Werth is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Phillies.

With the Nationals finally eliminated from the playoffs, Matt Williams might begin resting veterans and make sure the team is ready for 2016. The 36-year-old Werth, often prone to days off, is definitely a candidate for that. Matt den Dekker will get the start in left field, batting seventh.

Werth was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in a losing cause against Philadelphia on Friday night.

Werth has struggled through an injury-plagued season, but finally healthy, he has gotten hot in September. Werth, still hitting a sub-par .228, has just 12 long ones on the year, but he has gone yard eight times this month while accumulating 19 RBI in 96 at bats. This is the kind of production the Nationals have been missing in this season of disappointments.

Werth had his second two-homer game in three days Wednesday as the Nationals down the Phillies 12-2.

Both were solo shots, and Werth now has 11 bombs on the year. After struggling through an injury-plagued 2015, he's now healthy and wrapping things up by hitting .302/.380/.635 in 63 September at-bats.

Werth went 2-for-6 with a grand slam and solo homer in Monday's 8-7 win over the Phillies.

Werth put the Nationals on top with a 10th inning go-ahead home run off Dalier Hinojosa. The 36-year-old has begun to show signs of wear and tear this season, missing prolonged stretches due to injury and stealing no bases. With another two years remaining on his contract, fantasy owners will hope for a return to form from Werth in 2016.

Werth went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in a 4-3 win over the Cardinals on Wednesday.

It was only his sixth homer of the season and that alone tells the story of Werth's season. Injuries have really been a major factor to his .218 average and lack of power and fantasy owners can only hope this is the beginning of a hot stretch for the one All-Star.

Werth drew a walk, doubled, and homered as part of a two-run, three-RBI effort in Sunday's win over the Marlins.

Werth is barely hanging on to a season batting average over .200, but since replacing Michael Taylor as the Nats' leadoff hitter, he's begun to resemble the strong performer he was the previous two seasons. Over his last 10 games, Werth has maintained a .263 average, .378 on-base percentage, and a .500 slugging mark.

Werth went 2-for-4 with a homer, a walk and two runs against the Padres on Thursday.

The surge continues for Werth, who bounced back from a hitless outing to draw his fifth walk in the last five games while posting his fourth multi-hit outing in the last nine. He's still got a long way to go to correct his hideous season numbers, but it looks like Werth isn't quite finished yet.

Werth was a late add to the Nationals' lineup Saturday and he will occupy the leadoff spot, the Washington Post's Chelsea Janes reports.

Manager Matt Williams initially was going to give the veteran a day off, but Werth arrived at the park and said he felt good, hence the last-minute lineup change.

Werth is out of the lineup Saturday.

He has five hits over his last four games, but considering his age and troubles getting healthy this season, it is understandable for the Nationals to give him strategic days off. Clint Robinson will start in left field and hit sixth Saturday.

Werth doubled, tripled and drove home two runs Wednesday in Colorado.

He also struck out twice, but Coors Field has agreed with Werth so far, as he came in slumping horribly, but has ripped off four hits (three for extra bases) in the last two games. He and the Nats will get one more crack at the ol' Coors Field stat boost Thursday.

Werth will bat leadoff Tuesday against the Rockies.

Manager Matt Williams has decided to shake up the batting order in the midst of a six-game losing streak, moving Michael Taylor and his .284 OBP to the No. 7 spot and Werth atop the order. Werth hasn't exactly been on fire lately either (to say the least), recording just one hit in his last six games. It marks Werth's first time leading off since 2013.

Werth will take a seat Friday with right-hander Matt Cain on the mound for the Giants. His struggles at the plate have continued in August as he has collected just five hits in 42 at-bats. Clint Robinson will take over in left field for the Nationals on Friday.
