C Josh Phegley went 2-for-2 with a double and scored twice Tuesday night in a 5-4 loss to the Chicago White Sox, his former team. Phegley made his first start of the season. He hit an opposite-field single to right in the third inning, beating the shift. Then in the fifth he drilled a leadoff double.

A late scratch from Friday's lineup, Phegley was apparently hit in the back of the head with a bat during batting practice and suffered a concussion, according to Chandler Rome of MLB.com. The severity of the concussion is uncertain, but with Stephen Vogt (groin) also hurt, the A's will have to lean heavily on Carson Blair behind the plate.

Phegley was initially penciled in to start behind the plate against the Astros on Friday, but Carson Blair will instead take over at catcher against Mike Fiers.

Phegley has been working as the Athletics' everyday catcher of late while Stephen Vogt has been nursing a groin injury, but he'll receive a rest for Sunday's afternoon affair. Carson Blair will handle the catching duties.

With Stephen Vogt (groin) out indefinitely, Phegley is in line for most of the starts at catcher. However, after catching three straight games he will get Thursday off with Carson Blair getting the start behind the dish.

Phegley has been a big surprise for the A's and he continues to kill lefty pitching. He now has a .312 average and an .893 OPS against southpaws this season. Phegley's value is only in AL only formats, but he's a sneaky play in daily formats when squaring off against a lefty.

Phegley is back in the lineup Saturday, batting sixth against San Francisco.

Stephen Vogt is out of the lineup for Saturday's afternoon matchup after he caught all nine innings of Friday's lopsided loss. Phegley will take over catching duties as a result and is penciled in as the number six hitter against Madison Bumgarner and the Giants.

The A's are in San Francisco this weekend, so Bob Melvin will keep Stephen Vogt's bat in the lineup by using him behind the plate instead of using Phegley on Friday. That said, Saturday's day game could bring Phegley back into the lineup depending on whether Melvin wants to give Vogt rest after catching Friday night.

Phegley went 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored in Sunday's demolition of the Twins.

It was the first start in the last five games for Phegley, who continues to start almost exclusively against lefties. The 26-year-old is slugging .848 with six homers and 21 RBI in only 123 at-bats, but carries little value in season-long leagues because of the presence of Stephen Vogt.

Phegley was in the lineup due to Stehepn Vogt's elbow soreness and took full advantage. He homered in the fifth inning and then tied the game in the sixth inning with a double over the center fielder's head. Phegley has not had a lot of playing time, but has managed to hit .297 while also throwing out 43% of would be base stealers when he is in the lineup.

Phegley provided the whole of the Oakland offense Thursday by going 1-for-2 with a solo homer in a 3-1 loss to the Padres.

Curiously, the A's pinch hit for Phegley late in the game despite the success he'd experienced both against San Diego starter Ian Kennedy and in general this year, as the backup catcher now owns a .286 average and .825 OPS. It could be that he's starting to realize the potential he showed in the minors, but Phegley may not see enough playing time for that to matter.

He's now hitting .244/.304/.341 this season, working mostly in a platoon role with Stephen Vogt. The A's have used Phegley behind the plate for all nine games against an opposing left-handed starter, while he's only received three starts out of a possible 30 against right-handed pitching. Barring an injury to Vogt, it's unlikely that he'll see a significant uptick in playing time in the near future.

Phegley will take the bench Sunday with Stephen Vogt replacing him behind the plate. The two players seem to be in a strict platoon.

Phegley finished the spring hitting .218/.259/.455 in 20 games.

It wasn't a great spring at the plate for Phegley, but he did enough to earn an Opening Day big league roster spot. Stephen Vogt figures to serve as the regular starting catcher, but Phegley will be the backup option and could see some at bats against left-handed pitching.

Phegley appears to have an excellent shot to be the A's second catcher this season, reports Jane Lee of MLB.com.

Phegley, acquired in the Jeff Samardzija trade, will likely serve as the right-handed platoon partner to starting catcher Stephen Vogt. Vogt is still recovering from off-season foot surgery, so Phegley could see more than usual at-bats early in the season. Phegley has struggled in his major league stints so far with a .207 batting average over 241 at-bats, but showed significant pop in Triple-A in 2014 with 23 homers and a .861 OPS in 419 at-bats.

The White Sox traded Phegley to the A's on Tuesday along with Marcus Semien, Chris Bassitt and Rangel Ravelo in exchange for Jeff Samardzija and Michael Ynoa.

Phegley has shown improved on-base skills and increased pop at the Triple-A level over the past two seasons, smacking 15 and 23 homers in 2013 and 2014, respectively. His .274/.331/.530 batting line with Triple-A Charlotte last season was only good enough to earn him 10 starts with the big club, but Phegley could be in line for a significant increase in playing time in 2015 while perhaps serving as the backup to Derek Norris.
