Mon Aug 31 202020:38Padres get Clevinger, Marlins acquire Marte at deadline
CHICAGO (AP) — San Diego acted boldly once again. Miami actually strengthened its roster. Mike Clevinger, Starling Marte, Archie Bradley and Todd Frazier were on the move. Lance Lynn and Dylan Bundy stayed put.Baseball's pandemic-delayed trade deadline was quite a day.The contending Padres got Clevinger in a multiplayer trade with Cleveland, bolstering their rotation Monday in a rare deadline deal between contenders. The surprising Marlins reeled in the dynamic Marte for their outfield. There was a lot of talk about pitchers Lynn and Bundy, but Lynn stayed in Texas and the Angels held onto Bundy. The trade deadline is normally July 31, but it was pushed back when the start of the season was delayed because of the coronavirus. With the shortened season and financial uncertainty brought on by the pandemic, there was talk that it might be an unusually quiet day. But there was plenty of activity instead, spurred in part by the expanded playoff format for this year.“It felt like a normal deadline... [More]
Mon Aug 31 202020:28Dodgers send starter Stripling to Toronto for 2 prospects
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers traded right-hander Ross Stripling to the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday for two players to be named, making their only move on a quiet deadline day for the major league leaders.Stripling went 3-1 with a 5.61 ERA in seven starts this season for Los Angeles, racking up 27 strikeouts. The 30-year-old veteran has spent his entire pro career with the Dodgers, cracking the major league roster in 2016 and earning an All-Star selection in 2018.The powerhouse Dodgers otherwise stayed pat atop the standings. While division rival San Diego and other teams frantically added big-league talent in preparation for this unique postseason, Dodgers President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman decided not to change something that's working so well for the seven-time defending NL West champions.“We feel really good about the team that we have, and also the depth that we have behind it,” Friedman said. “So our mindset was not to do something just to do something.... Sat Aug 29 202000:27Dietrich HR sparks Rangers in 6-2 win over ML-best Dodgers
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers were away from home for a later-than-usual Jackie Robinson Day. On the road for the first time in six years to mark Major League Baseball’s annual observation of Robinson breaking the sport's color barrier, the Dodgers tied the game right before Derek Dietrich's tiebreaking leadoff homer that started a four-run seventh inning. The struggling Texas Rangers then finished off a 6-2 victory Friday night over the team with the best record in the majors. “We’re a second-half team. I don’t know what to tell you," Rangers manager Chris Woodward said. “Overall it was a really good team effort right there, something that we needed.” Texas had lost 10 of its previous 11 games to wrap up the first half of its 60-game schedule. That included losing two of three games to AL-best Oakland before the Athletics decided not to play the scheduled series finale Thursday to show support for calls for racial justice. The Dodgers and San Francisco Giants didn't play... ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Derek Dietrich led off the Texas seventh inning with a tiebreaking home run and the Rangers beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-2 in a later-than-usual Jackie Robinson Day game on Friday night. It was the first time in six years the Dodgers were away from home for Major League Baseball’s annual observation of Robinson breaking sports color barrier. It is traditionally held April 15, the date in 1947 that he made his debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers, but had to be altered because the coronavirus pandemic pushed back the start of this season nearly four months. After Los Angeles tied the game with two runs in the top of the seventh, Dietrich's opposite-field shot to left off reliever Jake McGee (2-1) put Texas up 3-2. Shin-Soo Choo and Nick Solak added RBI hits, and Jose Trevino a sacrifice fly, in the four-run outburst as the Rangers won for only the second time in 12 games. The Dodgers (24-10), coming off a doubleheader sweep at San Francisco and without a series loss this... [More]
Mon Aug 24 202018:15Dodgers reach halfway point with baseball's best record
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Even amid the upheaval of a pandemic, one thing is predictable: the Los Angeles Dodgers are very good. In fact, they're the best team in baseball, boasting a 22-8 record at the halfway point of the shortened season. They went 13-4 playing a stretch of 17 consecutive days that ended Sunday, capped by an 11-3 win over Colorado in which the Dodgers blasted seven home runs.Instead of being on fumes, manager Dave Roberts said, “We all feel really good.”It shows in their balanced offense and pitching. The Dodgers lead the majors in home runs (59) and runs scored (171). They also have the lowest team ERA (2.65), while their WHIP (1.04) is just behind Cleveland's leading 1.03. The LA staff is doing it without David Price, who opted out of the season because of the coronavirus. They've stayed healthy, too, avoiding the COVID-19 cases that have wreaked havoc with others teams' schedules. The Dodgers begin the second half Tuesday against the Giants in San Francisco.“The last 30 games...
