract that included a 2013 salary cut from $12 million to $8 million was not filed by the 4:00ET deadline. Denver asked the league office if it would honor the verbal agreement on a restructured contract the team negotiated with Dumervil, but the league rejected the request.

Fri Mar 15 201318:16Dumervil's rep blaming DEN for fax fiasco
According to USA Today, free agent Elvis Dumervil's player rep is blaming the Broncos for Friday's contract debacle.
As ESPN's Andrew Brandt would say, "there will be lawyers." Dumervil's rep is alleging the Broncos changed the terms of the sides' agreement at the last minute, delaying the process. Dumervil's camp reportedly sent its ill-fated fax at 3:55ET, right as the Broncos were cutting him out of a supposed abundance of caution. The sides have yet to talk since the fiasco. We'd expect many twists and turns over the next 48 hours.

Fri Mar 15 201316:13Contract not filed in time: Dumervil released
The Broncos did not file RE Elvis Dumervil's new contract in time, and he has been released.
Denver had until 4PM ET to submit the new deal to the league office, but they simply didn't get it in before the deadline because Dumervil didn't get his signature on the document until 4:07PM. The two sides had agreed to slash Dumervil's salary from $12 million to $8 million, so there is an agreement. We tentatively expect Dumervil to re-up with the Broncos, but he's now open to see what else is out on the market. It's doubtful Dumervil would find $8 million anywhere else, considering what Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett have signed for in recent days.

Fri Mar 15 201315:34Elvis Dumervil caves, remaining in Denver
Broncos RE Elvis Dumervil has agreed to cut his $12 million salary to $8 million, and will remain with the team for 2013.
Dumervil saw a market littered with underpaid pass rushers, and wisely realized it was his only real option. Reports had suggested he'd have to take a much bigger reduction, so $8 million is actually a win. Dumervil almost certainly would have brought home less in free agency. Dumervil can still get after the quarterback - he notched 11 sacks in 2012 - but is a liability against the run, and was penalized eight times last season. His new salary is more in line with what he brings to the table at this stage of his career.

Thu Mar 14 201321:38Broncos will not back down vs. Elvis Dumervil
VP of Football Operations John Elway confirmed Thursday that the Broncos will not back down from their pay-cut request of Elvis Dumervil.
Due $12 million, Dumervil has lost even more leverage after Cliff Avril accepted a deal worth $7.5 million annually and Michael Bennett only got $5 million. "I hate having to do it, in the position I'm in," Elway said. "But I've got to do what's best for this football team ... Especially when you look at the market and what's out there now. (The salary) is so far out of whack. Hopefully, he realizes that." The Broncos have Dwight Freeney in their back pocket and the market working in their favor. We're betting Dumervil will cave.

Wed Mar 13 201320:25Dumervil decision likely to come on Friday
The Denver Post reports a decision from the Broncos on RE Elvis Dumervil likely won't come until Friday.
Dumervil's $12 million salary becomes guaranteed if he is on the roster Saturday, so Friday will be the latest we hear something. Initially, Dumervil was reluctant to take a pay cut, but he has since changed his stance. It may have been too late. The Broncos are short on cash, and could replace him with a cheaper option like free agent Dwight Freeney.

Tue Mar 12 201317:45Elvis Dumervil now open to pay-cut
Broncos RE Elvis Dumervil is now willing to take a pay-cut.
Dumervil's agent surveyed the market and didn't like what he saw. Dumervil will still have to be amenable to a major reduction in his $12 million salary to have any chance of remaining in Denver. It's more likely than not he ends up a free agent.

Tue Mar 12 201312:28Broncos hanging onto Elvis Dumervil
The Broncos are not expected to release Elvis Dumervil until they have secured his replacement.
The replacement is tentatively expected to be free agent Dwight Freeney. Dumervil's $12 million base salary becomes guaranteed if he's on the roster by Saturday. Dumervil is begging the Broncos to cut him today so he can test the market. Unfortunately for Dumervil and his agents, the club holds all of the cards.

Mon Mar 11 201319:40Broncos RE Dumervil requests his release
Broncos RE Elvis Dumervil has requested his release after the sides got "no closer" to a resolution in their contract impasse on Monday.
"We're at an impasse," Dumervil's agent confirmed. "(Elvis) loves the Broncos. ... But if we can't reach common ground and you know as an organization that you're going to release him, then we'd like for them to release him by (Tuesday) and not wait another four days." The "another four days" is in reference to Dumervil's $12 million salary becoming fully guaranteed on Saturday. The Broncos are insisting on a pay-cut, while Dumervil is only willing to restructure. He's likely played his final down in Denver.

Sun Mar 10 201317:19Broncos reach impasse in talks with Dumervil
The Denver Post reports contract restructuring talks between the Broncos and RE Elvis Dumervil appear to have reached an impasse.
The exact same term -- "impasse" -- was used in Pittsburgh to describe James Harrison's negotiations before the Steelers cut him. Agent Marty Magid sent the Broncos a contract proposal on Friday, and the two sides have had "no communication" since. Denver may be preparing Dumervil's walking papers. "Elvis has been working out, he's healthy, he feels great," Magid said. "He wants to stay with the Broncos. Right now, we're waiting to hear back from them."

Fri Mar 8 201321:43Broncos continue to negotiate with Dumervil
The Broncos continued to negotiate with RE Elvis Dumervil on Friday in hopes of reworking Dumervil's $12 million base salary.
So far, Dumervil's camp has expressed openness to a restructured deal. They do not believe their client should have to take a pay cut, however. The sides must reach some finality by March 16, when Dumervil's salary would become fully guaranteed. Dumervil seems like a 50:50 bet to stay in Denver.

Thu Mar 7 201321:06Agent says Dumervil is open to restructure
Broncos RE Elvis Dumervil's agent says his client is open to restructuring his deal.
Dumervil is not open to a pay cut, though. "If we can meet on some common ground there's a potential we can get it done. If we can't, then they'll have to make a decision," said Dumervil's agent. "Elvis wants to return as a Bronco if it all possible, and that's what we're trying to do." Dumervil's $12 million salary becomes guaranteed on March 16, but Denver is likely to make a decision by the start of free agency on Tuesday.

Thu Mar 7 201320:38Dumervil resisting pay cut from Broncos
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport says RE Elvis Dumervil has "expressed resistance" to taking a pay cut.
Dumervil has a $13.623 million cap number for 2013, and the Broncos could save just under $9 million by cutting him loose. Dumervil has 63.5 sacks and 16 forced fumble in six seasons, but he's a one-trick pony as a pure pass-rusher. He has three years left on his deal, but Denver has a decision to make in the coming days as they try to create cap room.

Wed Mar 6 201312:56Broncos want Dumervil to take pay cut
Sources tell CBS4 that the Broncos want RE Elvis Dumervil to restructure his contract.
Dumervil is owed $12 million in 2013 and carries a $15.6 million cap hit. Although he had 11 sacks and six forced fumbles last season, he was atrocious against the run and committed eight penalties. ProFootballFocus has suggested that Dumervil was the most overpaid defender in football in 2012.
