Fri Jan 16 201517:01Jaso (concussion) agreed to one-year
Jaso (concussion) agreed to a one-year, $3.175 million contract with the Rays on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Jaso appeared headed for a big payday in his third year of arbitration after posting a .800 OPS and seven homers in the first half of the 2014 season, but he battled concussion issues and ineffectiveness en route to a .675 OPS and two homers in the second half. Thus, he had to settle for a relatively modest bump in salary (from $2.3 million). Jaso appears primed to open the year as the primary option behind the plate, ahead of Rene Rivera, but the Rays have reportedly discussed giving him some time at first base and in the outfield.

Jaso could see time at first base and in the outfield for the Rays in 2015 according to President of Baseball Opertations Matthew Silverman.
Over his 480 games in the majors, Jaso has only made two appearances anywhere other than catcher or DH, so this is an interesting development to say the least. Recently acquired from Oakland, the 31-year-old veteran is viewed as a bat-first player by the Rays and for good reason, as he sports a career .359 OBP and 12.6 percent walk rate. Jaso has been adequate behind the plate in his career, but lingering effects from multiple concussions will likely limit his time there going forward.
Sat Jan 10 201513:28John Jaso: Traded To Rays
Jaso was traded to the Rays on Saturday, the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser reports.
The deal nets the A's Ben Zobrist and Yunel Escobar, as the A's have now traded their two best catchers from 2014. Jaso is an ideal option to take over the strong side of a platoon at catcher with Rene Rivera, as the left-handed hitting backstop hit .272 against righties and just .167 against southpaws last season. Over a full season, Jaso could hit close to 10 homers with a solid average for the Rays.

A's GM Billy Beane said Wednesday that Jaso (concussion) has been cleared for all activity, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports.
This is encouraging news, though Jaso's future behind the plate remains clouded. While doctors have cleared him to catch again, it's uncertain how much Jaso will catch in 2015 after he again missed significant time due to recurring symptoms at the end of last season. The A's may be inclined to take a cautious approach, though his options are limited with Billy Butler signed to be the team's primary DH. It's also possible the team could look to get Jaso involved at first base.

Jaso (concussion) still hasn't been cleared by MLB for baseball activities.
If Jaso returns next year, catching seems improbable given the severity of his concussions. The A's are interested in him as a DH, however.
Thu Sep 25 201418:41Jaso (concussion) won't play again this season
Jaso (concussion) won't play again this season, John Hickey of the Bay Area News Group reports.
Jaso has been out of action since late-August, and he doesn't appear to be ready to return to the field anytime soon. In the meantime, look for Derek Norris and Geovany Soto to see the majority of the reps behind the plate.
Thu Sep 18 201414:00Jaso will meet with concussion specialist before end of week
Jaso will meet with a concussion specialist before the end of the week, John Hickey of the Bay Area News Group reports.
If Jaso checks out OK, he could be cleared to resume hitting at some point next week, though there remains a distinct possibility he does not play again this season. The 30-year-old's symptoms recently resurfaced, resulting in what's now been more than a week-long shutdown period.

Jaso (concussion) has not been cleared to resume baseball activities, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Jaso appeared close to a return earlier this month, but the team ended up shutting him down after his symptoms resurfaced. He's been shut down from all baseball-related activities for close to a week now, and at this point, appears unlikely to play again this season.
Wed Sep 10 201418:21Jaso (concussion) has not yet been cleared to play
Jaso (concussion) has not yet been cleared to play, and will cease baseball activities for the time being, the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser reports.
He will travel back to the Bay Area, and his timetable for return is unknown. Manager Doug Melvin says it's too soon to say Jaso is done for the season, but that doctors want to get him into a different routine away from the field for now. In single-season leagues, it's probably time to start looking for other options.

Jaso (concussion) will visit a concussion specialist in Pittsburgh on Wednesday, after which he could be cleared to return to the Athletics, John Hickey of the Bay Area News Group reports.
The exam will clear Jaso to be activated this week, as expected, but his amount of immediate playing time will be unknown until his status is more clear. He likely won't be afforded much time at DH due to the acquisition of Adam Dunn on Aug. 31, while he may not be available as a backstop right off the bat, either.

Jaso (concussion) will likely be activated at some point in the next week, Joe Stilgich of CSN California reports.
Jaso will likely take on a role as a pinch hitter when he returns after the recent acquisition of Adam Dunn. He should also see some occasional starts behind the plate when he is healthy.

Jaso (concussion) will find out in the next couple days if he is cleared to rejoin the A's for pinch hitting duties, as it's still unlikely he'll be able to catch in the coming days, the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser reports.
It's unlikely that he'll be of much use to fantasy owners until he can get back behind the plate, which it doesn't sound like he will be doing in the very near future. The A's could certainly use Jaso as a backup to Derek Norris, but in the meantime, Geovany Soto will get most of the backup starts behind the dish.

Jaso (concussion) ran the bases Friday for the first time since landing on the 7-day DL, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports.
Jaso's concussion symptoms had been lingering for a couple weeks before he landed on the 7-day DL on Aug. 25, but his ability to run the bases Friday bodes well for his chances of returning in relatively short order. Derek Norris, Geovany Soto and Bryan Anderson will continue to share the workload behind the plate for the time being.
Mon Aug 25 201414:38Jaso placed on 7-day concussion DL on Monday
Jaso was placed on the 7-day concussion DL on Monday.
Jaso has mustered just one at-bat since last Wednesday, as concussion symptoms have grown worse over the last two weeks. The Athletics acquired Geovany Soto from the Rangers on Sunday, leaving the bulk of catching duties to Soto and Derek Norris during Jaso's stay on the disabled list.

Jaso will likely be placed on the 7-day concussion disabled list Monday, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Jaso has been experiencing concussion symptoms for a couple weeks, and it appears the A's will place him on the DL to open a roster spot for Geovany Soto, who was claimed off waivers. It remains to be seen when Jaso will play next, as he will need to be medically cleared of his symptoms before doing so.

Jaso has been experiencing concussion symptoms that have worsened over the past two weeks, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
This would seem to help explain why Jaso has been out of the lineup for the past three games, as well as why the team decided to trade for Geovany Soto on Sunday despite its ample depth at catcher. Jaso doesn't appear in danger of landing on the 7-day DL at the moment -- in fact, he was able to pinch-hit Saturday -- but a decline in playing time could be on the horizon. Concussions aren't foreign territory for Jaso, as the head injury ended up costing him much of the second half of the 2013 campaign as well.

Jaso is out of the lineup Friday against the Angels.
He'll be available off the bench, but will be out of the starting lineup for the third time in the last six games. Jonny Gomes will get the start at DH Friday against the Halos.

Fri Aug 15 201414:39Jaso not in lineup Friday against Braves
Jaso is not in the lineup Friday against the Braves.
Jaso will join four other lefties on the bench Friday with the left-handed Alex Wood on the mound for the Braves. His average has severely dipped in August, as he has just hit .118 for the month. Derek Norris will be behind the plate again Friday.
Sat Aug 9 201416:39Jaso out of lineup Saturday against Twins
Jaso is out of the lineup Saturday against the Twins.
Jaso will take the day off Saturday in favor of Derek Norris after three straight starts. He has struggled in his last six games, collecting just one hit, and will take a day to get his mind right. Derek Norris will start behind the plate for the A's and bat fifth Saturday.
