Thu Dec 5 201311:51Red Sox sign Mujica to 2-yr, $9.5M contract
Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reports that the Red Sox have signed free agent right-hander Edward Mujica to a two-year, $9.5 million deal.
The contract is only pending a physical, which is scheduled for Thursday. Mujica fell apart down the stretch for the Cardinals this fall, but he was unhittable for most of the summer and the Red Sox will hope that he can recapture the magic on his split-change with a full offseason of rest. Mujica joins closer Koji Uehara, Junichi Tazawa and Craig Breslow in what could be a very good Boston bullpen again in 2014.

Tue Dec 3 201311:42Report: Orioles interested in Mujica, Axford
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Orioles are interested in Edward Mujica and John Axford.
This confirms a report from Andrew Rickli. The Orioles are on the lookout for a closer after trading Jim Johnson, with Mujica and Axford likely to sign at lesser rates than some of the high-profile options available in free agency. It could be a savvy way to use some of the cost-savings from dealing Johnson.

Fri Nov 29 201318:21Several teams interested in Edward Mujica
Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish reports that the Orioles, Indians, Cubs and Phillies are interested in free agent reliever Edward Mujica.
Cotillo notes that Mujica is expected to receive a contract similar to the three-year, $15.75 million deal that Joe Smith inked with the Angels. The 29-year-old right-hander notched 37 saves for the Cardinals this season, while posting a 2.78 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and impeccable 46/5 K/BB ratio in 64 2/3 innings. His fantasy value will be entirely dependent on how close he is to save chances in the respective bullpen he winds up in.

Fri Nov 22 201312:29Angels looking at RPs before SPs
Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports that the Angels are focused on adding relievers at this time.
They need starting pitching, but it appears the Halos want to lock up some relief help first. Fletcher mentions Joe Smith, Edward Mujica and J.P. Howell as three relievers that could be possibilities. They might have to give three years in order to land Smith and/or Mujica.

Fri Nov 15 201308:24Phillies 'strongly pursuing' setup men
Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan reports that the Phillies are "strongly pursuing" setup men, including Edward Mujica.
He adds that they're willing to give a three-year deal to land someone for the eighth inning. Mujica will have trouble landing a closing job after the way his season ended, but it sounds like getting a healthy deal as a setup man won't be an issue. The 29-year-old held a 2.78 ERA with 37 saves for the Cardinals this past season but dealt with shoulder issues and had an 11.05 mark over his final 7 1/3 regular-season innings.

Wed Oct 2 201316:22Edward Mujica makes Cards' roster for NLDS
Edward Mujica is on the Cardinals' NLDS roster.
But it's hard to envision him being used in any sort of high-leverage situations. Mujica posted an ugly 11.05 ERA over his final 7 1/3 regular-season innings. Trevor Rosenthal will be the St. Louis closer in October.

Sat Sep 21 201317:42STL's closer situation 'fluid moving forward'
According to MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch, the Cardinals' closer situation is "fluid moving forward."
Edward Mujica has had a terrible month and acknowledged Friday night that he is feeling overall fatigue. Trevor Rosenthal is probably the guy to own in fantasy leagues, but Cardinals manager Mike Matheny will likely use a matchup-to-matchup approach. Kevin Siegrist is a darkhorse for save opportunities down the stretch.

Sat Sep 21 201300:20Mujica's struggles continue vs. Brewers
Edward Mujica allowed two runs on three hits and a walk over one-third of an inning Friday against the Brewers.
After entering the bottom of the ninth inning with a 6-4 lead, Mujica gave up an RBI single and loaded the bases before giving way to John Axford, who eventually allowed the tying run to score on an infield single by Aramis Ramirez. While Mujica has been untouchable for most of the season, he has a 9.45 ERA over eight appearances this month. We could have a closer controversy on our hands here.

Thu Sep 19 201320:35Edward Mujica blows fourth save
Edward Mujica blew his fourth save of the season in Thursday's extra innings loss to the Rockies.
Todd Helton took Mujica deep with a towering blast to right field to lead off the ninth. He then allowed a two-out double but escaped further damage. Mujica has now allowed at least two hits in eight of his last 11 outings and holds a 5.40 ERA and 1.70 WHIP over that time. His job is safe, though, especially since Trevor Rosenthal hasn't been his usual dominant self lately.

Sat Aug 24 201322:21Edward Mujica earns one-out save in return
Edward Mujica earned a one-out save Saturday in the Cardinals' victory over the Braves.
It was an easy but effective return outing for the St. Louis closer, who had been sidelined for a couple days with upper back and shoulder discomfort. Mujica should be an elite fantasy option down the stretch and may be able to cash in on the open market this winter.

Edward Mujica (shoulder) said Friday that he felt much better while playing catch, but is still unavailable to pitch in Friday's game.
Mujica is dealing with a fatigued shoulder, but the plan if for him to pitch through the issue for the remainder of the season rather than serving a stint on the disabled list. He should be ready to return at some point over the weekend.

Fri Aug 23 201310:35Edward Mujica likely unavailable again Friday
Edward Mujica (shoulder) was unavailable to pitch Thursday and will likely be again Friday.
Mujica has received treatment for a knot in his upper back near his neck. The Cardinals are saying it's only fatigue, though, with GM John Mozeliak describing Mujica as "100 percent good to go" from a health standpoint. With Trevor Rosenthal having appeared the last two days and the Cards wanting to avoid Michael Wacha on back-to-back day, the club could use Seth Maness in a potential save chance Friday.

Wed Aug 21 201322:10Edward Mujica nursing shoulder issue
Edward Mujica is nursing some soreness behind his right shoulder under his trapezius.
Mujica was checked on by trainers during an appearance Wednesday after he didn't look comfortable on the mound. He remained in the game to close out a win, though he did give up a long home run in the process. The closer said he's "not concerned about it," but Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said the team will "give him days when we can." Mujica owners should grab Trevor Rosenthal as insurance.

Mon Aug 19 201308:26Mujica unavailable in Chicago due to fatigue
Edward Mujica was unavailable for the Cardinals' weekend series in Chicago due to general fatigue.
Mujica worked two innings three times in a four-game span last week, and it all caught up to him when the Cardinals flew up to Wrigley Field on Thursday night. "We had to back him up a couple of times with extra-inning games and having to go multiple innings," said manager Mike Matheny. "That's just not something he was ready for." Mujica expects to be fine for Monday's series opener in Milwaukee, but Trevor Rosenthal makes for a worthwhile stash in mixed fantasy leagues just in case.
