"That's what I would think and what I'm hoping," Harrison said of a rehab assignment. "I'm ready to get back into a game situation." The other option is for him to throw another batting practice session before being re-evaluated. Either way, it sounds like Harrison is getting close to game action in the near future. If he continues to progress, a return late next month looks promising.

Matt Harrison (back) is hoping to begin throwing off a mound just after the All-Star break.
Harrison is currently limited to throwing long toss and playing catch off the mound. The left-hander is hoping to be back by the end of August after a pair of surgeries on his back. "We're still looking at the end of August if all goes well," said Harrison. "Maybe six or seven bullpen sessions and a couple of live batting practices and hopefully I can get in a game [on a rehab assignment] by the beginning of August. But everything has to go right for that to happen."

Matt Harrison (back) isn't expected to rejoin the Rangers until September.
Harrison will begin a throwing program on Monday, but the Rangers want him to take it extra slowly after he underwent a pair of surgeries on his back. He could throw on flat ground for 4-6 weeks before being allowed to throw off a mound, and it will likely be at least another month after that before he's built up enough endurance to rejoin the rotation.

Matt Harrison recently had a setback with his back that required an additional surgery on Wednesday.
Harrison underwent an operation on April 23 to repair a herniated disk in his lower back, and he began additional discomfort this week, necessitating another operation. According to T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com, the Rangers are "operating under the assumption that Harrison will pitch again this season, but he will be out for at least three months." In other words, we won't see him again until August at the earliest, and it seems like there's a good chance it will be longer than that.

Surgery was deemed necessary after his back failed to respond to multiple epidural injections. Despite striking out nine, Matt Harrison lost to the Astros after giving up six runs -- five earned -- in 5 2/3 innings on Sunday night.
Harrison started off with three scoreless innings, then he started leaving balls up. He departed in the sixth having allowed four runs, and Derek Lowe immediately gave up a three-run homer after taking over, inflating Harrison's ERA.
