Mychael Urban of CSNBayArea.com writes that Andres Torres (appendectomy) seemed to be swinging "awfully gingerly" in his first live batting practice session Thursday.

Torres reportedly took more swings from the left side than the right, but this was a huge first step for him. He hopes to return as soon as this weekend against the Rockies, but Giants manager Bruce Bochy is trying to prepare as if he won't be available.

"It depends how I feel," said Torres, who underwent an appendectomy less than two weeks ago. "We're working hard, but we have to wait to let this heal. Overall, Torres said he feels good, however he still feels some soreness at the incision point when he swings a bat. He could be back this weekend, but fantasy owners shouldn't count on it.

That's another way of saying he didn't feel all that comfortable. It's to be expected, considering that he underwent an emergency appendectomy a little over a week ago. Giants manager Bruce Bochy is working under the assumption that Torres won't be available for this week's series against the Rockies, but he wouldn't rule it out, either.

The outfielder underwent an emergency appendectomy a little over one week ago, yet he is already ramping up his rehab efforts and is optimistic for a quick return. Torres had an .822 OPS, 14 home runs and 23 stolen bases in 479 at-bats before going down and should be back in about five days.

In particular, he said that Torres said he wasn't sure he'd be back for the playoffs. This couples with some comments made by Hank Schulman at the same newspaper - that this is a tricky injury, that even the stated two-to-three weeks is a best-case scenario, and that Torres will have to wait for the sutures to heal - to make us think he'll be out for the year. It's safe to drop Torres in re-draft leagues if he's worried about making it back for the playoffs, in other words.

Torres has really been scuffling at the plate lately, so this isn't a huge blow to fantasy owners, but it's certainly notable nonetheless. Aaron Rowand is starting in center field Sunday and figures to be the primary beneficiary of more playing time, though Cody Ross should see an uptick in at-bats, as well.

Now Torres is driving in runs even while batting from the leadoff spot. He has 33 since the beginning of July after collecting all of 22 during the first three months.

Incredibly, Torres is up to 57 extra-base hits, which is tied for 11th in the majors. Unfortunately, since he's been batting leadoff for the most part, he has just 51 RBI. Since 2000, the smallest total of RBI for anyone with at least 60 extra-base hits was Jimmy Rollins in 2005. He had 61 extra-base hits and 54 RBI.

Andres Torres returned to action on Friday August 13.

Andres Torres is out of Thursday's lineup against the Cubs because of "tight legs."

Whatever they want to it, there is legitimate reason to be concerned. Torres has a significant injury history, including two stints on the disabled list last season due to hamstring pulls. Aubrey Huff will start in right field Thursday, while Aaron Rowand plays center and Pat Burrell starts in left.

After Jonathan Broxton struggled, the Dodgers brought in George Sherrill to face Torres with the bases-loaded in a 5-4 game. Torres doubled in two runs, and Buster Posey went on to add an insurance run with a single. Torres now has a remarkable 28 doubles in 285 at-bats this season. He had 12 doubles in 409 major league at-bats going into 2010.

Torres appeared as a defensive replacement on Thursday night, but hasn't started a game since last Friday against the Nationals due to a strained left groin.

The Giants hoped that Torres would be able to return to the starting lineup immediately after the All-Star break, but it looks like he needs another day. Bochy said that Torres is available off the bench.

He didn't, but just the fact he was available should give you an indication that his groin injury isn't too serious. We would expect him to sit again Sunday, but he should be cleared to start after the break.

"It might be a couple days," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "We'll hope for better news once we check on him tomorrow. It's going to be questionable." Torres is the hottest hitter in the lineup right now, but the Giants might as well shut him down right now in hopes that he'll be fully healed after the All-Star break.

Torres joins a small group of three batters that have gotten lucky off of the young ace, and it was his third in as many days. Power really isn't his game, though. On the other hand, his ability to get on base and play good defense have cemented him into the Giants' lineup. Fantasy owners needing some speed with a little bit of pop could do worse.
