The 30-year old Rivera has likely played himself into a timeshare at catcher in 2015, with 11 homers and 44 RBI in 289 at-bats. Rivera (.256/.324/.439) gives the Padres a quality power bat towards the bottom of the lineup.

Rivera knocked in the only run of the game in the first inning form the cleanup spot. The 31-year-old notched his third consecutive multi-hit game.

The Padres' catcher has done a decent job this season since he started getting full-time at-bats when Yasmani Grandal moved to first base to fill in for the injured Yonder Alonso. Rivera provides good pop from behind the plate with nine home runs in just over 250 at-bats this season.

Rivera will be behind the plate for the fifth straight game Sunday against the Dodgers, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

With Yasmani Grandal moving over to first base more frequently in the wake of Yonder Alonso's season-ending forearm surgery, Rivera has earn more consistent playing time, a trend that could continue in September. Though the 31-year-old journeyman doesn't look like a foundational piece for the rebuilding Padres, he hasn't justified his removal from the lineup since picking up more plate appearances. He's produced two-hit games in each of his last three starts, improving his average to .252 over 218 at-bats on the season.

Rivera was the hero Wednesday, going 2-for-5 with a game-tying home run in the ninth inning and a walk-off single in the tenth to beat the Padres 3-2.

Rivera hit his first home run at Petco Park since joining the Padres and his ninth overall in 2014. The 31-year-old backstop is slashing .241/.306/.425 with 32 RBI and 18 runs in 212 at bats this season.
