Tue May 24 202223:57Yasmani Grandal Sluggish Through First 38 Games
Chicago White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal has had a poor start to the 2022 season, posting a .176/.273/.237 line across 38 games. In 131 at-bats, the two-time All-Star has just four extra-base hits (two doubles and two homers), five runs scored, and nine RBI. Advanced metrics suggest positive regression is on the horizon for the 33-year-old's batting average, with a .235 xBA. However, Grandal's .243 wOBA would be his lowest mark since 2017, hurting his value in OBP leagues. Given the position's lack of depth, fantasy managers should give Grandal a longer leash to see if he reverts to his steady self as June hits.

Fri Apr 22 202216:42Yasmani Grandal Getting A Breather On Friday
Chicago White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game against Bailey Ober and the Minnesota Twins. Reese McGuire is getting the start behind the plate for the game. This will be Grandal's third day-off of the year. He played in 10 of the team's first 12 games. Over those 10 games, he slashed .111/.154/.194 with one home run, four RBI and one run scored. The 33-year-old got off to a slow start last year as well, but wound up racking up 23 home runs and a career-best OBP of .420. Expect the veteran catcher to start coming around at the plate soon.

Thu Apr 14 202211:31Yasmani Grandal Getting The Day Off Thursday
Chicago White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal is taking the day off on Thursday. Grandal, who is just 3-for-15 with a home run and two RBI in his first four games of the season, will get his second day off of the year. Reese McGuire will handle the catching duties and hit seventh on Thursday against Seattle Mariners right-hander Logan Gilbert. McGuire has two singles in his first seven plate appearances of the season in his first year with Chicago, but he won't have much DFS upside at the bottom of the White Sox order against a good up-and-coming pitcher in Gilbert.

Wed Apr 6 202212:23Yasmani Grandal Set To Build On Career-Best .940 OPS
Chicago White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal enjoyed an enigmatic 2021 season in which he slashed .240/.420/.520 with 23 home runs, 60 runs, and 62 RBI in 375 plate appearances over 93 games. His counting stats could have been much gaudier if not for suffering a torn tendon in his knee early in July. Despite the setback, Grandal's OPS sat at a career-best .940, and he is once again poised to be among the top catching options, especially in points-based and sabermetrically-inclined leagues, where his walk rate catapults him up the rankings.

Thu Sep 16 202113:51Yasmani Grandal Isn't Starting On Thursday
Chicago White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal isn't in Thursday's lineup against the Los Angeles Angels and right-hander Alex Cobb. Grandal has been one of fantasy baseball's most productive catchers when healthy this season, especially in leagues where on-base percentage is part of the scoring. The veteran is batting .237 with a .416 on-base percentage and 20 home runs in 311 plate appearances. Zack Collins will start in Grandal's place at catcher and bat eighth against the Angels. Wed Sep 1 202109:05Yasmani Grandal Stays Hot With Another Home Run
Chicago White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal continues to swing a hot bat for the Pale Hose. The veteran has been on fire since returning from the injured list Friday and went 1-for-2 with two walks and a solo home run. Grandal really struggled offensively in the first half with a .188 batting average, but he has nine hits in 14 at-bats since returning with four home runs and 11 RBI. Managers should be adding Grandal everywhere in leagues that he was dropped in during his lengthy stint on the injured list. For the season, he is now hitting .210 with 18 home runs and 49 RBI.

Sun Aug 29 202119:56Yasmani Grandal Stays Hot On Sunday
Chicago White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal remained hot on Sunday afternoon in a blowout victory versus the Chicago Cubs. Grandal went 2-for-4 with a two-run blast and has now homered three times and driven in 10 runs since his return from the injured list on Friday. Grandal was struggling to hit the ball in the first half of the season, but has been on fire since returning and managers will welcome it. As part of one of the best lineups in the game, Grandal should have plenty of RBI opportunities moving forward. The veteran will be the White Sox starting catcher moving forward and is now hitting .203 with 16 home runs and 46 RBI. As long as managers could deal with the poor batting average, he can be rostered in most formats.

Fri Aug 27 202113:27Yasmani Grandal Activated On Friday
The Chicago White Sox announced on Friday that they have activated catcher Yasmani Grandal (knee) from the 10-day injured list. The veteran was placed on the injured list on July 6 and underwent surgery the following day to repair the tendon tear in his left knee. When he was in the lineup, Grandal wasn't doing much with a .188 batting average. Despite the low average, he has hit 14 home runs and knocked in 38 runs to go along with a respectable .388 OBP. Grandal will return to a stronger lineup with outfielders Eloy Jimenez and Luis Robert both healthy and that could help increase the backstops RBI opportunities moving forward. With Grandal being activated, the White Sox have sent catcher Zack Collins to Triple-A Charlotte. The former first-round pick got plenty of opportunities this season to prove himself, but didn't do much to impress. Catcher Seby Zavala will now backup Grandal moving forward.

Thu Aug 26 202114:05Yasmani Grandal Could Be Activated This Weekend
Chicago White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal (knee) is inching toward a return to the field. On Wednesday, White Sox manager Tony La Russa stated that Grandal's return was "imminent" while giving little additional context. On Thursday, La Russa offered a bit more clarity, saying, "I think there's a chance that he's going to be back this weekend." Grandal has been sidelined since early July, when he underwent surgery to repair a partially-torn tendon in his left knee. Prior to the injury, Grandal slashed .188/.388/.436 with 14 home runs, 38 RBI and 42 runs over 63 games. His 24.5% walk rate on the year has made him far more valuable in leagues that count walks and in OBP leagues.

Wed Aug 25 202121:42Yasmani Grandal Expected To Return Soon
Chicago White Sox manager Tony La Russa said catcher Yasmani Grandal's (knee) return is "imminent." He was ruled out for the series against the Toronto Blue Jays, which concludes on Thursday, but is expected to return to the lineup soon. The 32-year-old slashed 321/.394/.464 with a home run, a double, four runs, and three RBI during nine rehab assignments with Double-A Birmingham and Triple-A Charlotte. Fantasy managers should look to add Grandal off the waiver wire if he was dropped after his injury. Grandal is more valuable in OBP and points leagues after slashing .188/.388/.436 across 246 plate appearances in 2021.

Sun Aug 22 202111:27Yasmani Grandal Out Through Road Trip
Chicago White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal (knee) won't return on the team's current road trip, which concludes Thursday in Toronto, the Chicago Sun-Times reported, citing manager Tony La Russa. The White Sox don't want to push Grandal too much. The veteran, who has been rehabbing at Triple-A Charlotte, is a must-roster catcher in just about all fantasy leagues, so if he was dropped after his injury, he's a great player to add. Over 63 games this year, he's slashing .188/.388/.436 with 14 home runs, 38 RBI and 42 runs. His 24.5% walk rate is the best in the majors among eligible players.

Thu Aug 12 202108:53Yasmani Grandal Goes 2-For-3 In His Rehab Debut
Chicago White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal (knee) had a strong debut rehab outing at Double-A Birmingham on Wednesday. He went 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI in the game. Grandal has been out since early July after undergoing surgery on his knee. Based on his productive Double-A debut, it's safe to assume that he'll be back with the White Sox within the next week or so. He's a must-roster catcher in just about all fantasy leagues, so if he was dropped after his injury, he's a great player to add. Over 63 games this year, he's slashing .188/.388/.436 with 14 home runs, 38 RBI and 42 runs. His 24.5% walk rate is the best in the majors amongst eligible players.

Wed Aug 11 202112:12Yasmani Grandal Set For Rehab Assignment Wednesday
Chicago White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal (knee) was sent to Double-A Birmingham on Wednesday to begin a rehab assignment. He's been sidelined since early July after undergoing surgery to repair a torn tendon in his left knee. The 32-year-old is trending in the right direction and, barring any setbacks, could be reinstated from the injured list as soon as next week. Grandal has more value in OBP and two-catcher formats after slashing .188/.388/.436 with 14 homers, 38 RBI, and 42 runs scored across 246 plate appearances in 2021. With catcher being such a shallow position, fantasy managers should stash Grandal in most league formats. Zack Collins will continue to handle catcher duties while Grandal is sidelined.

Wed Jul 7 202112:08OF swap: White Sox dump veteran Eaton to make room for Engel
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Chicago White Sox designated outfielder Adam Eaton for assignment Wednesday to make room for the return from the injured list of outfielder Adam Engel. The 32-year-old Eaton, in his 10th major league season, batted .201 with a career-low .642 OPS in 58 games. He had five homers and 28 RBIs in his second stint with the White Sox, whom he played for from 2014-16. Eaton spent the previous four years with the Washington Nationals, winning a World Series with them in 2019. Manager Tony LaRussa said dumping Eaton was “a very difficult decision for the organization,” prompted by the emergence of rookies Gavin Sheets and Andrew Vaughn. “A veteran sitting around and not playing, it kind of goes against why he was brought here. It's just the reality of the development of some of our young guys,” LaRussa said, adding: “Too many good players. It's a good problem to have.” Engel was reinstated from his second injured list stint of the season with a strained right hamstring, but... [More]
