Sun Aug 4 201901:28Sanchez helps Astros no-hit Mariners 9-0
HOUSTON (AP) — Aaron Sanchez looked like a reinvented pitcher in his Houston debut, throwing six stellar innings to start the Astros on a combined no-hitter Saturday night in their 9-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners.Sanchez was an All-Star in 2016 and led the American League in ERA, but he's struggled badly this season and had lost 13 straight decisions to lead the majors with 14 losses. Three days after he was acquired from Toronto at the trade deadline, the 27-year-old right-hander teamed with Will Harris, Joe Biagini and Chris Devenski to shut down Seattle. It was the second time in less than a month the last-place Mariners were no-hit by multiple pitchers. The Los Angeles Angels used two pitchers in a combined no-hitter July 12 against Seattle on a night when they honored late left-hander Tyler Skaggs by all wearing his No. 45 in their first home game since his death.Sanchez (4-14) struck out six, walked two and hit a batter in his first victory since April 27 for Toronto.Seattle's... PHOENIX (AP) — Colorado's Trevor Story has ended the Arizona Diamondbacks' no-hit bid by legging out an infield single to open the seventh inning.Alex Young held the Rockies hitless over the first six innings, facing one batter over the minimum in his second big-league start. Despite throwing just 71 pitches, he was replaced by Yoshihisa Hirano to start the seventh inning.Story hit Hirano's first pitch down the third base line and beat Jake Lamb's throw to first, drawing boos from the Arizona fans.Young held the San Francisco Giants to a run on three hits and struck out five in a 5-4 on June 27 for his first win. He spent most of the season at Triple-A Reno before being called up last month.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Wed Jun 26 201914:57Diamondbacks reinstate Lamb from IL, in lineup vs Dodgers
PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks reinstated one-time All-Star infielder Jake Lamb from the 10-day injured list in time for the game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.Lamb played in just five games before going on the injured list with a strained left quadriceps on April 3. The 2017 All-Star is in Wednesday's lineup at first base, batting fifth.Lamb had been on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Reno. He previously played third base for the Diamondbacks, but was moved to first in the offseason. Christian Walker took over at first in Lamb's absence this season.Arizona optioned infielder Domingo Leyba Tuesday night to Reno to make room for Lamb on the active roster.
Fri Apr 5 201917:53Diamondbacks INF Lamb to miss 6 weeks with quad injury
PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Jake Lamb is expected to be sidelined for about six weeks after straining his left quadriceps while running out a double this week.Lamb pulled up short at second base in the ninth inning of a 4-1 loss at San Diego on Wednesday. An MRI the next day revealed the extent of the injury."I'll start at six weeks and go from there," Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Friday. "It could be more. It could be less. Obviously a big blow. Another big blow for us."Starting right fielder Steven Souza Jr. suffered a season-ending left knee injury near the end of spring training on March 25. Lamb and Souza were expected to hit in the middle of the order for a team that traded Paul Goldschmidt and lost A.J. Pollock to free agency in the offseason.Lamb played only 56 games last season after an injured left shoulder required season-ending surgery in August."Obviously, I'm bummed," Lamb said. "It's really frustrating. I was just getting my feet wet and getting back to feeling like a part of the team."Lamb was 4 for 15 with two RBIs while starting three games at third base and one at first base. He'd moved across the diamond this year with Eduardo Escobar at third.Christian Walker, who has three homers and six RBIs, is expected to receive the bulk of the time at first this season with Wilmer Flores also an option, Lovullo said.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Tue Mar 26 201906:17Orioles' Cobb to miss opener, goes on injured list
With opening day just around the corner, the list of notable players who are going to be absent keeps growing.World Series MVP Steve Pearce will start the season on the injured list for the Boston Red Sox, and Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Steven Souza Jr. went down with a knee injury Monday night when he slipped on home plate.Earlier in the day, Baltimore put scheduled opening-day starter Alex Cobb on the 10-day injured list with a strained right groin.Pearce exited an exhibition game last weekend due to discomfort in his left calf. The right-handed batter normally platoons with lefty-hitting Mitch Moreland at first base, but the Red Sox will begin defense of their championship Thursday in Seattle without Pearce."We have to do it that way," manager Alex Cora said. "It makes sense for us, it makes sense for him. He should be back sooner rather than later but he won't be ready for Seattle, so why take a chance?"Sam Travis will likely make the team and take Pearce's spot on the opening-day... [More]
Wed Mar 6 201903:05Royals' Perez out for season, Yanks' Severino to miss opener
Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez is headed for Tommy John surgery and out for the season. New York Yankees ace Luis Severino is shut down, too — at least through opening day.Hours after Severino stopped warming up in the bullpen because of an inflamed right shoulder, the Royals announced more damaging news Tuesday: Perez will have surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right elbow, keeping the six-time All-Star off the field for the entire year.Perez hurt the elbow during a workout last week and said over the weekend that he was harboring a slim hope he might be able to play through it. Instead, he is expected to undergo surgery Wednesday."There was nothing that can prepare us for this. There was no information we had that led us this direction," Royals general manager Dayton Moore said. "Salvy was having no issues. He's asymptomatic. He has wear and tear, just like any 28-year-old catcher who's been squatting and catching since he was 12 years old. There was no warning sign... [More]
Tue Mar 5 201913:36D-backs' Lamb learning first with assist from Goldschmidt
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Jake Lamb does have his own first baseman's glove. It just has Paul Goldschmidt's name on it.Lamb is taking over at first base for the Arizona Diamondbacks, replacing Goldschmidt, who was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in December. He's still waiting for a new glove with his name stitched on it but he's taking advantage of one that Goldschmidt gave him."It's not a bad glove, believe it or not," Lamb said. "I've got no ego. I don't care if someone else's name is on it."Goldschmidt also gave Lamb a few pointers on how to handle the switch from third base to first."He gave me plenty of advice and it's a matter of me taking what he said and carrying it over into the game," Lamb said.Lamb has started 449 games over five major league seasons and only two at first. Getting comfortable there may take some time."I'm a little bit of a perfectionist," Lamb said this week. "The game's still moving pretty quick over there. It's just a matter of getting live game reps rather... [More]
