NEW YORK (AP) — Yankees reliever Ben Heller was ejected from Wednesday night’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays for hitting Hunter Renfroe in the leg with a pitch, the latest chapter in a simmering rivalry between the top two teams in the AL East.Heller plunked Renfroe with a 95 mph fastball with one out in the fifth inning and was promptly tossed by first base umpire Chad Fairchild. Heller tried to plead his case and so did acting New York manager Carlos Mendoza before Luis Cessa came on to pitch. The ejection occurred hours after Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman was handed a three-game suspension by Major League Baseball for throwing a 101 mph fastball over Mike Brosseau’s head in the ninth inning of New York's 5-3 win over the first-place Rays on Tuesday night. Chapman said Wednesday afternoon the pitch was not intentional and he is appealing the suspension.Yankees manager Aaron Boone and Tampa Bay counterpart Kevin Cash were each given a one-game suspension and served their bans Wednesday.Chapman’s... NEW YORK (AP) — Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman was suspended for three games Wednesday, a day after he threw a fastball near the head of pinch-hitter Michael Brosseau while closing out his first save of the season in a 5-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.Chapman said the pitch was not intentional and he is appealing the suspension.“I think it was a little harsh,” Chapman said through a translator. “That’s the reason I’m going to appeal.”Chapman, who previously was disciplined in his career for intentionally throwing at the head area, also was fined by Major League Baseball. Yankees manager Aaron Boone received a one-game suspension and was also fined an undisclosed amount following the events during Tuesday night’s game.“I don’t think I should be sitting out tonight, nor Chappy, but I do respect the process and the thoroughness and the care that they gave to kind of walk it through this,” Boone said. “I accept it but I certainly don’t agree with it.”Rays manager Kevin Cash received a one-game... Yankees manager Aaron Boone received a one-game suspension and was also fined an undisclosed amount following the events during Tuesday night's game. Rays manager Kevin Cash received a one-game suspension and was fined an undisclosed amount after being ejected during the game and for his comments afterward. Umpires convened before issuing warnings to both benches, and Cash was ejected after coming onto the field to argue.Cash said following the game that someone has to be accountable, adding, "And the last thing I’ll say on this is I got a whole damn stable full of guys that throw 98 mph. Period.”Boone and Cash were scheduled to serve their suspensions Wednesday as the Rays and Yankees wrapped up a three-game series in New York. Chapman was also scheduled to begin serving his suspension Wednesday, unless he appeals. Tensions have run high between the clubs for years, at least since now-retired Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia was ejected for plunking Jesus Sucre in 2018. ___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

A look at what’s happening around the majors today:___RED-HOT RIVALSThe Rays and Yankees play for the final time this season a night after New York closer Aroldis Chapman threw a 101 mph fastball near the head of pinch-hitter Michael Brosseau on Tuesday, prompting the benches to empty after the game. Rays manager Kevin Cash called it “ridiculous” and said the situation was mishandled by the Yankees, Chapman and the umpires. He threatened to have his hard-throwing pitchers take aim at New York hitters in the finale. “Somebody has to be accountable,” Cash said. “The last thing I’ll say on it is I got a whole damn stable full of guys that throw 98 mph. Period.”The AL East-leading Rays are 7-2 against the Yankees this season and lead New York by 3 ½ games. They plan to activate right-hander Charlie Morton (1-1, 5.40) from the injured list after he missed three weeks with right shoulder inflammation.VIRUS UPDATEThe Athletics will be off until at least Friday to allow for additional testing and... Wed Sep 2 202001:28Chapman's 1st save seals Yankees' 5-3 win over Tampa Bay
NEW YORK (AP) — Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman threw a 101 mph fastball near the head of pinch-hitter Michael Brosseau while closing out his first save of the season, prompting the benches to empty after New York ended a six-game losing streak against the Tampa Bay Rays with a 5-3 victory Tuesday night.Chapman’s first pitch to Brosseau with two outs in the ninth inning whizzed past Brosseau’s head, and umpires met before issuing warnings to both benches amid a budding rivalry that’s been dominated this season by Tampa Bay. Chapman struck out Brosseau to end it, and Brosseau began walking toward the visiting dugout before turning back to exchange words with someone on the Yankees. The dugouts and benches emptied and players gathered near home plate, but they mostly kept their distance before dispersing to their respective clubhouses.DJ LeMahieu homered twice, and Gio Urshela hit a tiebreaking, three-run Little League homer in the sixth inning as New York beat the Rays at Yankee Stadium for... Tue Sep 1 202023:28Rays' Cash makes threat after Chapman's 101 mph brush back
NEW YORK (AP) — If Aroldis Chapman's 101 mph brush-back pitch Tuesday night didn't push the Yankees-Rays rivalry to its boiling point, Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash's threat certainly did. “Somebody’s got to be accountable," Cash said. “And the last thing I’ll say on this is I got a whole damn stable full of guys that throw 98 mph. Period.”Chapman threw a 101 mph fastball near the head of pinch-hitter Michael Brosseau while closing out his first save of the season, prompting the benches to empty after New York ended a six-game losing streak against the Tampa Bay Rays with a 5-3 victory. “We’re talking about a 100 mph fastball over a young man’s head,” Cash said. “It makes no sense. It’s poor judgment, poor coaching, it’s just poor teaching what they’re doing and what they’re allowing to do, the chirping from the dugout."Chapman’s first pitch to Brosseau with two outs in the ninth inning whizzed past Brosseau’s head.
