Carter has 21 home runs in 93 games this season but is also sporting a weak .212 batting average and .291 on-base percentage. The 27-year-old will be arbitration-eligible for the first time heading into 2015 and is under contractual control through 2018, so Houston will want something fairly significant in return.

Carter has now blown by the Mendoza Line, as he's up to a .213 average. The two RBI brought him up to 43 on the year. Carter hasn't ever been one to hit for average, but he does have nineteen home runs and a .478 slugging percentage, which tells you that he makes his hits count. Always a hot/cold slugger, Carter's on the scorching side this month, slashing .306/.352/.735 for July.

Chris Carter hit two home runs as the Astros bested the Rangers 8-3 on Tuesday.
Carter connected off of Neftali Feliz in the sixth inning before taking Aaron Poreda deep in the eighth. The homers give him four jacks in his last four games, and he's 7-for-20 with six runs scored and seven RBI in his last five. The blasts give him 17 home runs overall. It's about all he does well -- he's batting just .194/.274/.446 for the year -- but in AL-only leagues where pop is hard to come by, Carter is a decent source of power, if nothing else.

It was his second career slam, the other also coming this year. Despite that, Carter has just 35 RBI to go along with his 15 homers this year. His average has been below the Mendoza Line for a month now, and he shows no real sign of taking a step forward. 30-homer power alone isn't enough to make him a decent regular.

Carter picked a good time to get his first hit of the ballgame, blasting his 13th homer of the season off of J.J. Putz to send the Astros home happy. Aside from the power, though, Carter has left a lot to be desired offensively. He's slashing .199/.291/.464 with 69 strikeouts in 223 plate appearances.

Carter's last four hits have all been homers. They've been spread out over nine days, but that's still pretty good. Overall, Carter is hitting .199 with 12 homers and 29 RBI in 191 at-bats. Lifetime, he has 60 homers in 1,029 at-bats, but he still hasn't proven himself to be a quality regular. He has to improve the rest of the way to remain in Houston's plans for 2015.
