3B Yangervis Solarte was 3-for-4 Sunday with his second homer. He is off to a 10-for-27 start with two doubles and two homers for eight RBIs in seven games. Solarte has hit safely in five of the Padres' seven games this season with three multi-hit games.

INF Yangervis Solarte, 29, was the Padres regular third baseman in 2016 while Ryan Schimpf, 28, took over at second after Cory Spangenberg was lost for the season with a torn quadriceps. And at the start of spring training, the switch-hitting Solarte was again at third with Spangenberg and Schimpf at second. But neither Schimpf nor Spangenberg, 26, are as good as Solarte on the pivot or around the ball. After Solarte returned from the WBC, he started playing second with Schimpf and Spangenberg, both left-handed hitters vying at third. Spangenberg has also gotten a look in the outfield.

3B Yangervis Solarte extended his hitting streak to a career-long 14 games. It is the longest streak by a Padre this season. Matt Kemp had a 15-gamer last year. Solarte figures to be the Padres' starting third baseman next year even though the team is expected to undergo a makeover.

"He's been our go-to guy, and he has just been outstanding, especially considering everything he has been through," Green said. Most of the other positions are open as the Padres welcome an influx of young talent. Solarte extended his hitting streak to 13 games on Wednesday, the longest by a Padre this season.

3B Yangervis Solarte returned to the starting lineup after returning from his wife's funeral on Saturday. Solarte, who pinch-hit on Saturday, went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Solarte will likely play the majority of the games in the final week.

INF Yangervis Solarte returned to the Padres on Saturday night two days after his wife's funeral in Miami, Fla., and delivered a pinch-hit single that led to the game-tying run. Yuliett Solarte, 31, died Sept. 17 from complications of cancer. Solarte returned to San Diego with his three young daughters. "It's hard to describe my emotions," Solarte said after Saturday night's 10-inning loss to the Giants. "She and I knew I belonged back with the team. We talked about it."

"Everybody's heart breaks for him right now," Padres manager Andy Green said prior to Sunday's game against the Rockies. "There's nothing that replaces a wife and a mother. All we can do is love him."
