PHOENIX (AP) — Milwaukee Brewers left-hander Brent Suter reached a two-year, $2.5 million deal Sunday that avoids an arbitration hearing that had been set for next week. The 30-year-old Suter returned from Tommy John surgery last September and went 4-0 with a 0.49 ERA in nine relief appearances, helping the Brewers earn an NL wild-card spot.Suter had mostly been a starter the previous two seasons with Milwaukee before having elbow surgery in July 2018. He is expected to be used out of the bullpen this year.Suter gets a $100,000 signing bonus payable within 60 days and salaries of $900,000 this year and $1.5 million in 2021. His 2021 salary can escalate by up to $250,000 based on innings this year: $50,000 each for 80, 100, 120, 140 and 160.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Sat Feb 15 202015:48Hader loses to Brewers in arbitration, players drop to 1-6
PHOENIX (AP) — Baseball's arbitration model for relief pitchers is broken, Milwaukee closer Josh Hader said Friday after losing his case against the Milwaukee Brewers.Hader will earn $4.1 million rather than his $6.4 million request, a decision that dropped players to 1-6 in hearings this year. Arbitrators Mark Burstein, Dan Brent and Frederic Horowitz made the decision, a day after hearing arguments."We're in a unique position, the way we're used as relievers nowadays," Hader said. "I think the system's just outdated on how we're used. We're mostly being used for lineups, not innings."While teams used to have set roles for pitchers in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, computer algorithms now determine which matchups in the batting order are best for which pitcher."We're going to a new part where guys are pitching in situations that could come in the fourth inning and you're facing the middle of the lineup to get maybe out of a jam," Hader said. Hader made his big league debut in June... [More]

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Free agent pitcher David Phelps and the Milwaukee Brewers finalized a one-year contract on Thursday that guarantees $1.5 million and includes a club option for 2021.The 33-year-old right-hander was 2-1 with one save and a 3.41 ERA in 41 games for Toronto and Cubs last season. The reliever was traded by the Blue Jays to Chicago in late July.Phelps missed the 2018 season because of Tommy John surgery after injuring his elbow in spring training. He is 32-34 with six saves and a 3.86 ERA in seven seasons with the New York Yankees, Miami, Seattle, Toronto and the Cubs.“It seemed like this offseason, teams were really focusing on some other parts of their teams, then rounding out the bullpen at the end. Once Milwaukee showed interest, it made sense. I know some guys on the team, the team has been in the playoffs the last two years," he said. “It just seemed like a really good fit."Phelps said he talked with former Marlins teammate Christian Yelich about joining the Brewers. Sat Jan 11 202000:12Brewers sign INF Gyorko to $2M, 1-year deal with 2021 option
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Infielder Jedd Gyorko signed a $2 million, one-year deal Friday with the Milwaukee Brewers that includes a club option for 2021. The 31-year-old Gyorko has played seven major league seasons with San Diego, St. Louis and the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was hampered by injuries in 2019 and batted .174 with two homers in 62 games with the Cardinals and Dodgers. He had been a steady contributor prior to last season and hit 30 homers for St. Louis in 2016.“We think he fits our team really well with a right-handed bat and the ability to play multiple positions,” general manager David Stearns said, adding “we believe he's healthy now.”A right-handed hitter with a sharp defensive reputation, Gyorko is expected to split time with left-handed hitting Eric Sogard at third base after Mike Moustakas and Travis Shaw left Milwaukee as free agents. Gyorko has also played second base, first base and shortstop, although he's unlikely to play much short going forward.Milwaukee designated right-hander Jake Faria for assignment. Stearns said he hopes Faria clears waivers and remains in the organization. The club settled with catcher Omar Narvaez on a one-year deal for $2,725,000.The Brewers exchanged salary arbitration figures with All-Star closer Josh Hader — he asked for $6.4 million and was offered $4.1 million — and left-hander Brent Suter, who sought $1.25 million and was offered $825,000.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

Wed Oct 2 201901:29Hader, Grisham combine to give away NL wild-card game
WASHINGTON (AP) — Trent Grisham's eyes were still red, his cheeks stained by tears, as a group of Milwaukee Brewers teammates gathered near his locker in the visitors' clubhouse at Nationals Park to offer hugs and words of encouragement.Everything was going according to plan for manager Craig Counsell and the Brewers — get a lead, mix and match with the bullpen — until, suddenly, it wasn't. Milwaukee was undone by wildness from closer Josh Hader and an error by Grisham in right field that allowed the go-ahead run to score with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning. It added up to a gut-punch of a 4-3, season-ending loss to the Washington Nationals in the NL wild-card game Tuesday night."It's going to sting. It's going to sting for a long time. Essentially gifting the Nationals a Divisional (Series) berth," Grisham said. "It's going to hurt. I expect it to hurt."He is a 22-year-old rookie who debuted Aug. 1 and played in only 51 major league games this season, taking over in right primarily... [More]
