Schafer aggravated his troublesome left shoulder earlier this month and still can't lift his arm over his head. "It's slowly gotten better, but it's not to the point to where I can really do anything yet," the center fielder said Thursday. "I've tried the last couple of days, but it still bothers me and I haven't even tried to swing yet.

It's a surprise in that Schafer was originally expected to require an extended absence, but it's looking increasingly likely that he could be cleared to return when first eligible. Schafer will push Justin Maxwell for semi-regular starts in centerfield when healthy.

"He went back and went to bed and came back to the ballpark at 2:30 [p.m. CT] and he tried to put on his shoe and do some running and couldn't. We're hoping all will be OK when we go on this trip."
