Tue Jul 7 202018:48Pirates' Keller looks to mesh information, instincts in 2020
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Mitch Keller's first go-round in the majors was a study in contrasts and a snapshot of where baseball is at in 2020.The traditional numbers for the Pittsburgh Pirates top-ranked pitching prospect weren't great. One win in 11 starts. An ERA north of 7.00. An inability to work deep into games. For a franchise that needs young players to do a fair share of the heavy lifting in order to contend, the early returns were jarring. The advanced metrics, however, were far kinder to the big-armed 23-year-old. His spin rate, pitch efficiency and his strikeouts per nine innings (12.2) offered proof his stuff was good. That didn't make it any easier for the soft-spoken kid from Iowa to endure. There would be times he would get to the dugout wondering how things got sideways so quickly.“When you make pitches and a ground ball gets through the hole there or a double down the line or something like that, I mean, you kind of feel it out there,” Keller said. “Like, ‘Dang, that was a really... Fri Feb 21 202010:03Nervy return: Year after injury, Pirates' Burdi throwing gas
BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) — The rib is stashed away somewhere in his parents’ house in suburban Chicago, a reminder of what Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Nick Burdi needed to lose to find himself. The images are ingrained in the 27-year-old's mind forever, every pitcher's nightmare come to agonizing life. The hard-throwing right-hander, his big league career finally gaining some traction following a series of fits and starts, slung an 97 mph fastball to Arizona's Jarrod Dyson in the top of the eighth at PNC Park last April 23 that Dyson took for a ball.By the time catcher Pirates catcher Elias Díaz stood up to throw the ball back, Burdi was crumpled in a heap on the mound, his pitching arm aflame. Both dugouts fell silent as Burdi clutched his biceps in agony. Burdi had undergone Tommy John surgery in 2017. He knew what it felt like when his elbow went haywire. This was not that, which made it all the more harrowing.“I had the shooting pain, the throbbing pain in the bicep and elbow area but I... [More]

Mon Sep 30 201912:04Stormy 2019 forces Pirates to head into new direction
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Jameson Taillon didn't throw a pitch after May 1. Felipe Vázquez headed to his second All-Star Game in July. By September, he was in jail . Clint Hurdle, who spearheaded a renaissance earlier in the decade, went into the last day of a lost season talking enthusiastically about the future. Two hours later, he was out of a job .Maybe it was a fitting way for the Pittsburgh Pirates to end a 69-93 campaign, one final bout of turbulence in a year when the sailing was rarely smooth. While general manager Neal Huntington talked about the need for a "new voice" heading into 2020, the club the new manager will inherit believes the worst is over."If we can get through all the stuff that's happened this year, all the losses, all the troubles, all the crazy stuff that happened, this is what we call the storm," pitcher Steven Brault said. "So if we can weather the storm and still be as together as we are, I think we're all looking forward to next year."Hard to blame them. Trevor Williams... [More]
