Erik Cordier was recalled in a corresponding move, but the Marlins have not announced who will take Phelps' spot in the rotation. Chris Narveson, who tossed 2.2 innings in relief of Phelps on Sunday, is a logical candidate.

The initial examination on Phelps apparently wasn't encouraging, after the right-hander was pulled early in Sunday's start after experiencing discomfort in right elbow. The Marlins are expected to provide more word on the severity of the injury in the coming days, but in the meantime, Phelps' absence only further weakens an ugly rotation that's already without Jose Fernandez (biceps), Henderson Alvarez (shoulder), Mat Latos (traded), and Dan Haren (traded).

Phelps was removed from Sunday's start against the Cardinals in the third inning with right elbow discomfort, Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post reports.

Phelps was charged with three runs (all earned) on four hits and a walk over 2.1 innings before his departure. The Marlins are listing him as day-to-day and will likely reevaluate his condition over the next 24 hours before determining if he can take the hill for his next scheduled start Friday versus the Phillies.

However, Phelps' relatively low strikeout rate along with the Marlins' likelihood to enter most games as the underdog puts a cap on his fantasy upside.

The former Yankee does sport a solid 3.15 ERA at Marlins Park, and he'll get a crack at redemption when he faces these same Padres at home Friday.

Phelps (4-5, 3.86 ERA) is set to serve as Miami's swingman - primarily bullpen duty, with an occasional spot start if injuries dictate the need. That is a role he is well-suited for, but it reduces his overall fantasy value unless he works his way into the regular rotation.

Phelps, who tossed a scoreless inning in relief in his last appearance Sunday, is likely to remain in the bullpen indefinitely with the return of Jose Fernandez this week, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.

If injuries deplete the team's depth again, or if a trade or two at the July 31 deadline sends some of Miami's starting pitching elsewhere, a role change could take place again. Most likely, Phelps will make the majority of his appearances as a reliever for the remainder of 2015.
